    I spend money on my hobbies, but by the end of the year you would have made more selling me all the ordinary things like toothpaste, shampoo, frozen pizza. I think the most I've spent on a hobby in a year is when I purchased a new guitar and stack I spent about $3k that year. I spend more than twice that on food alone.

    What about "Yahoo Sports!" but not geared towards "jocks" but "normals"?

    Sounds like my brother and his friends... they watch and talk about sports almost religiously but would probably fall down and pass out if they ran up and down the basketball court a couple times.

    I moved to Illinois and lived there for a few years I don't remember if it was 93 or 94 but there was a terrible blizzard shortly after I moved there. I woke up to find my car buried under a drift of snow and after digging it out it had to be towed and set in a heated garage for 2 days before they could change all the fluids and battery which had all frozen.

    When I was kid it was 15 cents for a soda and 5 cents for an extra squirt of syrup so... Dr. Pepper with Double Cherry 25 cents, I really miss that and I'm not talking about the price. I have thought about putting nice soda fountain in my rec-room but I don't drink enough soda to make it worth it.

    I was reminded of a time when I had to do exactly that... It was an awkward situation where an entry level {hourly wage} employee had already placed a request for remote access but had been been denied by his management.

    I like go getters that are willing to put in some extra time to do a good job but if the company doesn't want you taking files home and won't give you remote access then chances are you shouldn't be looking for a way to do it.

    I live in the US mid-west and I am not a hunter or fisher, {I don't have the time} but I know more than a few. The culture here {not everywhere, but here} is one of respect and responsibility. I've never seen a truck load of drunk hunters kicking up dust and tossing beer cans as they drive through the fields scaring up the game and shooting from the truck bed except in some bad Hollywood adaptation.

    The hunters and fishers that I know, don't take more than they eat, make sure the animal doesn't suffer, and are very serious about safety and responsible use of a gun. {boat safety also for those fishers, electric motors preferred over gas as not to pollute the fishing environment, etc..}

    Bow hunting is strictly regulated here and you can bet that fish and game will have someone checking up on you {I can barely pull a bow dialed up to the proper weight for hunting and an inspection is required to get that license which is why I rarely see a bow hunter}

    Most of the people in my office are very aware that sitting at a desk 9-12 hours a day is bad after one of our younger coworkers managed to go to the hospital for a back problem because he sneezed. Small portable exercise equipment is not uncommon.

    We have a lot of musicians also, there used to be a couple bands that worked in our Tier I helpdesk, a 60,70,80,90s rock/metal cover band and a metal core band. They would bring their guitars in and have them setting up in their cubicles. {can't leave them in the car they would get stolen or the temperature would mess up the neck} They used to try and stump me with questions after they found out that I have more credits in applied music than cs.

    People are complex, I would likely get no hits if I joined a dating site. After reading about my career you would think either the photo is a fake or the profile description. I don't fit with how Hollywood portrays the computer nerd as a matter of fact most of the people I work with don't.

    My wife and I have a running joke, I'm her husband the nerd but when her new friends or coworkers meet me they are surprised by my long blond hair, jeans, and t-shirt because I'm a regular guy, I hit the heavy bag, I like motorcycles and classic cars, I do my own lawn work, like to BBQ. As soon as the part comes in I have bike that needs an ignition coil and another I need to rebuild the top end.

    I expect that most of the people on /. are more than just one thing

    My brother uses an android tablet at work {mostly for email, forms, and looking up inventory has a keyboard for it at his desk}

    I had a mechanic at the motorcycle shop look up a part on an iPad for me the other day {he was using a stylus cause his hands were covered in grease and gunk}.

    Tablets are making there way into business more than just medical.

    We are talking about CS students the CLI is very important piece for them to learn as those basic commands stay the same {or mostly the same} where as there are many GUIs for the same thing. I can teach you about the CLI and it will be there but I can't guarantee that everywhere you work and every system you use will have that specific GUI installed.

    When you settle into a new job, understand all those basics learned from the CLI, and you open up a GUI you have never seen before {unless it is poorly designed} you will understand what those buttons are for.

    I kept thinking Ancient Alien Theorists every time the word "ancient" was used in tfa so H2 may have ruined that word for me, but the ingredients listed where not uncommon and did not include fermented badger milk or urine. I would try it.

     

    It’s a hybrid of beer, fruit wine, and mead, flavored with (among other ingredients) yarrow, lingonberries, cranberries, bog myrtle, and birch syrup.

    I don't usually take a side in the arena of climate change....

    The reason is that I have not been able to study all the data myself and if I did it's not my field of expertise. I do not however need to fund and complete my own study to know that climate change will happen regardless of our contributions and that when government gets involved someone is going to profit from their policies. If I want that person to be the average guy including me then the needle needs to fall on cleaner, cheaper, more efficient forms of energy production and manufacturing.

    I would like to have a smaller power bill and be able to visit family in Chicago with out the smog giving me a soar throat.

    I thought they would have tried the moon first. At least it's close enough that a rescue mission may be able to get to you in time depending on the issue.

    Dangerously low food or water supply the original moon mission only took 3 days to get there, mars would be an 8 or 9 month trip.

    I have a cousin that never learned to drive because he is not comfortable in cars after being in a terrible accident as a child, even as a passenger. He rides a bicycle everywhere and as a side benefit is in great shape you would never guess he was in his 50s.

    My 22 year old son doesn't have license because he feels there is no point until he can afford the expense of insurance, gas, upkeep, etc. that comes with a owning vehicle so he also rides a bicycle everywhere.

    Having no desire is not the same. I was drawing a parallel between safe driving and safely carrying a gun both something people take for granted.

    I'm not even against guns but I do not own one because I feel that at this time {with young children in the house} the risk outweighs the benefit. {After the kids are older and I have more time I might purchase a hunting riffle or more likely a fishing boat}

    I just had to renew my drivers license the girl in her mid 20s in front of me in line was there to take the driving test it was her 4th attempt and the clerk reminded her that if she failed she would have to start over she said she knows she has started over more than once... that means she failed the driving test at least 11 times.

    Six years ago when I renewed my license there was a guy taking the written test for a second time that day {It's an open book test and the book has one page for every question in the same order as on the test.}

    Are your certain you want everyone carrying a loaded gun at all times?

    Ammonia was one of the first coolants used more commonly in food industry, my brother has been wanting to get an air conditioner for his home that uses ammonia refrigerant but they are mostly commercial.

    Android's being infested faster than Windows ever was in the same timeframe of existence.

    There are far more established malicious software developers making money than when windows first launched so I would not be surprised if that is true. Regardless of how secure your OS is once it becomes the most common consumer platform then that is where the money is, it is a target, and someone will find a way to make that money even if it is playing on the inexperience and stupidity of the average user.

    Up until this point the lamp has been the biggest area where linux is used and they are usually managed by more experienced {more experienced than a regular consumer} admins. I imagine that the quality of admin increases as the monetary reward for an exploited lamp increases making it more difficult to turn some easy bucks. Making it a not so promising target although it is not unheard of for an exploit to happen.

    It's usually male teachers that he has a problem with but not with all of the male teachers. I have talked to all of them they were rude had confrontational attitudes and just didn't appear like they where happy with where they were.

    The male teachers he did like had a good attitude and appeared to enjoy the subjects they taught especially his computers teacher. {He was excited to have a kid with so much exposure to computers in his class, for some reason I have this feeling he is going to ask me to make a presentation to his class}

    As for the female teachers he has had some favorites they are either the older grandmother types {not surprised he loves his grandma} or the young fresh out of college cute ones {he is after all a 14 yr old boy}

    mid to late 90s McAfee would corrupt the network stack when you tried to uninstall it. I worked at an ISP at the time and I used to dread the words "I uninstalled McAfee"

    My mother is 65+, retired, and used a computer at work everyday from the 80s until she retired {from the DMV} a couple years ago. She may not know how to repair the hardware but does fine keeping her PC/Software/AV up to date, staying off of questionable sites, not opening unexpected unknown attachments in her email, setting up a new printer, new wireless router, not installing random adware/malware garbage.

    A big part of the problem is how some teachers jump to conclusions. I have had teachers try to diagnose and put pressure on me to have my sons medicated at various times for ADD/ADHD but they are not doctors.

    Most recently it was a history teacher who claims to ""have experience working with kids that have ADD"". After his history teacher interrupted me multiple times, refused to listen, and acted like a condescending jerk {no mystery what's going on here}, I was glad to find the rest of my son's teachers thought he was a great kid, payed attention, participated in class, and helped others.

    {Almost all of his teachers had a story about how my son fixed electronics in the classroom for them like computers, printers, projectors... apparently he is already tech support for his junior high}

    The theater where I live, and it's a small town, has ushers that basically just flirt with the girls at the candy stand so no help there.

    If I drive 30 miles I can go to theater with actual security and tasers so it doesn't have the kids playing or loud cell phone people but it's so crowded and expensive {$5 for a 12oz bottled water?!?!?} that I rarely go there either.

    Not as small as some mid-western towns but small enough. You got all that from my writing style? Very good observation.

    Eating somewhere else would have meant buffet type restaurant {I hate buffets}, fast food, or a 30 mile drive. The waitress would have been more likely to cry or quit before she would have kicked anyone out of the restaurant.
