I don't have much of a problem downloading movies, but if there was a legitimate alternative, I'd take it. But having to compete with a free service should hopefully make them eventually provide an alterative that isn't too pricey or restrictive.
Netflix is such an alternative. They have many memberships from which to choose, as cheap as $10/month for "unlimited" DVD rentals. You don't even have to leave your house to fetch or return your DVDs. If you don't consider that to be a legitimate, price-competive alternative to downloading free movies, then what would be a fair alternative?
Instead of a cell phone hand crank, how about a cell phone that recharges by shaking it, like those "Forever Flashlights" that you shake a magnet through a metal coil? No extra accessories and the recharging mechanism is hidden!
How can you have both socialism and anarchism? Wikipedia says libertarian socialism: is summed up in the name: management of the common good (socialism) in a manner that attempts to maximize the liberty of individuals and minimizes concentration of power or authority (libertarianism). It attempts to achieve this through the decentralization of political and economic power, usually involving the collectivization of most large-scale property and enterprise. Libertarian socialism denies the legitimacy of most forms of economically significant private property, since when private property becomes capital, it leads to the exploitation of others with less economic means and thus infringes on the exploited class's individual freedoms.
How can you have "management of the common good", "collectivization of most large-scale property and enterprise", and "deny the legitimacy of most forms of economically significant private property" without authoritarianism?
If they weren't already continuing from the Windows Server 2003 + SP1 code, what WERE they using as their base? What and how much code did they "throw away"?
What if we just make all elections "non-partisan"? That is, candidates have no party affiliation. Every candidate must be evaluated soley on his or her merits.
Owise.com looks very cool! I had a similar idea, which I called MemeTrade.com. (get it? rhymes with E*TRADE:) I wanted to create a "fantasy stock market" community similar to BlogShares, where people could busy and sell "memes", i.e. word frequencies from the many news and blog sites that my memetrade web crawler would crawl every 15 minutes. For example, the meme "RITA" might have a rising value today as more news and blog stories are written about hurricane Rita, while other words would be losing value as fewer news and blog stories are written. Using individual words as the "atomic unit" of memes, more complicated "meme funds" would be created that bought/bundled multiple related words (such as HURRICANE, KATRINA, and RITA).
I put my MemeTrade hobby project on hold when I later found Yahoo Buzz. Maybe I will revisit the idea thanks to inspiration from Owise!:)
Jobs works for $1/year at Apple and gets some bonuses from Apple board of directors sometimes.
When people say Steve Jobs believes iTMS should only charge $1/song, they are misinterpreting Jobs. He actually meant iTMS should actually charge the customer's annual salary/song!
And if you don't trust the All-Seeing Google, you can tunnel your own VPN through Google's VPN! Borrow their dumb pipe, but keeping their prying eyes out.:D
PalmSource is the software company porting PalmOS to Linux. Palm (aka palmOne) is the hardware company rumored to be switching from PalmOS to Windows CE. They are not the same company.
but if no one owns Martian propety, how can anyone grant the right to own it via some Martian X-Prize? This will be an interesting legal question in about 100 years!
I'm waiting for [bio]diesel-electric hybrid cars. I don't know why car companies are waiting so long. The US is unfriendly towards any diesel (regardless of how "clean" it may be), so that may be a legal speedbump..
Renters do not get free utilities. Landlords roll their utility costs into the rent. If landlords' utilities costs decrease, then those savings would trickle down to lower rents.
The price of housing in San Fransisco is so high, that being homeless and NOT leaving is stupid. If I were homeless in San Fransisco, the first thing I would do after begging enough money for a bus ticket would be to get the hell out of San Fransisco.
Actually, homeless people migrate *to* San Francisco from across California. San Francisco gives away free $100 cash stipends to homeless people on the first of every month (also known as "Emergency room flooded with OD'd crackheads" Day).
Competative markets only exist, and work, when the underlying infrastructure is publicly owned. If we had privately owned highways, no little startup would even be able to drive to work, much less ship a product (or even receive parts to build their product) using their competitor's highway system.
good point. The Internet's growth has been disappointing. When the gub'mint assumes control of the private internet infrastructure, then we'll see some amazing advances in network technology and capacity. And don't forget the increased freedom from surveillance we will receive!
Since the XBox is a loss leader, one could argue the Microsoft is not *selling* XBox hardware. They are giving it away to increase XBox software sales.

Who would buy one of these laptop used, when people are giving away new ones free??

Google News and Orkut were also "20% Projects." I wonder which Google services were NOT 20% Projects?
The birth rate in developed nations is already less than their replacement rate. Affluence = fewer babies.
I think a bigger risk than corporate laptops on hotel networks is corporate laptops on wide-open wifi networks at places like Starbucks.
Wasn't 1995 the "Year of the Linux Desktop"? And the year after that.. and the year after that..

That Windows 3.1 error about DR-DOS was ONLY in one beta release. It was NOT in the released version of Windows 3.1.
