Just because you can doesn't mean you should. 30 years ago, applications were built with long life-spans in mind, so dropping into very low-level code could make financial sense. Today, programs are generally designed for adaptability and compatibility. The target is constantly moving for the vast majority of applications out there. Dropping into assembly rarely makes sense anymore, because the mantra is "good enough" rather than "best" because even the "best" won't stay that way for long.

Of course, different industries will have different mileage. If you do most of your work for embedded devices or industry-niche things like robotics or satellites, then by all means dive into the 1's and 0's.

Assuming you are talking to me, I did consider it. The lawyers I spoke with, however, said the courts generally won't side the plaintiff on this stuff unless identity theft or mistake identity is involved. He did say the fact that I wasn't contacted for 3 years should theoretically swing things into my favor, however the collections agency would simply claim they tried and it would be a he-said-she-said scenario where, again, the courts rarely side with the plaintiff.

All in all, I just decided to wait for it to drop from my credit. Amazingly, I've never had the collections agency call me, so I'm not having to deal with phones calls or anything, and at this point it is set to expire next year. It's still very annoying with just how stacked against the people this system is. Oh, and I filed a 3 page complaint with the FTC after TransUnion basically did nothing, complete with supporting documentation and everything (which I had at the time), but I never did hear anything of it.

I think you are overestimating the extend that google influenced this guys' arrest. They found child porn on his gmail account, and forwarded the info (not the email, just the fact that something was found) to the police, who then received a warrant to officially search his email, probably due in large part to both the claim that google found stuff and that the guy was a registered sex offender.

Google basically provided an anonymous tip; that's it. I had to do something similar a few years ago, although it wasn't automated. While doing a routine virus removal for a (former) client, I found a few pictures that were pretty obviously child porn. I called the police to let them know, they quickly received a warrant to pick the computer up and that was it. I wasn't looking for shit, or snooping around, or trying to start trouble. But I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal for me NOT to report something like that.

It's really not that much of a stretch to think they combine the two if it furthers a well-documented company goal/policy...

This is hardly a new company stance or anything, but it looks to me like the program started up last year and is only now starting to "come online" for email scanning. Maybe we'll see more cases like this. Or maybe they've been sending tips to police for years, and the police have simply been able to nab the guy without having to request access to his email first. Anyway, I think it's weird that people are all freaked out something that's been in place for a year, officially, and has been a company focus for at least 8.

  15. Lack of ability to challenge bad debt on 35% of American Adults Have Debt 'In Collections' · · Score: 4, Insightful

I ran into this a few years ago. Basically, I got a random call saying I owed about $1k. After asking for the debt verification letter to be sent, I was able to figure out that the debt in question was for some daycare provider in 2009, 3 years before receiving my first collections call. Problem was, we had moved out of that area when this supposed debt occurred, meaning it shouldn't have been charged in the first place. The daycare provider couldn't produce any documentation to support their claim, saying that it happened 3 years ago and they can't find anything. I then called the debt collection agency back and asked for the debt to be discharged as a result, but they said the daycare center claims the debt is valid and won't reverse it. I then opened a ticket with TransUnion (where the collections was listed) and explained the situation. 30 days later I got a letter saying the looked into the debt and determined that it is valid, despite having no documentation to back the debt up, and my documentation showing I wasn't even living in that area. Best part is, I followed up with TansUnion to find out how they validated the debt, and was told they called the daycare center and simply asked them if it was valid; no proof or documentation or anything provided. The whole system is a racket, and there's basically no way to get collections reversed unless the debt involves identity theft. The original creditor has no interest in the truth because they already sold the debt. The collection agency has no interest in the truth because they have already bought the debt. The credit industry has no interest in the truth because it's their core business. The only reason this whole thing hasn't bothered me too much is because since I basically went 4 years before realizing the debt existed, I can just wait for it to fall off my report.

And then to send out a very possibly misleading Tweet about it, knowing (hoping probably) that SWA will catch it just sounds like he was fishing for a freebie or a ticket comp. Sounds more like he means he wants one OS that people can write programs for and have it properly scale to the device, within reason. I don't think he's talking about the GUI. One bit of information that supports this is how he's combining the various windows teams into one, so that you don't have one group making the desktop OS, and another making the phone OS, and a third making the XBox OS. One team builds and maintains it, so that each device type shares the same core functionality. There will probably be GUI similarities, and I'm sure many of them will suck. But hopefully we'll avoid situations like the Windows 8 keyboard/touchscreen dichotomy in the future, since the design workload won't be as segmented.
