Well, now that they're most recently Going out of business [slashdot.org], in steps IBM to save the day for them... a new line of iMacs is going to do insanely well, considering it's going to be the only fully-functional line of 64-bit personal computing, because I can pretty much guarantee Apple's going to have full-fledged 64-bit standardizing before anybody else. Apple's going to have an insane surge in users, a lot of the multimedia software that's been migrating to PCs is going to be happy with the better, faster and more powerful 64-bit hardware support and go back to developing for Macs... basically, Macs regain a lot of the status they've been falling behind in quickly.

I wouldn't bet the farm on this. The iMac was and is marketed at the average non-geek who couldn't care about CPU bit path, or memory addressing, or upgradability. And it probably will still be marketed at the non-geek when they go 64 bit.

Now the full on tower machines, those will be the machines to get for hot 64 bit CPU sex. not as cheap as the iMacs are, but they're a whole lot cheaper than say a Sun sparc machine, or other 64 bit box.

Most people won't run into the 4 GB barrier for the next few years I suspect. Most home users are just now having 512MB and 1 GB memory configurations at home. I doubt we'll be rushing to jump to 2 GB anytime soon. However, there is the chance I could be totally wrong and OEMs push machines with 2, 3, and yes, 4 GB memory configurations. However, I still think that is highly unlikely, as that amount of RAM still seems highly expensive. Espcially with the economy still going steadily south.

WRONG WRONG WRONG. The only people who have lost money selling consoles has been microsoft and sega. the PS2 sells above cost. That's probably why the graphics, CPU, and sound systems are all below XBox's level. Not to mention the fact that it's 2 years old, almost going on 3.

The SNES sold for quite a bit at launch for the same reason. The Razor/blade analogy isn't there with most gaming consoles.

I honestly don't see the problem.

Convergence doesn't necessarily produce poor versions of each individual device, it just makes that a much more likely case, but with something like MP3s, simple games, and of course, organizational and real work, there's just enough CPU power and memory that any hand held can do these properly, the only thing it would lack would be storage space for MP3s.

if these figures are anywhere accurate for an average performance, then why the hell does it cost 18 bucks for a soundtrack for a movie that costs a little bit less than the DVD? For example, the Shrek sound track retails for about 18 bucks USD, and the Shrek DVD retails for about 26 bucks USD. Only about an 8 dollar difference. Since the movie took far more money to make, then why are they selling the DVD cheaper? Even when you factor in theatre incomes, some of which goes to pay the artists who wrote/had songs used for the movie, the costs should be a bit more even with the production values don't you think?
