I'm not good at any RTS game, so I don't play multiplayer to compete. I play it for fun, and I have a lot more fun playing with my friends while swearing obscenities across the room, then getting ripped apart by some kid in Korea.
Thanks for the response and that's an excellent reason. I'm not sure why I got modded flame bait when all I was looking for was something like this. Sigh.
I've been in several meetings with 3 or more races easily represented with only 4 or 5 people in the room.
I can't say that I've ever had that experience in my 3 decades of work experience spread across North America and Asia. Probably the closest would be a staff meeting with ~10 people of 3 different races (white, indian and vietnamese).
Diversity isn't necessarily a Good Thing and the most difficult moment (racially) that I've ever had in the office was when I did an inadvertent insult to a coworker in England that escalated due to differences in British English and American English.
Oh and neither of my two sons are white (they're PhilAm) and I'm following my job to India and looking forward to the opportunity to meet new people.
By a strict definition, I'm also racist. Australians that I have encountered (without exception) in international airports have been unfailingly polite, helpful and friendly. Clearly a superior group of people.
My next international vacation is definitely going to be in Australia.
If your market lives in a city of a million, and the black population is around 15, putting black faces in your advert isn't going to make sales. It will only make your advert look exotic, at best.
Which works. The first piece of junk mail I got when I moved to Japan was a flyer for an Eikaiwa (English Conversation School) featuring a picture of Celine Dion. Sigh.
It will be kind of like the slashdot moderation system
Not at all! Slashdot lets those of us who want to think for themselves to read at -1 (and skip past all the crap on our own) thus allowing us the opportunity to read everything.
At a minimum, they should allow opposition articles to be written on controversial subjects (in the same fashion that the "major" opposition party is allowed a response to the State of Union speech).
Wake up wikipedians! Unlike my opinion towards a socialist President, I really want you guys to succeed. The idea is awesome. The implementation is somewhat lacking.
Really, there are some things we can just assume people have these days. Indoor plumbing, electricity and broadband are among them.
I lived for three years (2003-2006) without the two former, electricity was spotty. I haven't had access to broadband as some people assume it exists, anywhere except at work or at high priced hotels in Manila/Cebu.
Instead, it was a bunch of drivel with a lot of snide insults to their prime customers.
Most people who post here hate WoW and despise those of us who play it.
There are probably as many folks here who are die hards as regards to LAN play as folks who want Linux ports to games. And those of us who dare to speak out in favor of Linux ports get flamed and modded down.
But that's the issue. It will not reduce the pirates.
Most of the folks whining loudest regarding the LAN issue say they would never buy the game any way. So, in effect, that's 0 lost sales. How much of a marketing impact do you think that has?
The same way I do (I have a crappy wireless connection) - v e r y s l o w l y.

I agree though, he and Congress together violated the spirit and intent of the 10th amendment, while very obviously not violating the letter.
I'll accept that but...
The same sort of 10th amendment bending was done over raising the legal drinking age to 21 uniformly across all states. That was different for a reason that you point out:
Second, this was all about money.
Yes. I fully agree. Keep more cars on the freeway longer at rush hour and you generate more gasoline taxes.
It not so far fetched. 20 years ago, more households had color TV than indoor plumbing. It wouldn't surprise me if 20 years from now more households had broadband than indoor plumbing.
You see, Blizzard is like a bad parent, and WOW is like the spoiled, favorite child.
You have a very narrow world view. WoW is like the prodigy that has succeeded beyond its parent's wildest dreams and is now sending tons of money back to its family so "everyone" (meaning Diablo and Starcraft) benefits. Most of the world (Asia) works that way.
However, just the basic numbers of 60% being able to connect via broadband and 40% not being able to refutes the posters claim that "most people cannot "connect online and play"
Blizzard has a big market outside of the US, especially in Korea. Outside of Seoul, I'm not sure how far broadband extends. Probably not at all, though the wireless is probably pretty good.
Well, I do, having lived 4+ years in the 3rd world and much of that in a town with no land line based telephones.
The one argument I most sympathize with in this LAN argument is regarding internet access. I *have* played video games on a tropical island with no electricity, let alone no internet access. I did it with a GBA, but it would definitely be cool(er) to do the equivalent playing SC with notebooks on a wireless ad-hoc LAN.
The world is not the USA and even in the US, internet access is not a given.
He wouldn't be able to access half the stuff he does if he was required to supply verifiable info.
That still doesn't work. See Tim May's LolitaWatch parody and my own (then anonymous) KiddieFind response in kind to the Clinton administration's attempts to legislate age traceability.
And note that all the stuff I wrote over 13 years ago regarding tracing through online databases, is more true today.
My hope for real name concept is that a parent would be able to reasonably track their kids activities and like the original reply stated, a good portion of the stupidity we find on line would stop because people would be afraid to be associated with the crap they type.
Not worth it to me. Once my sons are old enough to get online, I'm going to forbid them from revealing their age. I'm irritated by crap like http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1343929&cid=29156491 but I guess I'm no longer American enough to think there should be a law against anonymity.
Scott: "He called you a tin plated dictator with delusions of grandeur." Kirk: "And so that's when you hit him, Mr. Scott?" Scott: "No sir! It was only words, men can take a few insults." Kirk: "Um, Mr. Scott, why did you hit him?" Scott: "Sir, he called the Enterprise a garbage scow."
I despised the level x9 twinks in WoW until I read a long thread on the forums that contained many thoughtful comments regarding why people did it and cared about it (and also a ton of the usual whining crap that I had to skip past). I totally sympathize with the ones who wish to maximize their gear and then play against similarly geared people where the only difference is player skill.
Blizzard is one of the rare companies who really care about their customers. The massive amount of work they signed up for (after explaining for years how much effort would be involved adding flying to the old world) for Cataclysm is another proof.
I've played in exactly 0 LAN parties, so educate me brother/.er. Can you guide me to somewhere I can read about the LAN subculture in SC with your point of view? Do you ONLY play on a LAN and NEVER want to compete against different people who may be geographically challenged with respect to your coordinates?
Puhleeze. The only problem with your posting is that it is +4 insightful, when it should be +5 insightful. I agree completely with your conclusions.
There, better now?
I should have made this clearer, but there was a lot of confusion on mmo-champion when this stuff was first leaked a week ago. It's a data issue not a coding issue and for someone like me, that makes a difference.
Blizzard is doing so many things right in the expansion, as you pointed out, that they might be shooting themselves in the foot with regards to their planned next-gen MMO. Its biggest competition is going to be WoW, although with the battle.net changes, that may not matter so much if you can chat with your WoW guildies on the new game.

You are clearly not British then.
Nope, never claimed to be.
I love Bass Pale Ale and don't particularly care for Guiness. Does that redeem or condemn me?
Go there and you're surrounded by the rudest bunch of self-serving wankers ever to cause misery on the face of the earth.
Whew. I thought that was us USians. Thanks for clearing it up!
Who smiles and laughs at code with a friend anyway? Not hot Asian chicks.

Tiger Woods was used to advertise Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonda (a brand of canned coffee). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQdeV64oc4o
Very gutless on Microsoft's part. If the identical picture wasn't appropriate, why not just take a different picture?
Hmmm fish sticks http://thottbot.com/i27699 ...
How embarrassing for Microsoft and why didn't they just take a new picture?

Indoor plumbing doesn't need any infrastructure, as it's entirely within your house.
Septic tanks can be a major issue (and they're still a luxury). Proper sewers require infrastructure.

Middle of Nowhere? And you have broadband? I don't think you know where the middle of nowere is.
The middle of nowhere is some place that has no electricity, let alone even wireless or broadband.
It not so far fetched. 20 years ago, more households had color TV than indoor plumbing. It wouldn't surprise me if 20 years from now more households had broadband than indoor plumbing.
