    Sir, we have all this data that we are storing forever, and we had a little extra time. So we wrote a program that collated the data (ie , shows they watched on netflix, sites they browsed, stuff they've said) we now have this list that we can call "interesting people". Great work son! I needed something to justify another datacenter and this just could be it!

    If you are spending time messing with a system that is not going to provide you with a running computer after a quick trip to the store for a new hard drive, then maybe you should rethink your goals.
    And perhaps you would regret the time spent less if you knew that in the event of an emergency, your backup would not only save your data, but prevent a re-installation and updates and more updates and more updates, and hunting for installation media and typing in software keys.
    AIX had/has a nice system for backups: it created a bootable backup tape. Just turn the key, boot from the tape, say go and your machine was recovered completely. The closest I have see to that recently is clonezilla.

    They are willing to give up their information (valuable) for the opportunity and convenience that the private companies offer. Its a trade they are willing to make. The people no longer value what the government does for them at all.     We repeatedly hear that NSA is spying for industrial reasons. To give advantage to American companies. But the NYSE is full of foreign companies that are traded here. And those companies are in complex derivative markets. And the retirement portfolios of Americans. If its an truly international market now, but American companies are benefiting from the spying, then Americans are being hurt. Perhaps the difference is that foreign companies cannot contribute to politicians and political parties. Maybe that is the difference.

    Dont nail them for some arbitrary amount that will be isolated and written off by the accountants. Hit them where it really hurts them: deny them the right to compete in a market. That would be a real punishment for them.
    After all, they cheated. Let them be forced out of the game for a while. Then when they try to come back in, they will be so far behind they may actually have to offer some benefit to the consumer.

    Its mind boggling. Hey! They have a whole lot of hotels in Florida. MOST of them will have a complimentary computers to use in an office setting. Are they going to ban those computers so they cannot be used in Internet gambling? That will make an impression. It will impress people that Florida is braindead.
