I built a new computer just to run Vista, dual core 3.7ghz cpu with 8 gigs of ram, x-fi sound card and sli 8600 video cards
Is this the kind of machine you need to run Vista decently ?
On that kind of hardware I could install Kubuntu then Asterisk and build a PBX for an office of at least 300 agents, put a TV card in and install MythTV so I can watch shows on MY schedule, configure Samba to act as the domain controller with roaming profiles for the agent's desktop machines (if they are running Windows), serve the agent's web-based CRM with Apache/PHP/MySQL, put in a second nic and configure it as a gateway/firewall/email-virus-scanner/etc and many other services that could be needed by the company that don't come to mind because I'm at my first coffee.
And if my only job is to administer that server, I would also install my favorite games on it because most of my time will be passed playing them since it will be stable.
Maybe it is not a logo, but the last laser printer I bought was a Samsung and one of the decisive factor was that, right there on the box, it said it worked under Linux.
Even better, the CD in the box contained the Linux drivers.
In the end, Samsung got my money because they decided to support Linux. And guess what brand I will be looking at first the next time I need a printer ?
I am a Canadian, and yes, I pay that levy on all blank CD I buy, even if like 99% of those CD are used for Linux ISO and backup. So when I want a new song, I just go download it and don`t feel guilty about it since I bought more than my share of license to do exactly that !
Only thing that I don't like is that artist probably never see the color of that money (specially since Canadian money is colorful)
Oh, and I'm a life-long peanut butter fan, and in all the years I spent in Quebec (and the rest of C Nextanada, where French translations are on everything), I never saw PB called anything but 'beurre d'arachides.'
I lived all my life in Montreal and almost everyone I know say "beurre de peanut", so what part of Montreal did you spend your 20 years ? the mostly-english-part ??
But I agree on pretty much the rest of your post
Linksys is an example of a company which apparently DOESN'T want its hardware to be purchased by DIY-ers.
Witness the Series 5 and Series 6 WRT54G routers; they stripped down the NVRAM to emasculate their equipment to the point that it's no longer desirable for general applications.
That is why they made the WRT54GL, you pay slightly more to have more NVRAM and it still runs Linux (the L in the model number is for Linux)
The change for the v.5 and 6 was to save money on the parts, not so that we couldn't hack it.
You cannot find ANYTHING on their website, and its dirt slow. I remmeber one time I wanted to download media player 11, went to the site, and had to spend literally three minutes finding the download page.
You own the box, you own the CD that came in the box, you own the papers in the box. You don't own the program, you are merely licensing it's use from MS under the terms they dictate.
Here in Quebec, you just can't make me sign an agreement AFTER I bought your product, you have to disclose it BEFORE I buy it and make me sign it. So, in essence, I'm not bound by this EULA, whatever Microsoft think. And if they want to remove me my rights to use the product I bought (not that I would buy anything from Microsoft), I have a government agency to defend me http://www.bbb-bec.com/main.cfm?p=280&l=en
There's always several issues that miss the release and with a project on the scale of Vista you really can't seriously expect it to come out perfect.
What missed the release in this case is Vista itself, it was supposed to be out what, 2 years ago ?
Since it came out that late, we could excpect that, at least, it was almost perfect.
If, in those 2 years, they were not perfecting it, what is the reason for that huge delay ?
specially since they removed so many planned features from it.
I personally like the sidebar, not that it's anything that I couldn't have downloaded seperately anyway, but I enjoy having the CPU usage meter right on the side, along with a calender, the weather and a currency converter. <snip> The operating system itself has not crashed on me, and it has run suprisingly smoothly. I've got everything I need for work installed without a problem. There is one thing that drives me absolutely mental though... in the windows explorer there is no "up" button...
Until that part, I thought you were describing my KDE desktop, but then you said you don't have the "up" button.
I'll stick to Konqueror, thanks
And then I learned how screwed up the company's financials were. The money was right, but the risk was too big. So I passed the job onto a friend of mine.
The way it is here in Canada is this : I have an album I bought. I can make a copy for myself, but I can't make a copy for someone else. But, you can borrow that album from me, and while you have it make yourself a copy. Since you pay the "media tax" on every blank media (CD, DVD, VHS, etc) it is legal as long as you copy it onto a blank media that you paid the tax for.
So, remember to make that copy to another CD before you rip it to you iPod.
For once it's the recording industry that got fucked, not the other way around.
On a side note, I buy couple hundred blank CD/DVD a year and I have to pay that f***in tax on every one of them, even if almost all of them are used to store data (backup, Linux ISO, etc). So on the rare occasion I actually make a copy of a music CD, I think I paid more than my part to have the right to copy it.
You've bought a license to use a product, not the product itself, apparently. The product is a disk. You can do whatever you like with that until you stick it in a computer, then the license kicks in.
Problem is, in some jurisdiction (like here in Quebec) you can't make me sign a contract after I bought the product, you have to disclose everything upfront, before I buy it. That's why I don't give a f**k what Microsoft's EULA is saying. Not that I will buy Vista since I upgraded long ago to something way better, Linux:)

Wait a couple days more for it to finish booting and then you'll see what the issues are
Don't forget http://centpbx.com/
CentOS based with FreePBX and other goodies
I dropped Trixbox when Fonality bought it and never looked back
You can download http://centpbx.org/
So the rumor is true then : Microsoft does copy Linux
You lost all credibility when you included Windows 2003 in that phrase.
Except if you're running Linux. Latest version of wine looks "fine" to me.

So, at least, it is partially backward-compatible !
Did you show them how Vista can turn your dual-core into a 386?
There, I corrected it for you
Try the easy way : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_Feisty
In my experience, it is easier than installing any version of Windows
Here in Canada, it is allowed by law to use "minor corrective force of a transitory and trifling nature" : http://www.cbc.ca/news/story/2004/01/30/spanking04 0130.html

You just have to know how to use the tool : http://www.google.com/search?q=download+media+pla
See ? first answer right there
I didn't know Linus could be installed on a computer, and that he needed drivers
You mean, you actually RTFA ?
You must be new here

Or just boot Knoppix and type "memtest" at the prompt
Knoppix : the first tool you need when you have to support PCs
<sarcasm>What a great friend you are !</sarcasm>
