I had never seen the Firefly series and a friend told me about the Serenity screening (http://www.cantstopthesignal.com/). I went to it not expecting much and not knowing anything of the story. It turns out you don't need to know anything about the series to enjoy this movie. The screening was a great story it was already a well done movie. I enjoyed the movie so much I bought the series on DVD the next day.

When Serenity comes out do yourself a favor and watch this movie. I share many similar interests with other people here on Slashdot and I feel that many of the nerds here will like it.

  4. Re:moto myths on World's First Fuel-Cell Motorcycle · · Score: 1

You make a really good point. There are many idoits on the road today.

I have read the Hurt report, and taken a defensive motorcycle saftey class. I try to ride as safe as I can. I wear a helmet and armored riding gear. I like to think that that stuff will help, but I know that my helmet and all the armor in my jacket will not save me from a head on collision with a car turning in front of my motorcycle.

Automible vs. automobile accidents happen every day, many of those have serious injuries and some are fatal.

Injuries can occur in any kind of accident. The percentage of injury is higher on a motorcycle than a automobile because cars have more saftey features. There are more automobile accidents per year than motorcycle accidents (purely because there are more cars than motorcycles). So the probability of an accident is acutally higher if one drives a car. So statisticly you are less likely to get in an accident with a motorcycle but more likely to get seriously injured.

I have riden with an amputee who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. Riding with him made me question why he continues to rides, and if I should continue to ride and put myself in harms way.

You no longer ride and not because it can not be done, but because of the idoits on the road. I don't think anyone here would question your decision (and I am certainly not questioning it). You have an injury that many of us can not begin to imagine which gives you a unquie point of view.

I wonder what your advice is to those of us who still ride motorcycles? Are we taking an unreasonable risk of serious injury by riding motorcycles?

Francis Schaeffer once said "Art reflects culture". The fact that so many people buy and play violent video games (which is an amazing art form) tells more about who we are as a culture than will the history books. To blame the manufacturers isn't getting to the root of the problem.

I think you make a good point. We are a violent society of war making peoples. Violent video games are so popular because our society is violent.

Maybe if we (humankind) stopped invading countries, blowing things up, shooting innocent civilians, and fighting amongst ourselves we would have the resources to put a stop to our violent art that is video games.

Until then it will be a vicious cycle of violent video games training the world leaders.

So, umm, logging on as an admin and just copying them from the machine too easy for you?

When we own the machines we make the adminstrator account our own.

Or hooking up the HD to another machine that you can log into and copying from there?

I think we were saving this until last resort. The bootable Knoppix STD CD was easier than taking the hard drive out and putting it in another system.

Or are all files set with single user access rights, where even your IT admins can't do anything directly?

We didn't have to involve Help desk which would have been a lot more red tape to clear than using this Knoppix CD.

Failing that - just change his password, login as him, and go about things.

Again the user was the administrator account on the machine. It is very possible my work environment is not like yours. It was not possible to get the password from the user at this time.

You can armchair quarter back the problem all you want. I am sure there are about 100 other things we could have done that we either did not think of or did not know.

I was simply trying to list an example where the Knoppix STD CD was valuable as a tool to get in a Windows machine that we didn't have a password. The security tools disribution (STD) is a lesser known Knoppix variant and I thought it could help answer the question of the thread. For someone who wants to test the security (or lack of security) on a Windows system, the STD is a easy non intrusive way to see if access can be granted.

We had a couple people leave work recently and they had some data in the computer that we needed to get ahold of. Since my company requires passwords and restrictive permissions on all Windows systems my team was worried that we might never get the docs off the systems.

A co-worker got out the Knoppix security tools distribution ( http://www.knoppix-std.org/ ) CD and was able to bypass the Windows passwords very easily. And it read the hard drive ignoring windows permissions.

If someone wanted a secure system. The Knoppix STD CD could be a good tool to use. Try and see if you or a trusted friend could get in to your PC.

What a great article. I think more of us nerds should infiltrate the spammers and see if there is any way to shut them down. I realize that is a lot more work, but how much work do you spend filtering, or deleting spam each day?

On a related topic, I used to get 25-30 emails per day to the email address that is on my whois registration. Recently I had to renew my domain name and I noticed that my registrar offered an email address encryption. By selecting this option my spam emails went from 25 per day to 2 or 3 per day! I was astounded at the scum who are using the whois information to spam people.

So if you own a domain name, check to see if your registrar is offering a similar service.

I work in the IT industry and I am concerned that my employer would consider outsourcing.

However, I can not help from wondering if this is somehow backlash for the dot com boom of the late 90's. I know companies were bending over backward trying to acquire engineers. Some rather strict companies made some major changes to compete by abolishing strict dress codes, allowing flexible hours, and stock options.

I realize companies make the decision to out source based on a number of factors and the business world is supposed to be professional and not vindictive. But I could also see a lot of managers that are not exactly happy their company made such concessions to hire talented engineers and are not overly concerned when there are talks of moving the engineering jobs off-shore.

That might not be the only reason to out source to another country, but I can also see them not fighting the change if it comes to the table.
