  1. Not much to see, really... on Windows Vista Leaks ... Again! · · Score: 1

New icons, transparency pervasive throughout the OS (task bar, window borders, icons). What's the value of transparency, anyway? What does it give you? It seems like probably one of the first things I'd turn off. Looks cool, but ultimately makes the OS less useful as it drops the contrast between a foreground object and the objects behind it. All the most highly touted features of Vista were retracted anyway, so why is there any excitement over this at all? All you get with Vista is more DRM.

Oh, and in the one screenshot showing the new Windows Media Player, there's no song by the Who called "Teenage Wasteland". It's called "Baba O'Riley".

  2. Seems like a great trick on Archimedes Death Ray · · Score: 1

Seems like a great trick, and I think Archimedes would have been smart enough to be able to engineer it to work, but it doesn't seem very practical. Yeah, it's intimidating to burn a ship at a great distance from shore...

Until the enemy attacks at dawn, or night, or on a cloudy day, or foggy...

And what if there are too many ships approaching to burn them all?

Given the ease of countermeasures, I doubt that they would have bothered to develop this novelty.

It's still a neat idea though.

Yeah, but this sonic blast will result in the torpedo detonating, so you get BOTH. Of course it will be bad for wildlife in the area. Pretty much any warfare is bad for the ecology. But hopefully it won't happen that often. If it does, we have other things to worry about.

  15. Not surprising on The GPL Impedes Linux More Than It Helps? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Having ethics is an impediment to success in many fields. If the GPL weren't there to enforce the ethic of keeping the source open, of course it'd be more readily adoptable.

You'd maybe see software technologies developed for linux integrated into proprietary commercial closed-source applications, just as they did with the BSD implementation of TCP/IP in MS Windows, or BSD/Darwin into Mac OS X.

It wouldn't bring about the desired effect of keeping software Free, though. What do we want Linux to be?
