On Mac OS special folders could be named anything and be anywhere (futeure-proofing and localisation-safe). Applications just tell the OS that something needs to go into whichever special folder it needs to go in. So it's not impossible to create an elegant solution, just not possible for Microsoft to do it.

Windows can do this, too. Applications are supposed to use the SHGetSpecialFolderpath() API to get the localization-friendly, drive-letter-independent path to special folders like "My Documents". Of course, many apps don't bother. Plus Microsoft can't implement this correctly, so you can only call SHGetSpecialFolderpath() if IE4 or greater is installed, BUT if you are running on Windows 2000, SHGetSpecialFolderpath() is superceded by the the SHGetFolderPath() API.

I found that hard to believe, but I just double-checked and you are correct. PHP (PHP/FI) was conceived in 1994 and the first public version was available in 1995. Microsoft first shipped ASP with IIS 3.0 in December 1996. However, I belive that Microsoft did not create ASP, but instead acquired a small startup. So that startup could have used the ASP technology earlier..??

I completely agree. PalmSource needs PalmOne. No other company makes successful Palm OS devices. PalmOne does absolutely need PalmSource (given the rumors about a Windows CE Treo), but PalmOne+PalmSource makes a lot more sense. There are also rumors that RIM may acquire PalmSource, but I don't think RIM can gain anything from PalmSource. RIM's hardware and software is closed, proprietary, and based on Java. Why would they want PalmSource's Palm OS (without PalmOne's hardware)? I mused more about this in my blog: " Will PalmOne acquire PalmSource?"
