I work for an engineering company and we MUST have the ability to install software on our machines. We tried not allowing people installing abilities and it ended up being more painful and productivity took a HUGE hit.

The downside that people don't talk about is that denying people the ability to install software other than the IT blessed software is that they are stuck doing things in the approved way. That means that you have a chosen few people who decide how things are done rather than letting people play and decide for themselves. Not everyone would do this anyway, but you have always have people who do figure out better ways of doing things and then the whole company benefits.

It basically boils down to this, in order for a Windows machine to be secure and easily managed, you have to strip people of their creativity.

For some companies and departments this is probably ok, for others this is a death nail.

It's either because word does not load all of its libraries on start or because it is linked more efficiently, but OO.o loads slower because of the way it is written.

Please write to the hardware manufacturers. Tell them you want Linux support and drivers. When I was building my machine my video card choices came down to NVidia GeForce4 and the Parhelia. At the time the Parhelia didn't have a linux driver so I went with the GeForce4 that did. I wrote both NVidia and Matrox explaining my choice, lack of linux driver on the parhelia side. I didn't hear back from NVidia but I did hear back from Matrox. They said the Linux drivers were on the way. A month later I saw them on their site. This was about a year ago.

If the manufacturers don't know there's a market they're not going to both. I like to think I had a little affect in getting that Parhelia driver out
Remember, the manufacturers are interested in one thing, money. If you have it and will spend it, they will come.

We've set up an openmosix cluster and the linux native tools (Synplicity, ModelSim are two examples) migrate around the cluster very well so you don't have to be mindful of which machine you're running on.
We got a 3GHz machine and effectively gave everyone with a linux desktop an upgrade too. It's pretty sweet!

Check into AMD boxes. They run EDA tools about 10% faster than equiv. Intel boxes.
