Its not hard at all. You go on Kazaa, and type in ".torrent", "bittorrent", etc and you will get some results. Of course alot of the crap that will also show up in the results are full-sized movies, etc. that have the key-word that you are searching for in the file description, but what isn't like that on Kazaa? I know this doesn't answer your question completely, but it does work to a limited degree.

So it's unlikely you're owned from this. Some general tips to check your box's health:
On linux, run `lsof -i` as root to see what kind of connections your box is listening for/has established.
On windows, run `netstat -an` to see much the same.
As always, monitor log files and bandwidth usage for suspicious activity or traffic spikes you didn't initiate."

Another thing to check out if you think your box might be compromised, is your hosts file. Make sure you dont have a dummy hosts file that was put in your system that might redirect you to a different SETI@home server. Also if you run your own DNS server (or access one that is run by a friend, etc.) make sure all the security updates/precautions are in place to not allow someone to either poison your DNS cache (essentially rerouting your seti client to wherever they want). Or even easier, just use your ISPs DNS. Of course its not impossible that the same could happen to the ISPs DNS server, but I'm sure its much less likely.

I use traffic shaping on my DSL to limit outgoing transfers (no not stuff owned by RIAA - live music) and aside from the pesky transfers that might use different ports, I am able to limit them directly from a machine. This is with a low end Cisco device (1605r Router). I would imagine some of these universities have Cisco equipment (or other stuff that has the same features). How about just limiting the total bandwidth a dorm (or IP address, or mac address, etc.) could use. I know alot of university networks are BIG, but I would imagine a university would limit the bandwidth student(s) can use anyways, its just hard to believe they will let their network get hammered by file sharing. Now I know not the same IP addresses, ports, etc. are always sharing but you know its going into a pool (DHCP possibly) and it would not be hard to atleast limit bandwidth on a specific subnet, etc. at certain times like the above poster mentioned.

PS not saying anything bad about PacketHound, just thinking existing equipment can do the job in some cases.

No man!! It all depends on passion involved. Just try to use that as an excuse when you are in the court room. Say passion caused you to hack!

I mean that lady in Texas ran her husband over *3* times while the man's daughter was in the car screaming into that crazy bitches ear, but it didnt stop her from backing up a few times to make sure he was dead. Although throughout the whole trial she seemed to be defending herself like she was not guilty. Hmm, now the case goes back to the jury, and even though she murdered someone, under Texas law if the murder was done under "passion", she might get PROBATION. So someone like Kevin Mitnick gets 3 years of buttraming prison while she might get PROBATION for running over her husband a few times.

First of all, for some reason I dont think a man would get probation for running over a woman 3 times. And secondly, I dont think a woman would get anywhere near 3 years for hacking at the level Mitnick did.

So that gives you an idea of how the sentences are generally made.

But regardless of that, they really do need to lower the sentencing for hacking crimes. Regardless of how much man-time or money they might cost to fix the holes, or track the hacker down, I dont think someone sitting at their computer should get more time in prison than someone who might do rape or assault.

Of course every case has their own situations, but in general they really need to lower the MAXIMUM amount of time a hacker can get.
