You may want to re-evaluate your history of the late 1900's and early 20th century in regards to the existence of cartels and over bearing monopolies. It was during this time period when worker rights were non-existent and monopolies were not restricted in how they conducted their business enterprises. And stop blaming the US and let Sweden take responsibility for their own actions for a change. That is of course unless you have any proof to back up your statement.
The majority of Windows OS stability problems in the past was caused by 3rd party hardware drivers not the OS itself. Just one of the drawbacks in supporting an open hardware ecosystem. Apple went the other route and locked down the hardware in an attempt to avoid similar problems.
The state of Iran has not declared war because they fund, arm, and support 3rd party proxies to project their power around the world. The controversy over Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon is not really about whether the state of Iran would actually use them. I don't believe any nuclear capable state would use their nuclear arsenal except as a last resort of defense. The risk is Iran providing a nuclear weapon to one of it's 3rd party proxies. If a 3rd party non-state actor was to obtain and actually use a nuclear weapon who would the victim retaliate against? Eventually the nuclear weapon could be traced to it's origin but would anyone support a retaliatory nuclear strike 6 months after the fact? This type of scenario negates the MAD philosophy.
Evolution arguments are irrelevant. The fact is we are here so we might as well move on. Plus there is not a definitive study that accurately gauges the percentage of those who do not beleive in evolution. The percentages range from 10% to 50% depending on the source. And the religious people who allow their religion to dictate their opinions and actions are in the minority in every poll regardless of who took the poll. Also name one recent {30+ years) governmental decision that is based on religious doctrine. Blatant religious interference into government decision making means the religious organizations risk having their tax free exemption status.
No I am just living in the real world where people such as yourself do not have a clue about the massive amount of work it takes to move applications to entirely different platforms. And exactly who are you paying for other peoples bad decisions? All the major software companies use different approaches to get their applications into the market place. Apple locks down their entire ecosystem. MS built their user base because they catered to the developers who create applications. The more people developing on their platform translates into more companies using the MS platform. One of MS's greatest products was the introduction of VB. VB was not a technological wonder by any means but at the time it created an environment where anyone with half a brain could build an application. This resulted in growing the user base. Prior to this developers needed to use C/C++ to build PC based applications which is much more complicated. I have been developing for over 26 years and my primary criteria for selecting a particular technology is determining if the technology meets my particular requirements. Selecting technology based upon which company provided the technology is idiotic.
And pray tell what SW would all the countries use to run their businesses. Evidently you have not seen the chaos caused by companies trying to migrate just one application from a MS platform to another. There are millions of custom Windows business applications that would need to be re-engineered and the expense would be prohibitive to say the least. And No, running apps under Wine or any other virtual environment is not an acceptable solution because all it does is add another layer of code between the application and the system running it. Mass changeovers would still need to re-test all of your applications to make sure they work properly. Advocating wholesale changes in application environments just because you hate MS is extremely stupid. shortsighted, and evidence of a lack of experience when it comes to providing IT services in the business world. And you are living in a geek dreamworld if you believe you can just take source code, compile it, deploy it, and expect it to actually work. The majority of Open Source applications are just poor imitations of proprietary coded applications. And don't forget that there would need to be mass re-training of the IT staff so they are capable of supporting an entirely new environment. What MS could do and should do is close it's foreign offices that are currently providing a large number of jobs throughout the EU. Maybe that will force them to build their own shit instead of using lawsuits to create their revenue stream.
Church attendance in the US is declining. The number of people attending church, synagogues, and Mosques represent a minority of the population. Keep in mind attendance figures include Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jews, and all the other various faiths people practice freely in the US. People heap scorn on politicians running for office who are described as ultra religious but if you look at the actual policies these politicians end up supporting when elected you will not see them arguing their policies are ordained by GOD. One of the most glaring examples of weak religious influence is the Abortion ruling in 1972 that has not been over turned even after the foaming at the mouth religious zealots have been fixated on it for 40 years. An older example was the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920's. The religious extremists were the driving force behind this insane ruling and was ultimately repealed by those with a little more common sense. Politicians running for office pander to the religious minorities for votes not because they intend on making decisions based on religion once they are elected. And by the way I am not a religious person and believe man made organized religion and the practices they encompass are nothing more than a social control mechanism used to manipulate the average citizen.
"The EU is behind more positive changes in IT" Name one mainstream application platform, development environment, or key technology that isn't built upon technology originally developed in the US or blatantly stolen by countries like China. IBM, MS, Apple, Xerox, Dell, HP, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Oracle, Red Hat, and CISCO are just a few examples of the global IT contributions developed in the US. And while the Internet has grown due to contributions from both inside the US and outside the US the fact is the Internet began life as a DARPA project. There is a good reason the Internet root servers are under US management and will remain so. Nationalism be damned the fact is the world at large contributes very little to advancing IT technology. Why should they invest the time and money when you can just use what others develop. This mirrors why the EU would rather rely on US military technology and protection. That's not to say their are no foreign contributors but the majority of non-US professionals live and work in the US because that is were the opportunities are. Even Torvalds had to immigrate to the US to advance his Linux development because even though Linux might be considered open source he actually got corporate sponsorship and a salary while doing continuing his work. Do you think Google would have succeeded if it was developed in Russia? About the only country contributing any thing worthwhile in IT technology is Isreal.
And your privacy issue is 100% BS. England has a CCTV on every corner. And while people everywhere bemoan privacy issues you should remember the US government could have tracked you down way before the Internet was every built. Drivers licenses, Mortgages, Personal property deeds, bank accounts, tax rolls, birth certificates, and even wire tapping have been available for quite a while. It might have taking more time to put the information together but the end result is the same. And wile I can't speak for Europe or any other country the US has strict rules of evidence in place for judicial procedures and I have seen no evidence any US citizen has been convicted of a crime based upon warrant less data collection. Evidence collected illegally is regular in admissible in court proceedings. The only way to get around this is for the prosecutor to argue inevitable discovery. Also give me an example of the EU sticking up for it's citizens. No government or system is perfect by any means but the EU has really never shown that they have a spine to deal with any important problems facing the world today. They prefer to castigate the US for not providing a solution and when the US tries they get accused of meddling. And finally I really wish the EU would develop their own IT technology because I am tired of traveling to the European continent to help make sure their technology and associated applications actually work.
Thank You. I'll be sure to remember this sentiment the next time your population starts anther culling period. Maybe you will be less a problem when the population gets whittled down to 10 million or so, especially when you end up having to rebuild your stagnant society with US money and US military protection.
I just wish the EU would actually start contributing anything that even comes close to being innovative in the IT world instead of using lawsuits and bureaucratic non-sense to generate their revenue stream needed to support the unelected gas bags currently running the EU bureaucracy. They actually make the US Congress look good which is no small feat. I know everyone on this site hates to say anything positive about MS but I really wish MS would tell the EU to fuck off and then close every single office and facility and let the former workers find other jobs while the US stops issuing Visas to people from that regional block without overwhelming proof that they actually have something positive to contribute.
So do you want to setup a Pay Pal account to fund the next move on the scale of LOR or any other movies being produced today? When musicians create new music do you expect them to pay for the instruments, studio time, sound production assets, and support staff? People continue to vilify the "evil" corporations and some of their arguments are valid but the "evil" corporations also provide millions of jobs that normal folk need to live.
When you start personalizing your animosity towards large organizations you tend to wrap your head tinfoil, put cotton in your ears, and then start humming to yourself. You most certainly do not consider the harm to the ordinary workers when you try to ruin a company or corporation to satisfy a Utopian commune based society.
I agree that most corporate executives are stingy overpaid bastards and often times idiotic but that is no reason to disparage the entire company. Financial services, stock exchanges, and other ponzi schemes should definitely put under intense security and reformed . I agree +90% of the SW copyright patents today are 100% horseshit but don't confuse that with copyrights. Copyrights allow the creators a way to re-coup their production costs and hopefully assure they make a decent wage.
Money is the absolute driving factor when it comes to developing and advancing new technologies. Drug companies are one of the best examples. It can cost billions to research, test, distribute, and bring new drugs to market and without the ability to make good those costs the industry would collapse. Another example, should a competent Computer Scientist get paid the same as the janitor or a McDonalds cashier? People entering the job market need marketable and relative skill sets that meet today's labor needs. If you go to college and major in something like Art History, English, or for god's sakes Political science don't bitch when you graduate and can't secure a good paying job. If you want to run through the street bemoaning the 1% versus 99% I suggest the problem has more to do with unrealistic expectations, laziness, and the entitlement mentality that is growing in some segments of society. Bottom line is if you remove the monetary incentives you remove the impetus that drives people to invest thier time and money on obtaining a quality education such as a BS IT, MS EE, or any other education that has relevance in today's job market.
Well aren't you just a fountain of generosity. Most software architects and developers depend on charging money to make a fucking living. This can include salaries, ad revenue, or any other source of revenue. But that doesn't necessarily mean that charging money to get rich *gasp* it means charging money to pay your mortgage, rent, and other living expenses. Of course this doesn't apply if you are still living with your parents. If you or anyone else wants to sit in the basement and give the fruits of your labor away for free more power to you. Nobody is stopping you. Don't want to see Ad's there are plenty of ways to prevent them from ruining your user experience while surfing the web.
Part of the problem with Linux on the desktop is that the proponents always list several different flavors of it when touting it's potential or usefulness. (Red Hat, Mandriva, ubunto, kubuntu, etc....). Each with it's own little quirks that have a nasty tendency to fragment any applications targeted at them. If all you want to do is browse the Internet Linux is OK but trying to target any client side development at a Linux desktop is a pain in the ass unless you can control (ie. lockdown) the system eco-system.
"Frankly, I'm surprised we haven't had this happen already"
It hasn't happened yet because believe it or not it is not that easy to do. The U.S. power grid is segmented into three zones with safeguards that prevent an outage in one zone from tripping a blackout in another zone and this makes causing a nation wide blackout extremely unlikely.
Seeing that the facts for the article's report was diligently gathered from all those Pakistanis that just happened to standing a bit to close the target makes the report sound pretty weak. We might as well go back to carpet bombing since the results would hardly be worse than they are now. As it stands the vast majority of the US public doesn't give 2 shits about anyone in the middle east and prefer to spend their time dealing with their own problems. On the other hand if you want to talk to some folks who really hate Pakistan and anything associated with Pakistan go ask an Indian for his views on that wonderful country.
Keeping yourself busy seeking the scientific proof for a Unified Theory of everything sounds a little more interesting than standing around waiting for a GOD to show up and just give up all the answers. Religions today are a conglomeration of man made rituals and practices that the originators claimed came from a GOD of one type or another but the proof is severly lacking. The leaders of the so called theocracy based governments are no more religious or holy than your average run of the mill sinner or blasphemous infidel. Religion is just a powerful means of social control for those seeking to remain in power and punish their adversaries in their pursuit of the title of Grand Poo-bah or whatever. As someone posted above it is a pretty poor GOD who would need to call upon human "holy warriors" to advance his ideals.
High Schooler? I have been in the development world for 25+ years and beleive the choice of technology should always be based on it's ability to address the actual requirements. Plus how in the hell would he be in a position to pass judgment of the Win7 design or any other OS for that matter. Like most wannabes they equate OS development to app development and there is vast difference in those 2 distinct areas.
Your are so full of BS, If you can't install and configure Win7 in under 15 minutes you should probably step back and let someone more knowledgeable do it for you. And if by some remote chance you are a little knowledgeable you should already be aware the UI can be bypassed to configure a machine running a MS OS product.
No I want an OS that actually is capable of running applications other then the half assed open source copycats. I also want an OS that does not require wholesale re-training of the development staff and the costs associated that comes up with it. Linux and the applications that run on that OS are little more than poor refactored apps. And WINE is just another layer required for running professional applications that require developers to waste even more time and effort into creating their program architectures. If you are not capable of working with Window's API's find you should find another profession. After 25+ years of professional experience working around any so called API issues is a non-issue only incompetent developers and script kiddies can't handle it.
Ok create a "crappy" OS but the problem is that its no better than any other mainstream OS and lacks quality user applications and migration strategies to help the average user actually male the change. Linux is worthless without quality user applications. In the business world you will need to come up with a way for them to use their existing custom built applications, re-train system their IT staff. As it is the super geeks can make do and users who do nothing but surf the Internet make up the majority of adopters. I have worked with multiple companies where the geeks talked management into switching to Linux only to discover their existing applications ended up not working without a lot of money and time. A few less flavors of Linux would also be a bonus. The main purpose of any OS is to run actual applications.
And why are you still determined to to take the script kiddies statement as pure truth? Most likely you have made up your mind who the real villains are and refuse to examine the veracity of of facts that don't support your world view. This type of mindless thinking only reveals your lack of intelligence.
Anon has presented no evidence of how or where they got the data and refuse to give any more information on the subject. They listed an agents name but how did they know to target this individual? The exploit they claimed they used (the Java Atomic Array flaw) is not exploitable on every machine that has Java installed and requires a specific configuration and usage patterns before the flaw could be exploited. And the FBI would be wary of issuing a blanket denial because they could not be sure there was not more incriminating proof waiting to be released. Since a particular agent was mentioned they could have discovered rather easily if the agents machine had the data and was vulnerable to the exploit. It's not like they would had to investigate their entire network infrastructure looking for evidence of the hack. But of course they are pure as the driven snow when it comes to issuing their accomplishments. Maybe they are pissed that the FBI (ie. the MAN) has caught and prosecuted a couple members of their little hacker collective and want to retaliate.
There are more tax shelters capable of reducing someones tax liabilities that are just as good or even better than using philanthropic donations. And if you are hung up on rich people or corporations avoiding taxes you should save your ire for the tax code instead of those who use it legally. Also keep in mind that the US corporate tax rate is the second highest in the world after Japan. Countries like China use this to offer lower tax rates to entice foreign corporations to do business with them. Just as they manipulate their currency to optimize their export prices while other countries let their currencies float. And China is certainly not alone there are many countries who use lower corporate tax rates in an effort to attract companies to their countries.
