  1. Lame article on The Fine Art of 'Boss Science' · · Score: 0, Troll

What a waste of time reading this was!

Never once were the premises of the workplace questioned - why do you need a boss at all? If you have a system that makes it most likely that assholes will succeed, why not change the system? the article is just hand wringing, with a few bits of measly tripe appeals to "the human condition." Not once does this article even mention the word "union."

You've got to be kidding. How exactly is despising someone for virtue of being black, brown, gay or whatever now on the same level as despising someone's idea? It is not "prejudiced" to be opposed to christianity or islam, functionalism, capitalism, platonism, or what have you.

  7. I admit to have not RTFA, but on The Importance of OS Backwards Compatibility · · Score: 0

on the surface, this seems ridiculous.

Free Software - and also commercial UNIX to a great degree - has the highest standards of backwards compatibility - far more rigorous than anything Microsoft has come up with.

MS' idea of backwards compatibility is hampered by an ever changing filesystem layout where developers are encouraged to step on the OS as well as other apps. It does not work and never has. For MS, backwards compatibility is delusional lip service - but that is what IT managers like, after all.

It all goes back to essentially the UNIX focus on adherence to protocol standards, and the MS focus on profit - and a big part of that is breaking protocols to force obsolesence.

THC has little to no addictive qualities. It is perverse how something one could grow in ones backyard, for free, is of the highest criminality, yet somehow we feel a need to come up with something else - usually not as good - that requires an entire industrial infrastructure. While it is not hard to understand the reasons for this sad state of affairs, it is still ... sad.

While it is extrodinarily dishonest to write off a persecuted minority as "narcissistic" (as many do), it is also jeopardous for those who are persecuted to dwell on this. Clear thinking people will realize this about themselves.

This narcissism also throws a total lack of empathy with other minorities into very clear relief. Look at how feminists, gays, blacks, nerds & whatever else very rarely show any solidarity with each other at all - this is truly sad.

As a long time Debian user I am not so surprised by this - it is just the reality when you operate a system with thousands of user & shell accounts all over the world. It isn't that big of a deal if the debian admins respond correctly, which they always do, but it looks bad.

The issue that gets me is this is the second time the Debian system has been compromised, and in the exact same way - a local kernel exploit from a compromised DD account. As good as the Debian security team is, they are frankly terrible with the kernel. The Linux kernel has continual local security exploits (I am not in denial about that); these don't matter so much for most deployments but for the Debian system they are absolutely critical because of all the shell accounts. The Debian kernel team really needs to work out something better (though I know the issue is more complicated than that); this is the one thing Red Hat does very well. I cannot for the life of me understand why debian servers kernels are not upgraded continually. The downtime is immaterial compared to something like this.
