I'm not sure about the Netherlands, but in Canada this is indeed true. My father (years ago) got a raise and it bumped him up to the next tax bracket, which meant overall he was getting less money at the end of the year. I think most employers usually take this into account when applying raises (and adjust accordingly) but it's not always the case.

Serge Corriveau, vice-president and national director of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association, said law enforcement agencies don't see movie piracy as a big problem.
Perhaps because they have better things to do with their time? Like catch criminals?

According to the 2006 watch list, "piracy in these countries is largely the result of a lack of political will to confront the problem."
Maybe 'cause most Canadians don't consider it to be a problem and would rather politicians focus on more important issues? The article then tries to tie Canada's 'lax border measures' for pirated products into the argument, as if getting movies out over the intarweb had anything to do with it, and claims that Canada needs to step up its efforts at major ports of entry. Yeah that'll stop those pirates.

While I agree that Waterloo is a great city (I was born in Kitchener), saying Ottawa is a 'fetid shithole that most people escape from when they turn 18' is a bit much. One could also say it's a clean city that most people return to after growing up and realizing that they don't want to raise their family in a massive concrete jungle.

Perhaps because like any capital of a nation the city is not 'full' of politicians. As an Ottawa resident I can attest to the fact that the federal political 'scene' is not some overpowering force you can't ignore if you drive down the 417. I would agree that Ottawa is not the best place to live if you are a teenager as it's not exactly a party town, but if you are over the age of 25 and enjoy quality of life over hip martini bars then it's a great city.

Not only that but big chain renters like Blockbuster and retailers like Walmart will base their purchases on opening weekend success - doesn't do well the first weekend? Chances are good you'll never see it at Walmart and only after time at Blockbuster. Tie that in with the fact that Walmart (the largest single retailer of DVDs and CDs in the USA) only stocks the top movie titles (ie: no catalogue (old stuff) sales for studios or record/publishing companies), and you can see why profits are down and why they need to take these measures to tow the line.
