    I'd like to add that there are legitimate reasons for doing this:

    • This appeals to your adventurous side
    • You honestly want to help these countries
    • ...other personal reasons

    Dude, civilian contractors get hazardous duty pay for going places like that. They go straight up to the front lines just like a soldier would in many cases. It is, to be blunt, dangerous work, and you should expect to be spied on and be prepared to be shot at.

    More directly to the original story. There are easier ways to make a lot of money than that. You life, for the entirety of your stay in the middle east, is likely to suck. Get 2 jobs and you'll be happier, and get to survive.

    If you like Windows that much... Why not just run Windows.

    I thought that we programmer types were supposed to be Libertarians, not communists. If you really like Windows better, then just use Windows. Pick software based on your preference of the software. We're a capitalist society. I get paid to write the software that I write, which runs, for the most part, on Solaris.

    Why not chocolate, or some other flavor? ...it's about the same question unless you really have a reason. I use Linux because, as a student, I needed a lot of the things that it gave me, and now, I just find it more convenient. What keeps me off of Windows is the fact that I use Linux, and that I'd have to buy a license for my computer. ...since I'm going to graduate school in the fall, I'll be skipping that license.

    The part of the parent poster's project that I find interesting is the use of A* to find destinations around campus. I wrote a program that did something similar in college, but it did so in a virtual environment (it was, however, a simulated robot).

    Yeah, just to chime in Sun states on their website the compiler requirements for Java, up ontil around 1.3 it was K&R (or some other non-ANSI dialect) C, but then they switched to ANSI.

    The JCP is run by Sun Microsystems. That is hardly a standards organization, that's free labor for a company. I love Sun's product line, but Sun is not a standards organization. Incidentally, neither is GNU.

    Somebody should take a collection. This guy got screwed and, even though he is taking down the effort, and will not pursue further development. Somebody should help him to recover the funds that he's sacrificed as part of this effort.

    Hold up...

    So, it's ok for Google to, rather than even aggregating results, to search your email, profile you, and direct ads toward you?

    I'm not saying that this is necessarily a bad thing, but I would imagine that if MS were to put features into Exchange that would send the results of the equivalent of a dirty word search back to them, then they were to target you with advertisements, /. would be thoroughly upbraided.

    Wake up folks, California is protecting against something that /.ers typically don't like. The fact that Google is doing it makes it no more permissable.

    Personally, I think that it's a-ok to target adds based on such results, but I would prefer that it be done on the spot, in real time, rather than have the results cached.

    Things like this remind me of the most paranoid, annoying, emailers that I deal with daily. Something like 1 in 1000 emails are the type that I would ever stick a receipt on. For the most part, even those I would ask for a friendly reply in the text at the bottom.

    At work, I am somewhat compelled to use outlook. Here's my favorite setting:

    1) Automatically unflag incoming messages:
    -Think noone reads your email? Why not flag every message you send. That way, they'll all look importat... or, the important ones will get lost in the see of red flags.

    Do any of you have settings that would be good in Outlook?
