I switched from ICQ/YIM to trillian a few weeks ago. If only for the fact that i dont believe in running 2 apps, and sucking 2x the RAM to do the same job. Trillian is the first 'fully functional' Multi-client IM i've used. Taking Advantage of most of the different protocal's features.
AOL may be killing AIM if they don't let multi-client IM's to use the protocal. I think the trend will be toward either a unified protocal, or more likely more Multi-protocal IM clients. It make SOOO much sense to only have one program running instead of 5 to do basically the same job.
I get so many complaints from not-so-quick users that thier computer's are running super slow, only to find out they have every IM client known to man on there and running. I switch them to trillian and they get their speed back and the ability to waste company time 5x times over:)
OK... so these things have a fairly limited and predictable life span. And there's thousands of good sized objects up there that WILL fall(what goes up must come down, unless you put it waaaay up there)
There REALLY should be a way to contoll the destruction better, instead of just letting it drop. Granted making it drop might be better, but this thing will still have some pretty good chunks hitting the ground. Why not design them to break up or be broken up more thoroughly. Somewhat similar to what an Indy Car does when hitting a wall.
Putting explosives and the like would be somewhat risky, and designing weaknesses into the stucture might weaken it. But, having a 200lb chunk nail my house at mach 6 wouldn't be the best either:)
There actually are some indirect ways of telling if someone is behind an NAT box.
I can VERY easily tell if anyone on my LICQ list is behind NAT, just look at the person's info, and it will tell you their external IP, and the IP behind the NAT.
But, i'm guessing that's not how their going to do it:)
My guess is.. nmap OS fingerprinting. I do this all the time to ppl. The NAT boxes, like any other machine run an OS, that has a TCP fingerprint. I can very easily identify not only that its an NAT box, but usually what brand; D-link, Linksys, etc...
BUT, one way around it is to use a linux bux with ip forwarding, or even *cough**hack* Win98SE or newer with internet connection sharing.. i'll bet there's a way to sniff that out too.. but not sure(its gotta be in the packet headers i'd think.. but haven't looked)

and now the images dont load on ebay's auction page... that's just gotta suck to have your auction slashdotted!
I guess paying for a search wouldn't be all that bad if it increased relivance greatly. It'd be nice to find exactly the information you need on the first of second search... and only have documents displayed in the list that are relivant (search for information on cow's milk and click on a page that brings you to "Farmer Bob's Big Teen Udders")
Only catch is.... how do you define a relivant document... how does yahoo know exactly what i'm lookin for unless i put in exact keywords...
... but then again i could do that at google, hotbot, free yahoo, or watever.
And, you'd really hafta reindex the documents, but having a human actually look at the content... i can put all the meta keywords and description i want in a page and still not have it anywere near relivant... and to pay ppl to do that's gonna be more expensive... so doesn't seem very cost effective.
Hmm... so a huge company that buys everything in sight sues another company cuz they buy everything in sight...
Strange... almost a last straw tactic.. they can't buy out RedHat for their operating system division(geez.. that'd make them almost parallel univers kinda companies... ), so they try to kill MS with a lawsuit?
Didn't get get the same line with the HP/Compaq deal?
First it was a big rumor that it was going to happen.
Then HP 'backed out' and denied it...
then it was back on in a week...
hmm... Funny this happens right after Cox says he'll leave under AOL.

40bit being crackable's the point of exporting it!! Why should we provide orhter countries with a tool that will protect them from our spies!! DUH!! Let'm develope their OWN encryption!
At least that's Unlce Sam's opinion...
Me on the other hand.. don't care much.. I dont have anythinge needing encryption overseas.. and dont mind if i can or can break thiers... but hey.. get off their duffs and write it!!
I could use my hotmail accout i check every 2 months and just collects spam:)
and if it gets more spam from microsoft.com sellin XP i'll know y!
Seriously though... is this really neccesary? can i get all the email addresses of people subscribing to a white sepremacy, or other such hate group when involved in a lawsuit(civil, not necessarily criminal case)...
... that, and does EVERYONE subscribing to the list oppose microsoft? I'll bet there's a few ms execs on the list:)
... do they just wanna find out who hate them? watchout slashdot!!! they'll make you turn over all our user account info soon!!!!
My Local Provider provides digital cable, phone line and DSL for $74.95 per month!! (see Digital Connect 2) AND it says individually these services are $96!!!
Oh, in case they change it, basically they have a list of news stories,
and one of them links simply to a page advertising (not surprisingly) X-10. The link isn't marked as an ad -- its simply one of the headlines in
the news list. It's one thing to have more ads... it's another to
simply disguise the ad as actual news.
So.. which link is it then?
Could it be just an error with the page? Or your browser load it funny(i've seen that with my Norton Internet Security ad blocker... makes the ad in slashdot disappear, and puts it in as one of the icons... weird)

Slick idea.. building in SMTP so it doesn't need an email client... on reason for making your SMTP server require a logon! Geez, i thought LAN hoppers like Nimda and the like spread quick...
Anyone thought of a lightweight FTP server built into the virus? That would prove more interesting than CodeRed, everyone's machine be wide open anonymouse FTP server. That random file sending crap's for the birds, let everyone see all your files!
Er... what am i thinking? you dont need a virus for that, you need XP!:)
Or a solar hat! I say that last one because I would love the fidora to come back
:)
I second that!! I had hoped that RedHat would have done this too, but a red fidora really isn't as cool as a black one
