I don't want to sound like the devil's advocate but we were almost on the verge of getting such terms from Microsoft. Windows XP uses Passport authentication to log in to your workstation. In a twisted way, this actually implies what you have just denied. Don't bet all your horses on your claim dude.

I would consider such an option, only if it were LEGAL. Right now, DivX ;-) movies are the synonymous with the dark side of the movie industry. None of the movie companies offers a service where you can legitemately download a movie. I would be very willing to pay for half the price and download my own copy of the movie. But until they keep their eye blinkers on and want to protect their investment in the DVD business, I do not see this happen in the near future.

Download a DivX ;-)?? ... Its illegal. I would prefer wait until they screen it on my cable movie channel :-) !!

I believe you are right in saying that these toys are not suitable for a webserving farm, because of the reliability factoy. These machines have been tested to run for hours, but surely not days and weeks.

I would still like to note that the CPUs on these computers can still be used for a great Beowulf cluster. They got the CPUs and the memory. The ethernet is standard. In a cluster, reliability is still an issue, but you can balance it out with a certain level of redundancy. I think that it pays much more in that department. And after all, Beowulf clusters are usually a bunch of old unused computers that are put together to be still of use. I am not trying to say that it will be easy.

Microsoft have claimed that it will be difficult to get passed their encrypted BIOS. So I guess that we all take up the challenge.

I guess that Crystal Space would be a mature enough product, in a years time. It supports many platforms and makes it extremely easy to port a game to different platforms, almost at compile time. Its also under LGPL.. so it will make everybody happy. Developers are flexible to tweak the engine to optimise it more, and still can keep their product closed and get money. Sounds a win-win situation for all computer platforms who want their favourite software publishers to use it. Its also good for all the lazy dudes who don't want to do a 3d engine from scratch. I think you are over generalising!! This really seems like you are saying that the FSF has brain washed all Linux users to use only free software. When people go to the Luna park, they expect a good evening of entertainment. That applies for computer gaming. Everyone expects a good experience from a game and that is why Linux users would be ready to pay for a Linux native product. If the product is a malformed port from Windows, then they will screw the whole concept and dual-boot as usual.

Life is great when you can play Q3A and still keep that uptime going :-) Keep it up iD!!

and Microsoft is damn scared about it. They are helpless to the opensource environment because company politics are now useless. They surely produce some free products and we apreciate their effort, but I think the real problem over here is not the pricing of the package. OK... Opensource OSes are cool because they come with a $0 +Bandwidth price tag. But ultimately we do not use such an OS cause of that. Its the ability for me to have a say and do something about a piece of software at my own will that empowers me with this opensource OS. I do not have to respond to company orders in developing a product further than it is, and they do not have control over that. THIS maddens them.
