  1. Re:GEM wasn't patent law on Via Files Suit Against Apple · · Score: 2

they sure as fuck tried to patent pull down menus well before that

""In September 1985, Apple lawyers warned Bill Gates that Windows infringed on Apple copyrights and patents, and that his corporation had stolen Apple's trade secrets. Windows had similar drop-down menus, tiled windows and mouse support as Apple's operating system. Gates decided to make an offer to license features of Apple's OS. Apple agreed and a contract was drawn up. A couple of years later though Bill Gates will have again copyrights infringement problems with Apple (Apple vs. Microsoft & Hewlett-Packard copyright suit), and then he decided to claim that Apple had taken ideas from the graphical user interface developed by Xerox for Alto and Star computers.""

even in the 80's people were fighting apples lawyers over patents that already existed ... Apple is the original computer patent troll and may they burn in hell for what they have unleashed (besides 30 years of fucking over their customers with substandard products glossed over in jizz)

well your point happened about a half decade ago, and quality still doesn't matter because computers have become disposable.

Honestly unless I try playing a game (or maybe editing hd video, I dont do that) I cant really tell an appreciable difference between my 2.25GhzAMD XP, my 2.5 Ghz X2 or my 2.8Ghz X4, and 2 of those computers I fished out of the dumpster at my apartment. The software was screwed up and I can imagine someone getting a estimate for 175 bucks in repair on a 200$ computer.

mid to late 80's is when it really started hitting the fan, especially with the asian clones and very many of them could not care less about IBM and laws ... course that came back and bit them in the arse pretty quick but the cat was out of the bag by then.

but heck even the tandy 1000 was released in 86 ... maybe a bit sooner and that was a legal clone

the market wont tolerate it, look at the 1980's everyone and their brother was making computers, often times using the same core parts but totally incompatible with each other. when the IBM clones started to hit market all those makers vanished. It was not because the IBM format was better, it was because everyone got even footing on a platform and their confidence in making an investment to hardware was reassured to not be worthless 6 weeks later.

We still see this today, ie ohh windows 8, oh desktop windows8 doesnt run the same shit as arm windows 8, well fuck that!

At the time I didn't probe too deep, the stupid GM cost more, had less safety features, less gas mileage, less horsepower, less options than the Toyota I ended up getting for my wife... it was just one more nuisance to remove that cost a pile of money for some flunky to unplug a molex connector. Not to mention the thing ran like a bench grinder with a pair of scissors jammed in it and creaked like some ripoff rubbermaid tub in a tumble dryer just by shifting my weight (I like to lean on the door panel a little since Im a lefty and thats just the way I lean while sitting comfortably).

ya know its not freaking rocket surgery to desalinize water, give those people some toughs, clear plastic and some tinfoil and teach them how to use it. One great fictional character once supposedly said "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and feed him for a lifetime" (yes in English...) which is not that bad of a bit of advice IMO

Now I know that wont help every single person in need, but that would drastically cut down that number, for the rest maybe they can learn how to use a bucket to hold rain water and be educated that fire kills most nastys living in it.
