in the example of the military having access to floorplans/etc, wouldn't this also bring about the possibility for the enemy to insert false floorplans and other things? (for example, a fake floorplan where the target "master bedroom" is actually a huge spike trap?) information warfare on a new level...
the funny thing is, and Flight (and Bharl, and Maletok) will back me up on this, is that on the MUDs I used to play you would have pwipes, deletions from angry gods, admins who hated you and just waited for that first bug abuse as an excuse to delete you, whatever... but after a few times of deletion, you start to get really good at rolling up new characters, getting them eq/gold/whatnot, and levelling them back up insanely fast. In fact, people who had that happen to them repeatedly begin to develop sets of characters just rolling, equipping, and storing stuff like eq/gold on in the background of their real playing. They begin to level faster than anybody else just because they've had to do it so many times, and they know the ins/outs of the game better than most others do.
In essence, having your characters deleted and wiped is not the big deal that you originally think it is at the time. If you're really any good at the game, it's only a minor setback. Plus, on the positive side, maybe it's a good chance to say "well, that's enough of that for now. i think i'll go do something else instead."
kind of like that one simpsons episode when marge gets itchy & scratchy cancelled... all the kids go outside, blink their eyes at the sun, and look around in wonder. wow! a whole world outside. chuckle.
let's just make this simple, and patent Selling things. we could make a bundle -- if anybody wants to sell something, they'd have to pay you to be able to do it.
clever marketing agents... throw the trailer of LotR into an otherwise boring Costner movie so that lotr fans will buy tickets to it just to see the trailer.;)
well i just finished it the other day, and i don't think it's the best game ever. i enjoyed it alot, don't get me wrong... the world of Alice in Wonderland with a dark, macabre twist is very enjoyable. i liked it alot. but i felt the graphics could have been better (more rounded, more... realistic? less polygonal? something) and the gameplay, for the most part (including killing bosses) was mostly just a matter of 'Running the Gauntlet' as they say. the enjoyment derived from the game is derived from a) the subject material (alice in wonderland) b) the macabre twist (environment and toys) c) exploration of (a) and (b). Although i've only played it on Medium difficulty so far, i doubt that it will be very hard on 'Insane' Level (or whatever they labeled the highest difficulty setting)... mobs will have more hp, do more dam... but since so much of the game can be conquered with a little knife-throwing or well-placed jacks/jackbomb combos, that's fairly easily taken care of. the ending fight (island-hopping while fighting the tentacled she-beast) quite reminded me of the ending fight from Halflife:Opposing Forces, only a little more difficult. (actually i just hopped around collecting energy so i could blast it with the blunderbuss until it died.)
anyway... it's a good game, but i would hesitate to call it 'great'.
if it's anything i've learned from online gaming, it's that people will always cheese the system and roleplaying is nonexistent. nobody roleplays... it's just a word. it barely has any meaning. roleplaying? what's that? it's just a word muttered by old dungeon masters...
people are stupid. people are greedy. people are lazy. you get guys named 'DarkLord' in MUDs, 'mrpoopypants' in cstrike, and both of them camp like mad because they have neither skill nor a clue.
castle wolfenstein was the first fps i ever played, and i played it through. unfortunately this had the side effect of totally, completely, and utterly boring me to death on the whole fps genre. i didn't play any more fps's until a friend finally convinced me to play half-life. the story progression was great. then i played system shock 2 (another excellent game)... RPG/FPS with great plot and sound thrills. the latest is Deus Ex, which IMO is one of the best games i've played so far. RPG/FPS with great realism, excellent writing/plot/triggers/sound/etc and multiple ways to do everything, with a persistent world (mostly). unfortunately RPG/FPS doesn't translate well to Multiplayer (shock2 and deusex both had multiplayer hacks(patches) added to them after the fact, but neither was very good, because neither was really intended/written to be multiplayer from the start.)
anyway...

ps. oh, and one more thing. GAME DEVELOPERS: while i realize that 'god mode' cheat codes are most likely really useful when testing a game, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take them out before you ship the game. Cheat codes suck! they're an infernal temptation.
after all, you've got to allow all the lunchboxes that will be sold to be bought, all the action figures to make their way through both the Target crowds and the Comic book stores, all the back-issue 3rd party books to be written and published, and all the cartoons to be made and released. the marketing cycle MUST complete itself, right?

are you sure that doesn't operate the other way 'round, with closed attracting script kiddies and open attracting hackers/crackers?

in fact, rules 3 through 64 are all "you do not talk about page creators." rule 65 is "you do not THINK about page creators"...

where were the american nazi wannabees during WWII? neo-nazis are just people lacking true direction imo, so they take up hatemongering instead.
