How long before the MPAA creates their own spider to sniff out hidden textual versions of DeCSS? I like the code hidden in a HTML comment. I have put the code into a META KEYWORD tag, but it seems to truncate. Is there a character limit for meta tags?
"fine for spitting on the sidewalk in public? Sure. It *IS* the primary way TB is spread. And is unsanitary."
I sure wish they would enact that ordinance here in Detroit. The owners of the building I work in have to periodically pressure wash the sidewalk in front to blast away the accumulated phlegm, urine and vomit. An old guy the other day let loose with a lung oyster and almost hit me with it.
Detroit is by far the NASTIEST city I have ever been in.... maybe caning some of these consumptives would be a good thing....
I tried playing on my PII/500, 256MB, Matrox Millenium G200AGP box, and it was getting frame rates of like 1 FPS. Once I installed the newest drivers direct from Matrox, I was getting great frame rates - it's actually playable now. FYI.
I have had Concentric/Covad SDSL 192Kbps since last December and have been extremely pleased with it. I have had a total of about 6 hours of downtime the entire 10 months, and those times when it was down, I didn't even have to tell a technician - when I called their support line, a recording immediately played telling all customers in the Detroit area that they were experiencing problems, and that techs were working on it. Very professional.
Prior to that, I had Flashcom/Northpoint, and it was 6 months of a never ending bad dream. Service drops several times a day, multi-day outages, outrageous billing errors. I finally packed up the router and shipped it all back with instructions to cancel my 1 year contract and not to challenge my request to AMEX to reverse my charges. They didn't, luckily.
Telco installation both times (Ameritech) was problematic, especially with Covad. Ameritech saw that there was a line already active, so they considered their job done. Problem was, it was the old Northpoint line. They left the new Covad line unpunched at the telco box several blocks from my house. The tech toned the line and found the pair from my house dangling and unlabeled. Simple fix, and after that, no probs.
Once you enter product information at DC's site for items not in their database, you get this message.

Damn! I entered the UPC for a box of Acco staples and told them that it was for a fluorescent blue double ended dildo. Oh well...
says Mathews. "Our revenue model is being the gate keeper between codes and their destinations online."
Tough shit - we're supposed to keep your revenue model in mind? Heh.
How about a HD that contains either a pyrotechnic substance (thermite) or an inductive heating coil that would melt the platters. It could be set off either by a deliberate action or as a deadman switch. They come to seize your hardware, only to find the drive a glowing, molten puddle.
I know, I know, he was (allegedly) distributing copyrighted material. I know, it's illegal. But a lot of the posts regarding Napster/DeCSS lately have been castigating people about posting their thoughts on how to stick it to the MPAA/RIAA.
It's not about getting free MP3's or being able to view DVDs on your Linux box. I don't give a shit about being able to do those things. What I do care about is a mega-corporate entity telling me what I can or cannot do, and what kind of software I can or cannot possess. I'm damn near 40, and all my life I have despised those who attempt to control others. I work with (and for) these pricks in suits, and I understand that they are not a force for good in this world. I just give them a wide berth when I can, but love seeing you guys stickin it to them. I have 2800 MP3s up on a Napster share most of the time, just on GP.
Hey - watch it now. I work a block from the tunnel - Detroit may suck but I just work in it. The rest of the state is great. I came back after 15 years in LA. But I don't know where you got your "no sales tax" info, it's 6 percent here.
Back when we used to compose type on those old Varityper 5810s and 6400s (1983-91), we had to occasionally clean the keyboards because a new one was around 6-700 bucks. (A 20 meg "Winchester" drive was about $3000). I ran a 12 person type shop, and used to find the nastiest sh*t in them - ear wax, food particles, boogers, dandruff, and other assorted bodily ejecta. It's fscking amazing the amount of debris the human body jettisons.
You can find some good articles on the ascension of American Imperialism.
It's a combination of that Imperialism, and the American Corporate chutzpah that makes them think that they're the most important thing on the planet. I for one am anxiously awaiting the day when China declares itself a Superpower. Cut American brashness down to size....
I made an attempt at providing anonymous hosting for people but it never took off. After seeing the MPAA demand in the letter that they are sending out to not destroy logs of the site, I will have to emphasize that now. I told all my (few) clients that the log files are destroyed with an 18-pass PGP wipe nightly.
Tell me I have to keep records of clients whose identity I don't even know? BULLSHIT.
Fuck You Jack Valente - see if you can force me to keep records. Or will you send your jackboots to seize my property? Bring it on....
I know this topic has come up before, but what are the chances of a labor union coming together representing all of us in IT? Either start a new one, or become a subset of one such as the Communications Workers of America. I haven't been too stoked about unions in the past, but Damn, I can see why they were started now.
I've worked in IT for 12-13 years now, and one thing has not changed, the total helplessness of the end users of our products and services. Imagine though, if they (the corps) start sh*t with us, leaving them high and dry through strikes. They are at our mercy in the long run, why not make sure that they know it.
First of all, I'm pissed that the UN has any say whatsoever over me as a US citizen. Secondly, has anybody looked into the possibility of a "freenet DNS" system with new TLDs? Something distributed and anonymous and redundant?
I own several "generic term" domains, and had one email exchange with a troll who insisted that he owned the rights to a particular generic word. I not so politely told him to fork off.
With the WIPO, it looks now like someone like him has a real means to cause me trouble now...?
Some of the posts advocate a coders union - that would be a great idea if we were riled up enough to form one.
Of course, there is the "Atlas Shrugged" response too, which I like - if it were possible. If society as a whole does not appreciate what coders do, and try to restrict something they don't have the slightest understanding of, then coders should walk away from that society and let them sink. Find a country who would appreciate them (and keep the fscking lawyers out!)
It's a site I run out of my basement for jollies. Let's see how long before some corporate lawyer sniffs me out. Feel free to post... and no, I am not a corporate mole. And logs will be destroyed daily, starting tonight when I get home.
I have a site I threw together a couple of weeks ago... www.corporatenetabuse.com just for this purpose. It is a threaded message board. Have at it if you like.

Is it just me, or is that music kind of perky?
I use it to wipe my browser cache and history folders..... just because I can.
Now I can relive my high school days.... with a Sinclair. Oh how I wanted one, after my infatuation with the TRS-80 faded....
How about constructing a schematic diagram based on R/E'ing the PC board and it's components, then putting that up on the mirrors as well?
How 'bout embracing both - I registered goregasm.com
Damn, I was all excited too... my 2nd PPro 200 processor for my Compaq 5500 came in just before lunch.

It works: I put a Mac Extended keyboard in there, let it dry a couple of days. It worked fine after that.

I believe the preferred term now is "Web Sites of Concern"
Oh, I don't know.com The first thing to pop into my head.com Of course, I could have used a .se tld
