If a shop holds 50 maximum and you have a sit in of 40, guess what, walking past it is not something you can just do. If the shop has 60 people trying to perform a sit in, then shop bandwidth exceeded, user access denied. Same with a DDoS. The problem is not that DDoS manage to properly hinder their targets, it's that shop sit-ins do not. You get 10 people who target BigMegaStore with a bandwidth of 50 humans/sec instead of finding a better choke point where they can perform actual throttling of services. If megacorps piss people off, they can't cry when they get a shitstorm.

Seeing as lab computers all contain licensed versions for student use, why would one say they have a copied version at home when they can merely say "I have learned X at uni". The thing is, if say I was a PS user graphic design student, (I'm not), I would no doubt be taught using licensed systems on campus, but finding enough hours in the day at the 'right time' to use the labs to get coursework done, not always convenient. It's not as if Adobe would be losing out in that case. Unused but licensed machines (lab, closed at night), or unlicensed but used machines (at student's home, used at night). Can't really see the difference if both exist harmoniously in the student world.

Given the current cost of food/living, as a student I can assure you that is way beyond affordable in most cases. Students are fairly resourceful anyway, even if they're not tech savvy, usually someone they know is and student 'free' software gets around fast. In the UK my student loan doesn't even cover my accommodation costs, let alone food. I ain't forking out for premium software even with a student license.

Well the thing is, money into Japan will help to some extent. Companies that need to fund repairs need money from somewhere. Companies with money may put it to good (useful) use elsewhere in Japan. So you can't say getting buisness is a bad thing. Factories have to work, or people don't get paid and can't eat. Work from Apple will at least be reliable and in large volume, probably at a premium too. Some money is better than no money in a country facing crisis.

I wonder if you could have a system such as twitter's authentication to denote reputable writers. I guess it would have flaws, since how do you have someone be reputable in one field with interests in editing another outside their knowledge without becoming reputable inherently in the secondary wiki area. Maybe some sort of "degree of separation" where an editor has a reputation of 10 for their 'parent' article, 9 for a direct link, 8 for a link of a link...etc. Of course that would cause some changes in how wikipedia works, but these things do evolve. The idea of applying for a reputation to a certain topic would put most people off, but it could be done.
