The article I read talked about M$' "rights management" doing crap like limiting playing of tunes and so on. You can be sure that no Napster user will move to this. User hostile and useless in the extreme!
Yes, they will probably try to foist.wma's on the user base. No, they won't succeed, I don't think.
Repeat after me: flat rate, unlimited MP3 sharing or NOTHING. The model is ASCAP: royalties are apportioned by share of downloads.
Right, and the smart makers won't implement it. There are lots of non-Sony, non-Sharp, non-Toshiba, non-Philips makers out there who would love to get a bigger share of the market and would gladly use this as a way to do so. Think of the MP3 Discmans the smaller electronics makers ship now, or VCD... someone will ship hardware that's user-friendly, or I'll eat my hat.
Well, CNN is often guilty of this sort of thing... but I agree, I thought you needed to say that someone was an "alleged" perp until he was actually convicted.
I still have mine, but did get a G3. There were some awfully tempting trade-in programs a couple of years ago - for whatever reason I failed to participate. Oh well!
I had one of these (PB 5300, well known as the Exploding PowerBook due to Li-Ion batteries that caught fire) - mine didn't explode, but it did squeal like mad when it was charging the battery. I am now much happier with my G3!
Here's an example of fair use that requires the original video.
Suppose you're a Senator who really hates pr0n. In particular, you hate the fact that the MPAA gives R ratings to movies with full frontal nudity like Basic Instinct. And you want to claim that the famous Sharon Stone shot is sick and wrong, and the MPAA is poisoning the minds of America's youth.
So you prepare an angry video (strictly for your fellow Senators, of course) blasting the MPAA and including the famous shot. Without access to the original video, without CSS and without Macrovision, it will surely be blurred to such an extent that the message of youthful innocence lost by frankness about genitals will be lost!
So really, it's all for the sake of America's children. Tell that to the judge!
When I did a bit of tech support a few years ago, the best term for those who couldn't or wouldn't RTFM was PEBKAC: Problem exists between keyboard and chair. True now as ever!
Another post here talked about how Memory Stick only supports Sony's user-hostile, proprietary, copy-protected, and generally useless ATRAC format - and the infamous Music Clip's PC software deletes your MP3s when converting to ATRAC. Yet the website talks of MP3 support.
Does anyone have experience using actual, unfucked-up MP3s on this thing? I for one won't touch a Sony unless/until I am convinced that it won't eat my collection.
Not in my 'hood it wasn't! Black spray paint, still there after several rain storms.
By the way, did anyone catch Sun's offer to help clean up the graffiti? Pretty amusing. "For us, it's just one more way in which we're helping clean up after IBM," said the flack.
As I recall these are called LADS (Local Area Data ? Dedicated? Service) circuits. Some telcos discontinued it when DSL came out, though, to reduce competition - of course they claimed it was all about reducing line noise and interference.
Thank you. "Trusted clients" can't work because the user has a strong incentive to defeat them! Sure, lots of companies are trying to make this happen, because they have dollar signs in their eyes, but enterprising users/programmers can always defeat them.
And Timothy: you say that DMCA will somehow prevent people from developing work-arounds. Maybe it will be illegal, but so was driving over 55 mph until recently, and that didn't stop anyone. So also "circumvention" tools. Really, how long do you think it will be before a DeSDMI is available to convert SDMIs back to MP3s? Ten minutes?
Finally, this: consumers need to buy the "content" for any of this to make money. Shit like this is always so user-hostile that it actively prevents sales / usage. Why do you think newspapers have the "Email article" tool? Because sending around that plain text increases pageviews and ad impressions - because it's user-friendly. This sort of thing, being intentionally difficult to use, will wither and die on the vine.
It would be difficult. IBM tried a "Butterfly" keyboard a few years ago but it didn't sell well so they discontinued it.
I use only laptops (one at work, one at home) since I'm one of those marketroids. For me the Apple PB G3 (Bronze) is super comfy; my Toshiba Portege is only okay; and my previous Toshiba Satellite was a disaster. I actually prefer the slightly smaller size of a laptop keyboard (I hate the MS Natural Keyboard and others that split the hands), but I really prefer the extra springiness and depth that the Apple has.
(Not to turn this into a "Buy a Mac" post, but...)
My recent fave post, A Tribute to the Greats, saved 29m, also 38%. So the savings are pretty consistent!
However, I must note that I don't truly touch-type, and most of the people I know don't - we look at the keyboard and frequently use the wrong fingers to type stuff. I don't use the "home" row at all! So I'm sure MMMV with Dvorak. Still, I will try it when I've got some time.

(!MP3 || !unlimited || !flatrate) == !Napster.
Right, but you can buy a Macrovision-free DVD over at DVD City. Don't want it? Buy without!

How many of you use SDMI or ATRAC vs. MP3? Show of hands? Case closed.

Seriously. This comment should be an article in itself. Submit to Features perhaps?

Umm, read the thread ... lots of people saying they're working 30-50 hours now, not so many who have the nightmare hours anymore. Interesting!
And at that rate, an exploding Linux laptop will make its way out of VA sometime in 2004!

yeah, but there's no backdoor mandate now, and there's no reason to expect that one will appear. First amendment and all that shite.
It happened in the movies!
Of course, it's actually (TCP or UDP or ICMP)/IP/HCP/(make of automobile)...

Oh, the Mac users were trashing Micros~1 back before Linux was even written!
And this is different from the status quo how?
Kunikov said there have not been any accidents so far.
Yeah, and laws forbidding us from using our cell phones on them. As if our legislators don't have anything better to do!
