I feel the same way. I keep a corded phone in my kitchen for situations like that. They are also particularly helpful in diagnosing line problems, as I've had cordless phones act up in ways that indicated the line was dead, but in reality the phone wasn't working right.

There are some pretty good prices on home phone over the internet (Optimum from Cablevision, in my area), but I don't like the idea of having to rely upon power or my ISP in order to use my phone. It's nice to be able to use dialup on the laptop as a last restort in a power outage.

No, but the extra stuff is expensive, in one way or another. On a PC, it's expensive in terms of resource usage. IRL, the canopener is bound to be more expensive than one that doesn't have the extra rubber. Question is, are you willing to pay? Many of people are happy to sacrifice CPU for pretty.

There are still a lot of good lawyers out there. Perhaps you've heard of the ACLU? If not, I'm sure you could find any number of mentions of their work on any number of freedom-related topics in the /. archives.

Not everyone goes into law to chase ambulances or become a barrator (though you often have to start there).

First of all, nothing said that the ball moves 1 cm and the roach moves 1 m. It says that the roach walks and the vehicle moves. That's sorta like me walking on top of a log and rolling down the street. Sure, I'm rolling along the street, but I'm still expending just as much energy to do so. Also, what airline are you flying that makes you walk to power the plane?

Maybe I'm retarded, but isn't this a "vehicle" in the same way that the Flinstone car is a vehicle? I mean, the roach still has to walk anyway. What does this research actually teach us? I had to burn a copy of the installer from a different PC in order to even get the virus software onto the laptop.
