  1. Not really. on Quake 2 Source Code Released Under The GPL · · Score: 2

To sweepingly state that you are greater than your teacher in any class is nearly always a mistake. However, to state that all things must be learned in school is equally as much a fallacy. I don't write graphics engines, but my coding skills are far improved from when I began. To date, my only CS class has been AP Hypercard(oxymoron?) in highschool.

I've learned to program somewhat proficiently in C/C++/ASP/PHP3&4(a little) and Perl all without taking a single class. It isn't to say that classes don't have their place; only that they aren't required(but helpful).

  2. I'm greatful. on Quake 2 Source Code Released Under The GPL · · Score: 2

I really am. Why? Look at a lot of older companies like Sierra who have games they'll never make another penny off of. Why not release it into public domain or GPL it? No motive. However, when you look at truly great people like John Carmack who've more than given back to his community, it makes me feel good inside. Like maybe, to him, it's not all about the money.

I wish more companies and programmers had such insight.

I can't blame them. It takes effort to continually support old versions. This affects the bottom line. Companies(especially public ones) are all about making money. On a side note... oddly I've been switched over to attbi yet they will still route traffic from my old @home IP address. Think that's odd enough? I've found that it will route packets from my computer with almost any IP address that @home owns. IP Spoofing time? I think so. :)

    2) My IP address that has been static since I signed up over a year ago has suddenly changed and it appears that static addressing in any form has gone up in smoke. This screws anyone relying on a static IP.

Wait a while. Things will settle down. My IP address has changed many times since saturday morning. If you need a static IP to run something against the AUP, maybe you need a new ISP anyways.
    3) They have been playing fast and loose with the service agreement (that I signed), but instituting an AUP (that I didn't sign)that directly contradicts it.
I haven't seen anything like this. Do you have any references?
    4) Their DNS service has been very erratic

It was. It's working now. I couldn't get any of the DHCP assigned DNS IP's to work. Now they do. I think they updated the DHCP well before actually turning on the DNS servers. Oh well. Get over it. If you want DSL; you can go ahead and do it. I however, as well as everyone else I know, has found the short service interupption more than acceptable.
This is not the sort of crap I want to be paying for and I am actively shopping for a replacement (I.E. DSL). I expect any other user who wants to do more than play with the latest microsoft browser will be doing the same and dumping AT&T as soon as possible
What the fsck are you talking about? You think maybe throwing in some mention of Microsoft will get you modded up or make you look cool? What do you need to do thats so goddamned important that you need a static IP? And what in the freak does a browser have to do with your ISP? That's not rhetorical.

So, yes they made some big changes. No, that's not fully exculpatory for the service interuptions. However, they've declared that it will be taken care of.

Come to think of it... there was a new AUP a while back that you had to opt-out of in writing. It's been in effect for quite a while. Maybe you should check your mail. :)

You hit the nail on the head with this one. What is a license? It is not ownership. It is merely a contract granting usage of a particular copyrighted work(the program) to a person.

    [IANAL](first year law student)
When a company uses a GPL'd program, they do not actually distribute the program internally. The usage of the program by the companies employees does not constitute the distribution of the program. The employee has no rights not explicitly granted by the company. Even if employees of the company develop the program, the company itself is still the copyright holder. An employee's distribution of a GPL'd company-owned program would constitute theft from the company.

This, of course only applies to company employees. If, perhaps the program was leant to someone not a part of the company, this would constitute 'Distribution'. A person outside of the company would be a seperate legal entity.

Of course, with all things, this is nothing more than my own personal interpretation of copyright law. If any real lawyers would tell me how far off I am, that'd be fantastic!

I've found Windows XP to be easy to use, but has some serious issues with a few games. These issues often require software developer issued patches to correct the issue. That's a lot of work for the casual non-technical home user. I simply don't recommend it. Why not stick with Win98? It is fairly stable, plays games like a champ, has much greater driver support, and is easily obtained.

Like the article stated, the average geek isn't going to like reactivating XP every time the change 6 components. There certainly could have been a better way to do it. It's just not the preferred OS in anybody's house.
