This is probably the exact reason behind this technology. The thing is, as far as DVD on Linux is concerned, why is there such a fuss over software DVD Players? Before you go throwing tomatoes or moderating this down, listen up.

Even in the Windows and Mac world, software DVD is not the way to go. Yes it works and works well, but really hardware decryption is the answer. Not only that, with the DeCSS code in hardware, Linux DVD projects can remain open source and the MPAA can go suck an egg. All DVD Players would be "sanctioned" By the MPAA at that point and they would know that there's no Pirating going on.

Think for a second about the Creative Labs dxr2 open source project. I think this method is a good compromise between the two waring parties. What we need is more Video card vendors that have hardware DVD support (ATI, Diamond, etc), and more DVD Drive Vendors that come with a proper MPEG card (ala Creative) to write drivers for their products such that DVD is "properly" supported in Linux and everyone is happy.

    What think ye?

  4. Yes, but what version? on Will Microsoft Open Windows Source Code? (No!) · · Score: 1
From the article, it just says Windows. It doesn't say Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000. It could be Windows 3.1 for all we know. That would technically be an areed to thing and another loophole for MS to exploit.

On a side note, the article was very poorly written with many spelling and grammar errors. Oh well.

  5. more strong arm tactics-they did it to ASUS too. on Intel Attempts to Ban VIA Imports · · Score: 3
Intel did something similar to ASUS. Intel couldn't supply some chips for the ASUS Athlong motherboard, so ASUS went to VIA. Today, you see no mention of that motherboard (K7M) on the ASUS web site. Some stores still carry it, but it comes in a white box. no logo, etc.

Intel strong armed ASUS for the move, not it appears it wants to strike at the source. More reason to use non-intel hardware if you ask me. My MB is a Fic VA-503+, via chipset and my CPU is an AMD K6-2/400. To hell with Intel!

But the time you sign up for one of these services costs the same amount of money you supposedly "save."

I suppose you do save something in a sense, but when it comes down to it, it's just brainwashing you to sign up for a service you don't need.

But the one thing all of you missed (except one person that hinted at it when he suggested to kill the desktop, just didn't go far enough) is to MODULARIZE StarOffice (on all platforms).

Part of SO's problem is it's this HUGE monolithic application. Kill the Desktop metaphor in StarOffice. Break out all the main programs into separate applications. Use Shared libs where possible. This alone will help StarOffice dramiatically.

Then they need to improve file format compatability, add more formats, improve the overal product, optimize the heck out of it (really redo or get rid of the mail application. it sux) and more.

  16. Re:MetroWerks Compiler Sucks for x86 on Linux is Not Red Hat · · Score: 1
um, you can already do much of what you request. the MW x86 compiler has beat out virutally every (if not every) other x86 compiler (in terms of compile speed, speed of binary and binary size). So I don't know what you're talking about here.

The default behavior of recursively searching #include trees is the same for CW on Mac and Windows and Linux. Nothing surprising here. You can change that just by clicking the recursive search icon and provide an exact path to the include directory. It's that easy. Have you read the manual? It sounds like you're ranting on about things you've experienced but all this information is provided in the manual. You might want to read it.

Lastly, CW has a plug-in architecture. Their Plug-in API is publically available. If you want to write your own compiler to plug into the CW IDE, go for it! If other people want to do it, go for it! nothing's stoping you from doing that and MW encourages such action.

As for the mwcc command line arguments, I can't speak there as I don't use those tools.

  17. Re:Who needs CodeWarrior? on Linux is Not Red Hat · · Score: 1
OK, time to set the record straight! Since I have CodeWarrior for Linux I can comment. While the box says CW for Red Hat Linux it doesn't mean that it won't work with other distro's. In fact the CD comes with CW in RPM and non-RPM formats. So it should work with virtually any distro (there may be a few exceptions)

What the Red Hat label means is that Metrowerks has thoroughly tested CW for Linux with RedHat so that is the official support. Look for it to support other distro's in the future.

That said, yes it's a port of the IDE. Yes, it has it's quirks. But quite frankly, it will get better. It will look better. just be patient people!! the product will mature as time progresses.

Now, WHO is CW for Linux for? The newbie Linux user who came from another GUI environment (Mac OS or Windows) and is not familiar with vi or emacs as an IDE. Second, the user who uses CW on other GUI environments and wants to port the code easily (the project files are completely multi-platform compatible) ie: john carmack. And Finally the user who wants a GUI IDE to do development as a front-end to the GCC tools. If you don't fall into that category, that's fine. Use what you like and feel comfortable with. No one is forcing you to use an IDE.

Lastly, Metrowerks will be releasing their Professional edition of their Linux IDE later this year (check the website for details). It will use their compilers instead of GCC and also includes JAVA tools.
