    500K is more subscribers than anything but WoW and Lineage have ever seen at peak.

    Wrong. Final Fantasy XI peaked at over 600,000 and probably still has more than 400,000. FFXI was the #3 subscription MMOG (behind Lineage and Lineage II) when WoW came out, having overtaken EQ over a year earlier.

    Three big problems. One: It has to be absolutely reliable and able to run for long periods with refuelling/recharging (and also keep running while it's being refuelled/recharged). It stops, and you only have a few minutes to restore blood circulation. Two: it has to handle the blood gently enough so that it doesn't start clotting; this is not a trivial problem and includes much hard research to formulate the surfacing of all the blood vessels and chambers. Three: It all has to be damn small. This combines with number one to make it *really* difficult.

    It is artificial - duh - but the price is also artificially cheaper then the bigger versions. You get what you pay for. It's like saying "Well his Nissan Maxima has leather seats and Bose stereo, mine doesn't - that's an artificial decision"...response "So is the price tag".

    No, it's not like that. Unless your Nissan Maxima had the leather seats and Bose stereo when it was manufactured, and they were torn out and thrown away so that Nissan could charge more for the Maximas that have them.

    No, genius. His point is that "flops" is singular, with the s standing for second rather than forming a plural. His point is that you say 2 petabyte hard drive and 500 teraflops machine because those are the singular forms.

    It's going to be considerably more difficult for the next generation to build their first radios, once it's all gone digital.

    People can build their own digital equipment. I hear some people even build their own computers.

    Of course, if the digital format is proprietary, that makes things take a different turn. But that's because the format is proprietary, not because it's digital.

    No. Some planets suitable for life have almost certainly existed in this galaxy for billions of years longer than the Earth. By now, one would expect there to have been civilisations that spread throughout the galaxy and therefore brought Earth within detection range of their signals...

    And just why would one expect that? You have *no* idea how likely a planet suitable for life is to actually spawn life. You have *no* idea how likely life on a planet is to become intelligent. You're trying to deduce probabilities from a single data point.
