My system was designed to be admin-less, but if you really wanted you could have a whitelist feature that let a cafe employee whitelist a regular customer.

If he's concerned with freeloaders, have the cash register print out a code on the receipt that you can enter into a nocat captive portal to authenticate against a RADIUS server. Give them an hour for each purchase, for instance. Tie the code to single MAC address, etc. But consider the cost of integrating your cash register, running the server, dealing with the tech support, etc. vs. the cost of sticking a WRT54G on a wire and letting a few freeloaders on the 'net.

You don't need to prevent ALL freeloaders, just discourage most of them. To avoid expensive system integration with the cash register and admin costs, you could just run an open WAP. When someone connects, record their MAC and give them one hour of free access. After one hour, block them for say 5-60 minutes.

Do you think she wanted to be a telemarketer when she grew up? I don't like telemarketing calls, but I pity telemarketers. That could be because I once had a summer job as a telemarketer. Given my experience as a telemarketer, you should NOT piss them off. They called you; they have the power. Telemarketers have three lists of phone numbers:

    1. the "do not call" list
    2. the "call in six months" list
    3. the "call next week" list

If they reach a human who says "no thank you", the phone number goes on the "call in six months" list. If they call someone and get an answering machine or a busy signal, they put that phone number on the "call next week" list. If they reach a rude human, their phone number goes on the "call next week" list. The telemarketer just increased the rate at which you will be annoyed by telemarketing calls!

I would assume that to be true, but it is not always the case. For instance, in Portland, OR there is Jesuit high school. It is considered a powerhouse in athletics and strong in academics. Ironically, though it is a private school, the average salary for teachers is lower than it is for the local school district.

good point. I've read about that, too. However, does the EXISTANCE of the government schools lower the private school teachers' pay? Consider this: teachers are willing to accept lower pay to NOT teach at a public school! For a tech comparison, video game programmers get paid a lot less than Oracle DBAs because no one really wants to be an Oracle DBA. :)

Teachers are paid poorly because they are government employees. If all schools were privitized, wouldn't schools pay for performance? Reputable schools would want to hire GOOD teachers. What incentive do government schools have to hire good teachers?

And what is an appropriate "living wage"? CNN reports that the average salary for US teachers in 2002-2003 was $46,752. That seems pretty decent, especially given that most school years are only 9 months long.
