I've always been sceptic about this kind of applications.
But when i saw this thing i started to see potential. The display sucks (green?), but the look and feel of the overall product is great.
It opens like a book and it has the lay-out of a book. That's a MUCH better idea then the PDA style eBooks you see today. You can sit down with this thing and hold it with both hands like a book. And it's big enough to read from a reasonable distance.
If they would replace the display with an eInk-like display (looks like real paper), i could be convinced to use it. Especially if the fonts would be anti-aliased and if i could surf, read email with it.
This thing combined with e-ink would rock!
* Books are readable in bright light with very little eye-strain. LCDs aren't. eInk is readable in bright light. + backlighting is probably possible for under-the-covers-reading
* You don't have to worry about the batteries dying when you are at a particularly engrossing section. According to the eInk site a display can run upto two years on two AA batteries
* Books are cheap: dropping a book into the bathtub is annoying, but its not going to put you out a few hundred dollars. These books could be made so that if you close them they are water and shock resistant.
This site is like a community. Everybody can add a piece to the museum, write reviews,... There are polls, links et. It's just a great site and it's al lot more updated and lively than the (olso great!) obsolutecomputermuseum.
Its their own fault for being so remote and being too far underdeveloped.
Of course we all know that it's OUR fault. We used to use these people as slaves, etc. We divided the continent to our wishes creating unnatural countries and causing neverending conflicts. Then we kept these conflicts going by selling them our guns and we exploited the situation to steal their natural resources.
And we never paid for it.
Even now we still don't pay fair prices for minerals used for making silicon chips

The project is far from finished and i don't know if it will work on this setup. But you can ask around on the mailinglist.
We have a working box in our living room that does some of the things you want (no audio recording yet)
I'm a big fan of the comic this is based on:
http://www.hermannhuppen.com/intro_english.php3
It's a really really good comic, I really hope the series will be equally good. But i Doubt it.
The adaptation of another comic-series i love, Largo winch, was TERRIBLE
With a couple of friends we are trying to make a linux based home entertainment system. Eventually we want te be able to:
- play mp3's and serve them on our lan. (works)
- have a nifty audio database with webinterface (almost works)
- serve a webcam (works)
- play dvd's (works)
- rip dvd's (kinda works)
- play divx-cd's (works)
- watch tv (works) and decode pay-tv:-) (almost works)
- record from tv (works, but no automated TV-guide)
- serve recorded DVD's and TV-shows on lan (works)
- burn recorded stuff onto cd's
- play games (works)
- create a nice interface so we can control it with a normal and simpel remote.
We can still use some help. If you're interested go to our site, read the faq and download what we already have.
I saw something on TV the other night about this new securitycam system.
It combined the input of multiple camera's into one image. It was a little bit like those 360 pictures but even bigger. So you had a real-time virtual world on the computer build up by security cams. It was pretty nifty. You could walk through it and all.
The interessting part fot you is that out of several camera-source's, one "file" was created. So you would only have to backup that one file.
Laws against monopolies are great, but if nobody bothers to enforce them, they are USELESS.
Would somebody please explain this to governments around the world? One day the companies will be TOO BIG to enforce anything upon! If one company owns, say 75% of the media, they can make AND break poloticians because this company OWNS the public opnion (sad but true).
The best thing: when I reach into my pocket or bag for a passport or something, they don't freak out and point their guns at me!
Of course in Europe people don't get to carry guns around. Even if you're a bad motherfucker, it's hard to get a gun.
As a result the police doesn't have to be as scared of you as they are in America.
I'm all against rude and violent cops, but sometimes it's understandable, because they're just scared (and with reason).
So do something about all those guns in America and your cops will get better attitudes.
Also in general, less people will get shot.

I used to visit the obsoletecomputermuseum and it's a great site.
But recently i discovered http://www.old-computers.com and now i'm addicted.

It's mostly our fault that Africa is such a mess!
- We colonized them; (killing A LOT of people in the process)
- We forced katholicicm upon them
- We made them work as slaves in plantations and in mines
- We stole their natural resources (we never AND STILL DON'T pay(ed) fair prices.)
- We drew borders and created artificial countries
- Because of these unnatural countries confilcts and wars started
- We got scared of our own mess and ran away
- THEN we sold them guns so they could keep fighting (and it was good business)
And after all this you're saying It's their own fault???? Shame on you!The west should take some responsability fot their historic actions and help Africa to get out of this mess!

Any kid would probably love to go and visit CompanionBot. So if CompanionBot stay's close to granny she'll still be able to see here relatives.

I agree that few people would pay for a banner-less slashdot sice the banners are not very irritating.
But what if Slashdot would increase the banner-load on the non-paying version?
I sure HATE those vertical or big square flash- banners you see on other news-sites...
yes we have looked at this. The project, like may other similar projects is linked on our site.
http://www.media-box.org is pretty interesting project. If you are using windows.
At this point it's more stable, usable then our project.
we're trying to do this
although far from finished you can download what we already have at:

Everybody should learn this rule by hearth.
A bit expensive perhaps, but if i would have a lot of money, I would mount one on the wall in every room in my house.
I would be able to listen to music from my entertainment server, watch who's at the door control the lights in that room, and so much more!
It would be geek-heaven!
These look great to mount on the wall and control things like lights, music and security cams throughout the house.
A bit expensive if you want to install one in every room. But it would be cool! I mean, these things have a TOUCH screen and wireless LAN!
would be great to integrate in our home entertainment project.

find c-mos battery
remove it
Are there any other countries (apart from the USA) where you can get this service?
So when can i buy one of these from Thinkgeek?
Read the faq (the slashdot faq)

At least WE get to fuck.
What do you mean by "a professional?" Some sort of hooker? :-) Or the guys over at buttse.cx?
Unless you like two-headed fish of course...
