  2. Needed: Cast-iron QA on An Idea For Software's Industrial Revolution · · Score: 4, Insightful

The industrial revolution came about because of the development of rigid specifications that covered what parts had to do. If a part met specs, it would work; this made them interchangeable and meant you could get them from anyone who so qualified.

In order for software to do the same, they require the same rigid specifications that can be tested for. Wake me when we have those, okay?

If fracking contaminated well water with oil, I'm sure they would. Unfortunately, the claim is that fracking contaminates well water with fracking compounds used by the driller, not the oil. This does them no good at all.

  4. Conclusion not supported by given evidence on Survey: More Women Are Going Into Programming · · Score: 4, Interesting

The fact that 48% of first programmers are women does nothing to show more women are getting into programming. It is entirely possible (and maybe probable) that it's been 48% for a long time, and what we're seeing is not more women getting into programming but that a lot of them are getting out again quickly.

True, but elements heavier than iron weren't created as part of an energy-producing fusion. They were created in the hearts of supernovas, where the pressure of the exploding star forced fusions that consumed energy.

  18. Re:the real question on How Close Are We, Really, To Nuclear Fusion? · · Score: 2

Nothing can fuse "practically any matter", at least and get energy output. As elements get heavier, you get less energy out of fusing them. The breakeven point (with the exception of a few exceptional isotopes a little further up) is iron. Past iron you have to put in energy to get fusion. Heavier elements produce energy when they split up, which is why nuclear fission is a thing and is done with very heavy elements.
