There was one Knight Rider episode that featured Michael's evin twin. The evil twin drove an evil robot semi. What was the evil twin's name? I think it was something like Garth. What was the name of the evil truck?
I've recently been researching new cars with disel engines, such as the Volkswagen TDI engines. I've read they get 40-50 MPG, plus have lower emissions than standard gas engines. 25% of Europeans drive disel cars, but only 2% of Americans do.
Are diesel engines actually viable in America? I'm afraid to buy one because so few gas stations sell diesel gas. This is a classic chicken/egg problem Does anyone have any experiences with diesel engines? Which brands of US gas station sell diesel? At every station?
Candidate A is single and has no problem working 60 hour weeks, while B has a wife and 3 kids and wants to work only 40 hours. How can you expect the company to ignore the fact that A is going to give them more for their money?
The prospective employer cannot whether know Candidate B is married or has kids because these are illegal, discriminitory interview questions. Therefore the employer has no (legal) way to make this "value for their money" comparison.
... = more income for the gub'mint. I assume H1B workers have to pay income tax, but do they have to pay social security? They also have to pay sales tax.
I see a lot of people in this thread talking about "getting meaningful work", but when they specify, they are talking about swapping *careers* into fields which are basically human services. I have trouble seeing any geek enjoying such work.
true. They don't call it "work" for nothing. For example, if you were a professional musician, music might cease being fun.
I have a pet theory that as communications technology advances at an increasingly feverish pace, that while our communication *connections* and channels of data will go up, their *meaning* will go down in proportion.
so true! Just because technology gives us more WAYS to communicate doesn't mean we have anything (more) to say. More communication with less to say.
I'm voting for Ralph Nader, even though he won't "win" the election. However, your vote will win an important smaller victory! If Ralph Nader receives >= 5% of the popular vote, the Green Party will qualify for federal campaign money for the 2004 election. The Reform Party received $12 million in federal campaign money this year because Ross Perot won enough popular votes in the previous elections. Even if the Green Party isn't perfect, having a louder alternative voice (especially in the televised debates!) is crucial for breaking our "Republicrat" deadlock.
Did you even read the MSDN article to which you linked? If this bug was fixed in Windows 95, why would they offer a downloadable patch for Windows 98??

This allows politicians' rich crony friends to use obscure taxcode loopholes. The gub'mint doesn't want a simple algorithm because people might actually understand it.
I worked as a telemarketer one summer during college. Here are my insider tips:
1. If a telemarketer calls you and you are not home, your phone number is placed on a "call back real soon" list.
2. Do NOT swear at the telemarketer because they will often add you to the "call back real soon" list to further annoy you!
3. Politely ask to be added to their "do not call" list. This is surprisingly effective. It also will cut your current call short. The telemarketer knows you will never be a prospective customer, so they will want to get off the phone with you ASAP. They want to move to better prospective customers.
I know a admin for Expedia.com. He claims they their NT web servers are rebooted more than once per day. I also heard a talk from Steve Ballmer where he said that Microsoft.com was run on ~70 NT web servers by ~70 admins! He jokingly said that each admin must spend their entire day sitting in front of "their" web server and repeatedly ask themselves, "Did the server crash?! Did the server crash?!" If Microsoft can't keep NT up and running on their own Microsoft.com and Expedia.com web sites, how do they expect anyone else to do so?
I also know a web developer from go2net.com. They're a Linux shop, but acquired SiliconInvestor.com who used NT. They routinely had to reboot their inherited NT web servers every morning.
The US gub'mint doesn't care if you use drugs, they just care if you sell drugs. See, they want to sell you your drugs! The CIA doesn't like competition from your local drug dealers.
but what if people who do more drugs have more sex? Drug users are "freer" people. They problem have more babies, too. Thus their share of the gene pool could be expanding.
Apple is not telling your HOW to think (as in "think differently"). They are telling you WHAT to think (as in "Apple is different. When you think of Apple, think [of something] different").
Given the high cost of living in CA/Silicon Valley, $75K is a joke to anyone with skill; I wouldn't consider a job there for less than $125K without some *major* perks.
I don't live in California, so I don't know what the market rates are. $125k seems like a lot. What kind of experience and skills would a programmer need to make that much in the Bay Area?
Do you know where I can find info about market rates for programmers for different regions in the US?
thanks..

I can't wait for Intel to add their new CPU feature to support P2P! It's called NetBurst.

Get a lawyer on staff, you guys
The original poster meant that Slashdot should retain a lawyer for misc law questions. duh.

I thought Pinstripe was RedHat's codename for 7.0?
Why are Linux SYN cookies not enabled by default? This seems like a useful feature, but it's somewhat hidden.

Does that even matter to employers these days?
