A cube with a keyspan ir reciever, s-video out to a tv. 500mhz w/ a ATI radeon card for video, OS X. Capture keyspan remote signals to your universal remote(throw in a burn button), (or try capturing a Macally ir keyboard's signals into a Phillips-type universal remote) and use itunes or an ogg-player through your tv from your couch, pop in a blank and pick out a mix for a friend.
Wired has truely become a worthless source of factual information...
"For example, the API that allows for custom menus and icons on the right side of the top menu bar, next to the clock, prohibits all but Apple-approved menu items. "
Funny, I'm running Jaguar and have both LaunchBar and FuzzyClock running just fine in my menu bar...
I can't speak for all menu-apps but I don't think this article really speaks the truth.
Isn't this kinda like blaming ferrari for global warming? I don't quite see how '5%' of the computing population could be responsible for the decline in 'insert favorite medium here'...
As an aside, I think the term 'rip' has been misinterpreted...I remember when iTunes came out and I had to explain to someone that 'rip' was parlance for extracting songs off a CD...not 'ripping off the musicians' by downloading illegally obtained music.
I would imagine no Linux House is nearly as monolithic as MS. If 'Windows Today' was being astroturfed by MS, it would implicate a much larger entity at work. LinuxToday's incident would simply register as a bump on the fabric of the Linux World. It's landscape has a few peaks spread over a wide area as opposed to MS whose terrain is shallow and dominated by a tall spire.
Reminds me of the Pathfinder that someone installed a powerbook and a touch screen in. The form-factor seems perfect for an automotive installation...just add a display in the dash and presto...an overpriced car stereo.
I do think Terrasoft makes a nice linux distro though.
The most upsetting thing about the demise of Home Grocer/Webvan is the fact that the CEO they hired and fired within the last year(not the present CEO), who managed to burn through all the money they had and who made sure that Home Grocer(the more efficient model of the two) was forgotten after it was swallowed up, will still receive close to $30,000 a month -- FOREVER! -- seriously...though I wonder who will be cutting the checks.
Maybe them closing shop is a tricky way to forfeit their obligation to this scumbag suit. It seem like $360,000 would be a decent sum to save each year -- a worthwhile excuse to go through bankruptcy proceedings.
E.K.
Somewhat off-topic, but I once read something about one of the most interesting occurrences of atomic radiation in nature. It seems that somewhere in Northern(?) India there is a region with natural deposits of uranium/plutonium/? Small deposits, but enough that when there is sufficient pressure from the mountain's own weight or seismic activity, occasionally there are actual micro-'detonations' with fallout, etc...
While I don't think there is a God, if 'She' exists, I bet She's screening her messages, has filed for a restraining order, and is staying as far away from the Earth and all it's inhabitants as She possibly can.
As for Jesus, he was a great Rabbi, and a free thinker(hell, his best friend was a prostitute). It amazes me how his modern 'followers' don't have a clue as to what he was really about, instead believing as true, the bastardized/ censored/ translated/ mind-control/tripe in the King James Version. If anyone really cared, they'd learn an ancient language and read what was really written(It sure is great fiction!)
Shake yourselves loose from the bear-trap that is "Religion" -- If you really have to believe in something to validate your life, try 'Gravity.' It makes itself evident 24/7 and you don't have to give money to support it.
He says, "games are pushing the envelope harder than almost any other kind of software-what else does a consumer need a 700 MHz machine with a high-end 3D accelerator for?"
This pretty much sums up the motivation of the 'Average Consumer' in picking out a PC, and supports my belief that PC users play games on their 1 GHz PC's and Mac users do work on theirs -- It's also why PC users constantly whine about the 'high prices' of Macs -- if I weren't making my money back one-hundred-fold on my hardware investment, I'd bitch about it too.
Just something to think about.
BTW I use six computers, and they run everything from OS9 - OSX - MS95 & Linux so I'm not partial -- well actually I am;)
It would seem that by bouncing back web page requests, the zombie boxes would at least be alerted to their own unknown complicity in the attack. They could then respond earlier, hopefully lessening the impact of the original attack.
How about any game for the short lived but ultra-cool Virtual Boy from Nintendo?
'til IAmTheRealMike is using OSX :)
I stand corrected :)
We got it at our house...
"select,play,select,3,0,select"
Voila! "jump to end" is now "30-second skip".
Next!

I guess "Extract, Mix, Burn" isn't as catchy...

Ah, a 200Ghz PowerPC 'SiGe'-4. Now if I can just hold off for five or so years...

Unless I'm mistaken, I thought, that "Third Dawn", the next release of UO, was based on a 3-D engine. No sigs, I just quit ; )
