Actually I've seen an undergrad project that tries to do exactly this. It's not perfect but it's a start. He did it by using about 80 bandpass filters, one for each note, and see which filter got activated when a certain note or chord is played. He managed to get around the problem of harmonic frequency (although not all the time) and tried it with multiple instruments. The system got about 80% of the notes and chords correct. Not bad for a one year project.

It's a thrill seeing him play a blues scale and the computer transcribed it correctly.

It's more than that. GH requires you to react to the screen, while generally you don't play guitar by looking at your drummer. This is more difficult for me just because my reaction is so slow visually.

The real instrument is more difficult than GH in a sense that you have to hit each note accurately, cleanly, and without too much force otherwise you'll tire yourself mid-song and it'll sound bad.

GH is actually quite fun to play, but since I really suck at it, it's good for a laugh. I prefer my Jem any day.

On a side note, my drummer tried to play the drum game and gave up halfway through. My little brother can beat him on any song any time on that machine.

Now that the intelligence say that Iraq actually bring more terrorist to the US, this report is dismissed as rubbish (again) by Bush.

Judging from the amount of Republican that gets rich with this war, I would naturally assume that they don't care about terrorism. At least with his snafu, Kerry did have a point, where he said that he HAD served in a war, and Bush and co purposely avoid going to Vietnam. Anybody that served in Vietnam would know that war is hell and wouldn't recommend it out of personal profit.

Not that the democrats are angels, but so far I've seen the republican destroy the US far more effectively than any terrorist can. Give them a couple more elections, and the US should be in the stone age.

I like Apple's product as much as the next geek, but their current mindset of arrogance is unacceptable. iPod is THE perfect mp3 player, but they refuse to acknowledge their quality problem as of late. They should have no excuse for shipping ipods with a virus. Their laptop overheating and shutting down is their problem. But they're maintaining the "we can do no wrong" attitude by refusing to acknowledge that there's a problem until customers start screaming in their ears.

I've been seriously considering to get a Mac for my parents due to its many plus points compared to PC, such as no virus, good design, nice interface, etc etc that I'm sure they'll love. But, the sudden surge of problems with their product combined with their unwillingness to accept that it's their fault that their QA is flawed has led me to believe that that $1,500 is better spent elsewhere.

Karma be damned. Apple, currently, sucks. Until they get this crap sorted out, I won't recommend them to anyone. You fanboys can spend your money on their faulty products all you want, but most sensible people won't. When all this shit is taken care of, I'll gladly recommend Apple again wholeheartedly.

  11. Re:Bluetooth 2? on Nokia's Wibree Takes on Bluetooth · · Score: 1

No. Bluetooth needs to die a quick death. They're not kidding when they named it "Bluetooth special interest group", which is all they did, serve their own special interest. The amount of money that you have to spend to license bluetooth is enormous. This is why you see a bluetooth mouse cost 3x a regular wireless mouse, it's due to the licensing cost.

Half of the people in here don't know bluetooth 2.0 has been out since 2004. Talk about confusion. If half of slashdot don't even know about it, forget about the public. Also I have to say that bluetooth as a standard is quite brain dead by itself. It's painfully slow to do anything, the concept of visibility is half-baked at best (most likely an afterthought), pairing is a stupid concept (password for connecting? WTF? it's SHORT RANGE so the device would likely be next to me), security is almost non-existant, too many profiles that needs to be hard-coded into the hardware, eats battery like no tomorrow, I can go on and on. I can pretty much tell that the standard was created by greedy companies that have no clue how people will use it.

Bluetooth is in really bad shape. It's expensive, hard to use, eats batteries and incompatible. Which is the exact opposite of what bluetooth supposed to be. This is due to their own greed, so let it die.

Nokia is not a charity organization. It'll do lock ins if it's possible. Considering the amount of backstabbing that happens in wireless standardization, I'm not surprised Nokia is hiding this until the last moment and caught everyone by surprise. If this "proprietary solution" intending to lock "dumb users" actually works better than bluetooth, me and a million other people will buy it.

I think bluetooth sucks. The best technology (like wlan) is there without me noticing it, but if it's not there, it's annoyingly obvious. OTOH, bluetooth is glaringly in the way, it sort of makes sure that I know I'm using bluetooth technology(tm). Add defective security (visible/hidden bullshit that everyone have to deal with), slow connection handshake, really slow discovery (at least in phones) and high power consumption, then bluetooth is ripe for a fall.

What's important to remember is that this is hardware technology. It's not that easy to update like software, people have to BUY new stuff if they want to update their bluetooth. I think even in its 2.0 incarnation, bluetooth is not good enough. If Nokia can get their wibree right the first time (fast discovery, fast handshake, no-hassle security and low power) then I say we'll see bluetooth disappearing within 5 years or so.

They are the middlemen, and in this day they are very, very afraid that with the internet without a DRM, the middlemen will get cut off. Think about it. You pay to the artist directly, there's no more need for an expensive studios now that home recording has reached a high enough level, internet radios are everywhere, and citywide Wi-Fi is becoming a reality. Dunn runs HP like her own private company, and I think she's quite desperate to plug the leaky HP board. What we do know of the leak is the one leak to the media. She was thinking about the unknown leak to the competitor and I can't blame her for that.

Perkins came across as a total dick to me. He was so used to being served that he simply quit HP when Dunn as chairwoman doesn't want to abide by his words. I would bet that at some point, he actually said to her that either she do what he wants or he will destroy her (and he is doing that precisely now). From the story of his yacht, to his grand reception by the Turkish court, and writing novels to boot, Perkins believed he is on top of the world and Dunn can't escape capital punishment from "the KING".

Granted, the method with which Dunn is handling this was not the best. But I think that all the strings are being pulled by Perkins, and most of us duly follow him. WAKE UP. Ignore this stupid bullshit.

Why do you think you've seen so many stories about this in the media? I would bet it's from Perkins' say-so. Corporate spying happens all the time, and yet when noone really knows if "pretexting" is a crime, this is big news and EVERYONE start to pass judgment. I know that the public are stupid, but this is goddamn ridiculous. This stupidity is the reason we can have people like Perkins at the top.

You know what, I totally despise having to use Fn key for anything. I can understand that in a small subnotebook where nothing else will fit there's no other choice, but in a freakin 15 inch laptop they should have space for many keys and do away with that Fn bullshit.

In fact, one of my friend just got a monstrous 17 inch Dell recently, and his keyboard have almost exact functionality as my 13 inch one. And he got that software volume control as well. I mean, how hard is it to put an extra potentiometer on the cabling that goes to the speaker with all that space inside that monster.

Oh well it seems that I'm taking the bait and start ranting, so might as well. Another thing is, why oh why can't I upgrade the video card on any laptop. I believe we're in the 21st century now. I know that some model from some brand have an interchangeable video card, but it's still a far cry from the standard desktop PCI-E/AGP/whatever cards. Some of us don't have the luxury of using a desktop computer all the time since we're constantly on the move, so that laptop should have the upgradeability of a desktop when I want to play some Doom 3.

Give me a laptop that's small enough with a reasonable power, with a hardware volume control, upgradeable video card, and pack it in a reasonable weight and I'll grab it in an instant. I can live with Fn keys when there's a space constraint.
