The most radical proposal is to eliminate the windowing system entirely. In this scenario, the studios would simultaneously release a title in theaters, video stores, and on pay-per-view, and the title would require only a single marketing campaign. The audience could then choose which format best fits its wallet and clock. Proponents of this plan envision that it will shift some part of the theater audience to either DVD (which has higher profit margins than theatrical distribution) or pay-per-view (which has higher profit margins than DVD). Even so, they hold that movie theaters will retain a core audience, since there will always be people who prefer the theater experience or who just want to get out of the house.
The hitch here is that the popcorn economies of the multiplexes are extremely fragile. "We are in the people-moving business," a multiplex owner explains, "We make our real money moving customers to the popcorn stand." Since movie theaters have fixed costs, such as leases and interest payments, a relatively small dip in the traffic to the popcorn counters could make it impossible for them to remain open. Just a 6 percent drop in attendance in 2000-2001, for example, put most of the theater chains into bankruptcy.

Not coke dealers, no, but a good many of them, perhaps even the vast majority, become anti-orginized religion and even; gasp!
Atheists.
You can count me as a son of a pastor who is now an atheist (as is my brother). I've also known a number of pastor's kids over the years and I'd say over 75% are now atheist.
I hear ya...I was at a showing years ago in a high school theatre and someone threw a toaster through the screen (a 4 slicer!!). Needless to say they stopped showing Rocky Horror.
Flash memory has a write endurance limit. This limit is the number of times the flash memory cell can be written until it can not be restored to its initial condition. The industry refers to this as the erase cycles. The endurance is rated between 10,000 and 100,000 erase cycles for different types flash memories.
A customer might use the service to impulsively schedule a sitcom for recording after the show is recommended by a friend at a party.
... for "less than" $5/month? USD? I dunno... I can't think of a TV show so great (that I haven't already heard of) that I'd need to pay a monthly fee to remotely record it before I got home. Maybe a small fee per use or something, for those times you are away for an extended period or something...
TFA says that TiVo allowed you to schedule via the web - did you have to pay per month for that?
Telecom Ottawa (owned by Ottawa Hydro) has hotspots in the downtown core and the Nepean Sportsplex in the West end. Pay-per-hour type service. I've used it on occasion as a backup for net access.
Go one further and get a decent set of headphones. The cheap ones really don't do the high/low ends justice. I picked up a ~$120CDN set of Bose after xmas and was amazed at the difference between these and my last $30 set.
...but no mod points today. I would bet that a decent percentage of any voting population does exactly what you described (like yer northern neighbours, eh?).
Thanks for the great reply - just to clear up I don't believe hemp is a cure-all (is anything ever?), I've just heard nothing but positive benefits when it comes to industrial hemp. You mentioned some points that I did not realize, and you sound like you know what you're talking about so I guess my view of the issue is now a bit fuzzy. As you mentioned, it's probably superiour in specific applications, or in the case of clothing, as a blend of fabrics, and inferior in other areas.
"Hemp fiber bundles are up to fifteen feet long, while cotton fibers are a mere three-quarters of an inch, which reportedly gives hemp eight times the tensile strength and four times the durability of cotton. Hemp has a natural luster and takes dyes beautifully, due to its superior absorbency."1
"Much of the groundwater tested in agricultural regions around the world has been contaminated by runoff from pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Already 15,000 lakes in the United States are so contaminated that nothing can live in them."1
"The pesticide king is cotton. Cotton is adapted to a wide range of uses, and it spins easily, but the environmental costs of cotton cultivation are incalculable. Cotton is grown on 3% of the earths best arable land and uses a whopping 26% of the worlds pesticides. It is a demanding crop that requires heavy irrigation and consumes more than 7% of the fertilizer used annually. It exhausts the soil, but is widely grown by developing countries desperate for a cash crop to pay international debts."1
"An acre of land will produce about 1000 pounds of primary hemp fiber, about 2 or 3 more times fiber than cotton. Fiber comes right off the plant ready to comb and use."4
"With few insect enemies and little competition from weeds, hemp is a much better candidate than cotton to produce a high quality, sustainable and organcially grown fiber.".
Also from the same page:
"Hemp fiber paper has many beneficial characteristics, including high tensile strength, opacity, tearing resistance, wet strength, and folding endurance. It can be recycled 7 times while maintaining a suitable substrate and surface for modern printing purposes, compared with 3 times for tree paper. Hemp has a low lignin content, so a non-Kraft, non-chlorine bleach mill is feasible."
Modern hemp products are far superior to those in the 30's in addition to numerous side benefits such as hemp-based biofuel.
True, but then they might be useful for after storms, when normal communications may be down for a significant period of time (a few examples of this recently...)
I can confirm that - but only works well with planters warts. Also it usually takes a couple of months...

Seems hazy if an author should be allowed to submit a story to /. about his own project.
I dunno... it's a handy item, the author is a Slashdot user AND has replied to posts about his project. I (for one) don't have a problem with it.
