My friend in Massachusetts recently got hit with one of those when he tried to leave a startup company that was paying him badly. It turns out this was their employee retention program: Sue or threaten to sue very loudly and scare everyone else into staying in their underpaid positions.
He would have been out of work for 18 months with no compensation and no recourse had he not been lucky enough to find something in a non-related area. Even companies in california (where non competes are illegal) declined to hire him because they said they could be sued in MA.
I've worked for the state of MA and I've run into the same problem many times on their computers. Depending on where you work their IT people are really not that knowledgeable or hardworking and I can't blame them, they have to work with microsoft crap, I would be slacking too.

It might not seem like a big deal now, when the people willingly implanting themselves are the freaks. Wait until a good majority of the population is using RFID chips for money transactions and other facets of daily living, would it be easy to opt-out then?

Apparently the body doesn't like certain subcutaneous implanted foreign objects and cancerous growths build around it.
The other issue I would like to point out is that putting RFID chips into people and treating them as cattle has for some time been a dream of the uber wealthy elite classes. This tracks back to the eugenics movement to present day. See Aaron Russo's documentary "America: Freedom to Fascism".
