Mac OS X 10.3.2 Update available
iumacboy writes "Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.3.2 Update (not yet active), weighing in at 38.2MB and available via Software Update. According to Apple: 'The 10.3.2 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" and is recommended for all users. Key enhancements include: Improved file sharing and directory services for mixed Mac and PC networks, more robust printing to PostScript printers, improved font management, updated Mail and Address Book applications, new ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers, FileVault, FireWire 800, WebDAV and USB Printing. Improvements from Update 10.3.1 previous standalone security updates." Also, Apple released Battery Update 1.1 for some of the newer portable Macs.
Two updates that require rebooting on the same day! Bah, I haven't reboot my mac so much since the days it asked (quit) (resume).
It never did print out my resume.
The update seems to make the fan kick in at a lower CPU temperature on my 12" PowerBook. I don't know about other models. I'm guessing this is a good thing, because I wouldn't want my baby overheating!
I'm downloading the update right now. I hope this helps with browsing smb. It was so easy to find smb shares in Jaguar, but in Panther I have to know the server address and share name. Also I woud like to start using FileVault...I'm going to wait a little longer before I enable FileVault.

Interesting that the battery update is for the 12" iBook and not the 14" iBook. I just ordered a 12" iBook from Yellow Dog Linux (which, btw, are shipping the X video driver for their Linux on Friday), so I will be installing these updates this weekend.
This is the Constitution. This is the Constitution under the Bush administration. Any questions?
Installed and booted no problem. Ran Verify Disk Permission and it didn't report any problems
I did notice that 'browsing' for network volumes now results in the mounted network volumes also showing up on the desktop.
Sleep your way to a whiter smile...date a dentist!
Despite not being mentioned in the release notes, Safari was also updated to v1.1.1. However, the only difference I can see is that the title attribute now shows up as a tooltip (which is a good thing, granted). Dave Hyatt's weblog lists many other changes post-v1.1, but in my tests they didn't make it in to v1.1.1. Such a shame.
That's a big update. Are all Mac users on Broadband or what?
The art is to leave it a few days then check macfixit.com for fallout.
As an aside, I can never tell if Apple's QA procedures for these releases are crap, or if it's just that the Apple using community are noisy bastards as soon as something doesn't work.
Anyway, leave it a few days. 10.2.7 says so.
Dave
I write a blog now, you should be afraid.
Has anyone tried this on a Sawtooth with GeForce? Has it solved the memory problem?
When you have nothing left to burn you must set yourself on fire
Well I was hoping this update was going to make browsing networks better, try again. I am at home right now and I have a WinXP machine with a couple of shares. The finder saw the WinXP machine, which it never used to do. Double clicking on the WinXP machine's icon brought up a message "The alias Rainier could not be opened, because the original item could not be found" (I name my computers after Cascade volcanos). Clicking okay on the dialog would not close the dialog. I relaunched the finder and tried connecting via the "Connect to server" menu item. It took 2 minutes to connect, made the finder unresponsive, and made the dock unresponsive. A quick alt-cmd-esc, relauch the finder and everything is okay.
It might be wise to wait a few days....

Of course, I read neither. Did anyone? Can we get a copy posted here, and a little analysis?
Please help metamoderate.
Whenever I read
'delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability'
I realise they're not going to tell me anything.
Why can't they mix up the language just a bit, up their credibility?
- My PowerBook instantaneously caught fire, despite the other reports of increased fan activity
- As soon as I extinguished the flames, iTunes started downloading and playing all the pop "music" available from iTMS. Charged to my visa, of course.
- The volume selector somehow moved all the way to full power, and was no longer controllable.
- My "Documents" folder was instantly transformed into a FileVault archive to which I didn't have the password.
- IE reclaimed "default browser" status, and began popping up Shockwave porn ads all over the place, much to the dismay of the elderly folks in the room.
Oh, whoops, it installed just great. You go ahead and try now-braxton
I can't find this documented anywhere, but they fixed Terminal.app as well! When 10.3 came out, they removed the "Use option key as meta key" checkbox from the Terminal Window settings. They've re-added in in 10.3.2! Now I can have multiple windows open in BitchX again and alt/option+# between them again! Praise jobs for restored functionality!
Does anyone know what was fixed in Mail? How about Address Book?
I have a website. It's about Macs.

The update seems to break 3rd party kernel extensions. The update unloaded all of my kexts and prevents them from being reloaded. This breaks uControl and SideTrack. Only bug found so far on deploying to a PowerBook G4 15" (Gigabit Ethernet) and a PowerMacintosh G4 450 (Sawtooth).
But does it fix "No One Lives Forever 2" yet? I still can't play that game under 10.3 yet.

For anyone wondering if this update fixed the the numerous video card problems that came with 10.3.0-10.3.1 the answer is a resounding YES!
:)
I can personally verify that the xclaim vr pro is once again working and the rage 128 continues to work. I've also read on the apple discussion boards that this update fixes the nasty 256 MB problem with certain nvidia cards. All in all it seems to restore functionality of all the video cards that were suppose to be supported in 10.3 to begin with.
yay, I am back to two monitor goodness!
For those who were curious and hopeful (I was so hopeful I went and early adopted this update :-) ), Mail.app still does not check IMAP folders other than your primary inbox when automatically checking or when 'Get New Mail' is used. You still have to 'Synchronize' or go 'Offline' and 'Online' again to force it to check.
(Note that this is with Fastmail IMAP, though I don't think that it makes a difference).
Sigh - it's back to choosing between easy and automatic mail checking and automatic filtering.
This update hauls digital ass.... Run XBench and see for yourself.
Video screams (both LCD and CRT)...QT smokes...external FW800 drives perform as they should...life's good.
This must be a precursor for something big at MacWorld in January, 'cause it's fast! (Cube, iBook, TiBook & Dual 1.25 G4 all working great)
Thanks Apple!
After shutting the lid in disgust and coming back to the computer, SideTrack has become enabled. I have no idea why sleeping and waking fixed it.
Awesome. Just a note, for users of the iBook SE (FireWire) that had issues because 10.3.1 wouldn't let them change their displays ColorSync profile resulting in a horridly oversaturated image, it's been fixed now.
No more booting into classic to launch it's monitor control panel and switching it from there. Good times, glad to know that Apple does occasionally listen.

Yes, this is ridiculous. I can see all the shared machines on my Windows network but can see no files on them. If I use the "connect to server" (Apple+K) thing, then I can see them all fine. Pathetic!
Quote from apple.com: "Will do Windows: You can easily add a Mac to a home network with Windows-based PCs......" Endquote.
This is plainly a lie. It does NOT work and I am damned annoyed about it.
I got 50 minutes better battery life, now its 4:02 instead of 3:12.
With the big update everything feels alot snappier This is a good update unlike some bad ones, i'm running a 1.25Ghz PB with a GB of RAM.

Bah I say. Bah.
Boot up time for me is the exact same or so small I can't tell the difference.
iPhoto, iTunes and the rest of the iApps load alot quicker.
Able to find all our windows server and connect to it.
All items in the dock only bounce about twice now.
OpenGL effects in iTunes now run at 30 FPS almost constantly now. Before the highest it would go would be 28 FPS and it wouldn't even stay there very long.
The sleep light now tends to not breath as deeply when and in sleep mode. It also has dimmed abit as well.
Can't tell you about the fan or email yet. My email server won't authinecate and I haven't got off my PB long enough to allow it cool down to test the fan.
Very good update.
Well done, Apple, for fixing the driver issue that prevented this combination from working in earlier releases of 10.3.
you had me at #!
Unfortunately, the updated graphics drivers do not fix a standing issue with SimCity 4 that was introduced (or at least seriously exacerbated) in Panther. Since upgrading to 10.3, the game shows no shadows, building placement outlines, effect rings, or ANY "distressed" buildings (all you see is the ground tiles with no building on top. Aspyr said that this is a "bug with the ATI drivers in Panther" but since these new drivers in 10.3.2 don't make ANY improvement in the game, I'm thinking that Aspyr is full of crap.
Otherwise, I haven't noticed any problems with the update.
Since putting the update in, RDC has become quite unstable, crashing right at startup, or a few minutes into the session. Anyone else seeing this?
FYI, there is also an update for Java 1.4.1 that appears in software update after installing 10.3.2 (which went pretty smoothly).
The vast majority of us have multiple T1s coming into our houses.
No. Seriously, Mac users haven't used dial-up since they eliminated floppy disks and 56K modems from all thier computers a couple years ago.
If you bought a G5, you would be able to get Panther at a significantly reduced price. Stop trolling.
Was it the video card driver issue causing the problem with Chimera/Camino's "big blank squares" problem (after rendering a page with a lot of JavaScript, Camino blanks certain parts of the screen, that then show again when a link somewhere is clicked.)? This was a new bug with Panther, and the only mention of it on the Camino forums I saw had some buck-passing from the Mozilla team to Apple.
You are not alone. This is not normal. None of this is normal.
I can't belive it. Release of the 2.6 kernel, release of RotK, and now the 10.3.2 update? Pinch me, I must be dreaming. It will certainly be a merry Christmas for geeks everywhere.
Perhaps we are living in some kind of golden age.
patching whatever problem we all were carping about two weeks ago :)

It seems, that some windows configurations will break this. However this is not universal, and your sweeping statement is unwarranted.
In my setup at work, there is *no* problem for me working in a windows evnironment!
Trolly as hell... Don't mod up...
My ATI Xclaim 3D Plus, which was supported in 10.2.8, is not supported in Panther. Apple had been providing the driver. Apparently they're not anymore as it remains unsupported in 10.3.2. ATI refuses to provide a driver saying that the card is too old. It is, btw, still for sale at bestbuy.com.
This also happens in Safari and MSIE - certainly has done in MSIE since 10.0.
Seems to me your best option is to rest your laptop on your Lap where it belongs. ...Now your G4 Babytop is a different matter altogether.

I just need to say that I don't have this problem. I have always had problems getting the fan going even when I try hard as hell. If I leave the computer on my bed for 30 minutes or so (at full load - I run dnetc on all my computers including the iBook) it might start if it's not cool in my bedroom.
;)
A bit off-topic maybe, but I really think that the components can take a lot more heat than this. I doubt the CPU would take any damage at 75 C. Sure things might not last as many years, but things like disks usually lasts a month or almost forever. And the CPU usually never dies anyways (although high temperatures is said to shorten the lifetime). So I think they could tune their fan settings a bit more aggressive, at least on the iBook. The PowerBooks tend to be so hot that you can't hold them without gloves though
Share the bugs please, or refrain in the future from trolling.
Well I took the dangerous path and upgraded...only one small problem, the installer did the down load of both the battery update and the 10.3.2 update, and did the optimize to 100%, and then hanged. So had to do a force quit and restart, and everything seems to be OK. Still checking though. My Mac is a 600Mhz dual USB iBook. Good luck;-)
When I upgraded to 10.3 it broke my iDisk access behind my corporate firewall. Happy to report that this update fixes it. Thank you Apple!
And how long ago was it that Macs would ask things in Lisp anyway?
Apple has also released Quicktime 6.5 and iTunes 4.2.

Unlike some of the newer PB's out there my TiBook fan only turns on after about 15 mins or so and then turns off during normal surfing and using iApps. So it's not really much of a change for me in that dept. Mail works fine. It's Earthlink's mail server which isn't working. It finally authinecated long enough to get my 40 emails of spam and then it died again. The Preference menu now flows more easily now as well.
Yes, I'm having problems with this latest update. In fact, I'm in the process of reloading my 12" powerbook as I type this. What happened? Well, I was working on another computer and I wanted to hear this Delerium song called "Truly", it's really good. So, I turned to my 12" powerbook, plugged in an external 1394 drive, not firewire 800, and almost instantly got a kernel panic. I'm not sure at what point the installer was at, it was behind my mail.app that i was taking notes in. I rebooted and the poor thing just wouldn't boot up. It'd bring up some of the network services, like ftp, but it didn't bring up ssh. It never got to a gui either. Repairing the disk and permissions didn't help. This is only the second kernel panic I've gotten since i bought this kick ass, best laptop I've ever had last Feb, but damn, the last one just required a reboot and disk check! At least OS X automatically imports your system prefs when you reload a new system on the old HDD, unlike trying to import your prefs in windows after reloading right over the top. XP on my inspiron took a whole day to reload and get back to custom settings. Oh, there's the chime of my installer rebooting, looks like everything's back up and running now. Hmm..... took about 15 minutes, sweeeet. =D But man wtf was up with that? Time to try it again...
In my experience, places like Macfixit, MacResource, and MacInTouch either have two philosophies for the way they handle updates:
1) Report all the news on possible bugs as matter of factly, display all reports of bugs as they were emailed to the site, and do no filtering whatsoever of any information, despite the fact that most of the posts are drivel that no one else in the world can replicate and may have missed something that they claim to have tried (not everyone is logical).
2) Tilt the story to sensationalize the fact that there were tons of reports of problems to generate readership and scare people.
Now I can't fault any sources really if their motivation is #1, but frankly, this doesn't help either. I work in support, and I also take a gander at our users email list which we actually run. There are weekly emails of builds and patches of our software that are bad because they would be applied and suddely a whole bunch of problems would occur. Yet mysteriously they never would report them to support, and I couldn't make happen what they had happen.
I'll see emails on these site screaming at apple for making crappy bug fixes and complaining about issues that make their life a living hell, but I don't see anyone else saying this. I also see a lot of "me too's." The firewire 800 issue also saw a lot of people complaining about firewire 400 drives, which Apple claims are not experiencing problems. I'm having problems believing the me too's about firewire 400 because not enough people are having problems on those drives, and I have a general distrust of users who claim they worked on a problem and found it to be something when in fact they missed 2 or 3 other possibilities.
Everyone who submits an email to these places should contact a support rep. Unfortunately, support costs money these days, which sucks and I do sympathize, but on the opposite side of the coin you have to make sure this kind of stuff is real and not FUD.

I did some preliminary xbench's on my machines, and my G4's all got quicker, yet my G3 iBook (800mhz) got slower:
Powerbook: 84 -> 87
eMac: 105 -> 112
iBook: 34 -> 26
ya ya i know-running the latest & greatest on a 7 year old machine aint that bright, and i certainly know that 10.3 is not supported on the Gossamer. but xpostfacto managed to launch it and i had been happily running Panther for a month. the 10.3.1 update worked fine but this latest one did me in. upon reboot i got the "grey screen of death", which seems to be video card related. re-install required :/
ps: the reinstall worked great even with all the ram [512 mb], cards [usb, radeon, and asante NIC], hard drives [total of 3], and scsi drives [cdrom and yamaha burner] still attached. props to xpostfacto and the power of beige.
Alas I still see the problem.
I just wish the Mozilla and Apple developers would stop passing the buck and actually get the problem fixed!
Well, apparently I posted less than a minute ago so here's some light relief to make up for the crappy rendering in Chimera/Camino. (BTW is it just me or is Chimera still a great deal more solid and less buggy than Camino? What's the deal with that? It's not like Camino has any major new features except that search thing and that's a PITA in practice because you only have to brush your fingers across the keyboard and suddenly you've lost your place. Damn it! Damn you all to hell! Well I turned it off! Off I say!)
There's a guy with a Doberman Pinscher and a guy with a Chihuahua. The guy with the Doberman Pinscher says to the guy with a Chihuahua, "Let's go over to that restaurant and get something to eat."
The guy with the Chihuahua says, "We can't go in there. We've got dogs with us."
The guy with the Doberman Pinscher says, "Just follow my lead." They walk over to the restaurant, the guy with the Doberman Pinscher puts on a pair of dark glasses, and he starts to walk in.
A guy at the door says, "Sorry, Mac, no pets allowed."
The guy with the Doberman Pinscher says, "You don't understand. This is my guide dog."
The guy at the door says, "A Doberman Pinscher?"
He says, "Yes, they're using them now, they're very good."
The guy at the door says, "Come on in."
The guy with the Chihuahua figures, "What the heck," so he puts on a pair of dark glasses and starts to walk in. The guy at the door says, "Sorry, pal, no pets allowed."
The guy with the Chihuahua says, "You don't understand. This is my guide dog."
The guy at the door says, "A Chihuahua?"
The guy with the Chihuahua says, "You mean they gave me a Chihuahua?"
You are not alone. This is not normal. None of this is normal.
Just do what us Windows users have been doing for years now and pirate the fucking thing.
Oh wait, it's an Apple product, few to no warez sites give a fuck about those, guess you are pretty fucked then.
Well you only have yourself to blame for buying a product from a company with worse business practices than Microsoft.
Let the buyer beware.
Joke is on you fag.
Also as a majority of mac fags I bet your have some sense of "ethics" or some bullshit telling your to turn your holier-than-thou nose up at piracy, well grow up, your childish ideals are naive and stupid. Corporations don't deserve rights.
I never had problems with my FW 400 (OX 911 chipset) before 10.3 and the 10.3.1 update did nothing. I have updated the firmware, but the drive becomes unresponsive after a few hours. The only solution is a reboot.
These aren't me too cases, even Oxford acknowledges that there are problems.
You sound kind of ignorant when you spout pure bullshit like you are now.
You sound kind of ignorant when you attack me and don't analyze what I just said.
#1 I have experience in supporting bugs. This comes from my experience. If you can't see this in what I just said then tis you who sounds ignorant.
#2 admittedly I didn't say this, but I have a firewire 400 drive with absolutely no problems. It's some generic drive too. ZERO problems.
Oxford barely admitted anything, "there are problems" is exactly the extent to which things were admitted, but frankly that's a weak statement that we support people use to keep the user calm while we figure out what the hell they are talking about.
You have a problem? I feel for you. But based on your information so far I have no real basis for establishing its 10.3 yet. Why? I don't know you and I dunno if you are a shmoe or a tech guru. I deal with shmoes every day and each one of them SWEARS they didn't change anything between yesterday and today except upgrades the software, but then I find out they are lying and find a setting which they switched which, in their situation, shouldn't have been turned on.
I'm not saying you are a liar, I'm just saying that the resource sites are not reliable on bugs like this because all they do is regurgitate emails of screaming users who insist the problem is someone elses fault. As a support rep I merely must remain skeptical.
"All great wisdom is contained in .signature files"
Since everyone seems to be having mostly positive experiences, I thought I would let it be known that 10.3.2 rendered my 550MHz TiBook unbootable. Reinstalling 10.3.0 completely fixed the problem (and it still works fine after updating to 10.3.1). I haven't tried putting 10.3.2 on again because, quite frankly, I am afraid the same thing will happen again. Just make sure you have your 10.3 discs on hand before you install.
Anyone else have this problem?
