  1. Link with IMAC ExaScience lab? on Scaling To a Million Cores and Beyond · · Score: 2, Interesting

Is it coincidence that earlier this month there was a press release from IMEC regarding the issues of massively scaling up computational power ("exascaling")?

When I was finishing up my PhD (on InfraRed LED's) about 5 years ago, HP was making high-efficiency Red LED's with 50% light output efficiency. At the same time commercially available blue (GaN) LED's were only 10% efficient. Green LED's were somewhere inbetween.

I should really google for the state-of-the art visible LED efficiency, but am hoping for someone to post a more informative post following this one.

I've been playing around with Mediaportal over the past few months, and must say they have made giant leaps forward.

There are a few caveats on the hardware side:
You're best of with a full DX9 card, and you'll get best TV results with a Hardware MPEG2 encoder card. Software cards are useable for viewing, but timeshifting is a no-no without hardware MPEG2.

You might want to try this one again.

I confess. This dates back to the days when I did not have a company car, and I still used to walk from the train station to work.
Sometimes I just could not put down the book I had been reading in the train. I would then continue reading as I walked to work.
I did walk slower when reading, to accomodate for the multi-tasking. A nice side-effect is that you can read more then :-)

One can argue about taste... but comparing a Yamaha to a Steinway? Obviously the Steinway should sound better. (I've played on both instruments)

It does bring about an important point: any "remote piano" will have a different sound (not mention accoustics) associated with it.

The "toucher" which sounds just right on one instrument can sound harsh on another. Wonder how one could compensate for that?

For my PhD, I have worked on the development of LEDs for telecom purposes. They use a specific design that gives them more output power and better coupling into fibre.
In this project we've obtained error-free transmission at 620Mbs over POF. We've also fabricated devices that could handle switching speeds of over 1Ghz.

This fight is indeed not about copying. Perfect bit-wise DVD copies are being made by the millions in Asia. This fight is about distribution control and price fixing. Maybe you guys remember regional coding. Maybe Americans may forget about it, but in Europe, where people have to wait 6 months longer for a new release to come out, we don't. As said before, the encryption key on the disc has to match the key in the player. This is a very easy way to control what players can play what discs. And like this they can keep disc prices in Europe higher than in the US.
