Troll. There's a huge difference between having a state of the art stealth coating damaged during a long transcontinental mission, and not being "sturdy." The idea that the nuclear deterrent mission is no longer required is sophmoric at best. Picking defense spending as the place to cut government spending is silly. We've cut more out of the defense budget over the last 14 years then was wise, and the consequences are readily apparent to someone with a clue. Try to find one.
Also, the $13 billion is only for the R&D phase of the program. The entire project (if followed through with) will undoubtedly take much more money. I'm all for the space program, though not through NASA. I'd much rather have the US government offer a prize for putting someone (or someones) on the moon. Say $50 billion for putting 10 people on the moon for a 6 month habitation mission. If we entrust this to NASA, there's no chance of success.
Try swapping out either the mobo or the PSU. Dell has been using a proprietary wiring that will result in a fried system if you use non-Dell components. The recognized the error of their ways, but shipped systems with these "special" components as recently as last spring.
Being a Canadian, and having several Australian friends, I think you're so far off base it's amazing. Australia is far more American than European, and Canada is actually becoming more Asian influenced then most realize.
I've got to laugh at your opinion that until 1903 the US wasn't imperialistic. I guess the Lousiania Purchase, the American-Indian wars, the Spanish-American war, and the Mexican-American war isn't something you're too familiar with. Try a little research before you make a complete jackass out of yourself.
Europe is somewhat different. Western Europe is very much a post-modern society, whose power is economic and diplomatic (and in those areas FAR exceeds the US's power). And has little interest in Imperialism of any kind.
Potential power yes. Demonstrable power, not a chance. And the idea that "Europe" (as if you can refer to it as a single entity) doesn't have any imperialistic tendencies is silly. Ask the Spanish about their little tiff last year with Morocco. Ask the British about Gibraltar/Falklands. The French sure like to exert a little imperialisim in Africa as well. Lastly, the entire idea of the ICC, the UN, etc is so that "Europe" can exert it's will on the unruly savages of the world...
How much more deliberation is necessary? We've been deliberating for decades. Decades for God's sake. And all we have to show for the money we've shoveled done the rathole known as NASA (at least since the early 70's) is a crappy space station, a shuttle that is almost the exact opposite of its design requirements, and an robotic explorer team at JPL/Caltech that get's treated like the redhaired stepchild.
Besides, debt isn't always a bad thing. Going into debt to fund a lunar base and eventually a martian base would pay off handsomely.
The problem isn't money, or NASA, but shortsightedness. I don't understand how everyone assumes the Chinese can afford a lunar mission, but somehow the world's richest nation can't. It's simply a matter of priorities.
Coming from someone who's country's idea of sound spending is cutting their defense budget to the bone, your opinion isn't worth a damn. Also, he wasn't a manager for the Houston Astros, he was the owner of the Rangers. Now I know Canada has a baseball team (for now), but that doesn't make you an expert on the sport...
Come back when Canada can carry its own weight, and not ride the coat tails of the USA. And, I say this as an expatriate Canadian, so you can't accuse me of being an ignorant American...
Content providers have realized that "streaming" media is extremely expensive. That's why you don't see much of it past low bandwidth 'net radio. Multicast networks are not going to happen in the next 1-2 years (like the parent post) implied, and I wasn't looking out to the 8 year boundary. For all I know, we'll have flying cars in 8 years.
The idea that Joe 6pack will be able to stream HD just isn't going to happen until gigabit net access is the norm. If that happens in the next 8 years, I'll be a happy man.
Well I hope the "bright mind" has a pretty fat pipe. HD content requires about 18.8Mbps for a single stream. If this guy tries to stream to 10 people, he'll require more than your average xDSL connection.
Didn't offer it to the masses. Just to the poster. Besides, it's really not the OS that matters anymore. It's the apps you run. And anyone who thinks there's a dramatic difference between Mozilla on Windows, as opposed to the Mac version is delusional.
The great masses? All they need (or seem to want) is AOL. They kid themselves that they're computer "experts," because they know how to launch more than one app at a time. The majority of the "great masses" have no clue how computers function, how the Internet works, or how their own cardio-pulmonary system oxygenates blood. These folks dont' WANT an alternative. They want to feel like they're individualistic, but they don't have the stones to actually break off from the herd.
Buy a Mac, try it out, and if you don't like it, Ebay it. Odds are that if you Ebay it within the first 6 months you'll recoup 85-90% of your initial cost. Try that with any Dell...
I had a supervisor who was not only dishonest, but inbred. To relieve stress in our department we'd use one of the free internet phone services to dial his cell phone. Since our computers didn't have microphones, he never heard any sound. Here's how the first call went:
"Ring Ring" (schmuck answers the phone) ---bzz bzz (static) (schmuck) I can't hear you, speak up! ---bzz bzz (static) (schmuck) I still can't hear you. Call me desk phone at 867-5309
So we break the connection, and dial his landline with the same service.
"Ring Ring" (schmuck) Hello? ---bzz bzz (static) (schmuck) I can't hear you, speak up. ---bzz bzz (static) (schmuck now yelling as he slowly spoke) I CAN'T HEAR YOU.
Eventually our supervisor would hang up, muttering about stupid callers. We'd wait 5 or 10 minutes, then repeat the same process all over again. Imagine the fun!
He would eventually tire of this, and turn off his cellphone. So then we'd just call his desk phone. After a while, it would get hard to keep a straight face in front of him. We'd periodically call his cell while one of our staff was standing next to him. Then we'd rotate through the entire staff so he wouldn't suspect us.
Then (as that fscker Emeril says) we'd kick it up a notch. We'd wait until he went to the can. He was the type who could spend an hour on the throne. After giving him a few moments to drop his drawers, we'd dial his cell. The sound of him bellowing "I can't hear you." in the restroom would reverberate throughout our small company.
He tried changing his cell number, but since it was listed in the company directory, it only took us a few minutes to show him the error of his ways.
Actually, AMD DOES plan on introducing a mobile version of the AMD64 in the 2nd half of 2003. Whether they hit this ship date or not is a different matter entirely.
My experiences with OpenBSD developers couldn't be more different. I recently installed a new firewall after using Openbsd for several years as a DNS server. I was new to pf, and didn't understand how to configure it for use with PPTP/GRE. After researching as much as possible to seek a resolution, I eventually caved in and emailed Dan Hartmeier, who responded in a succint and professional manner. He didn't bite my head off for not knowing the intricacies of GRE, nor that I didn't have the ability to contribute code. Instead he simply helped me.
I think that while the image of Theo (and by association OpenBSD) as a confrontational person is prevalent, I think it is unfair to tar everyone who uses or contributes to OpenBSD with the same brush. Then again, this is Slashdot, so what should I expect?
Nope. You need two hotspares for the xraid. It's divided into two unique arrays...
11MB/s? On a good day, my DLTs give me 5MB/s. They're only rated at 6MB/s (native, not compressed).

Wow. What a cogent reply. I'd mod you "informative," but I'm still waiting for the monkeys to stop flying out of my butt.

Yes
God, you're killing me. You should get paid for humor like this. Leno would hire you in a flash...

Griffin comes out with some great looking kit, then manages to screw up on customer service/delivery.
Perhaps hegemony is what you're looking for?
I was actually paraphrasing Bugs Bunny. ;)
Christ on a fscking pogostick! Did you even watch the films? It's GREEDO, not GUIDO (the killer pimp) you maroon.
Fix your sig. The plural of virus is viruses, NOT virii...

Linux doesn't support PDF? If this is indicative of your experience with Linux, then most of your statement needs to be written off as FUD.
Can you point to a single reference that supports your idea?
Just because you've seen the plural of "virus" spelt as "virii" frequently, it doesn't automatically become grammatically correct.
You might not like or be comfortable with it, but "viruses" is correct. Virii, by virtue of its common misuse, is not found in dictionaries...
