"while Microsoft has sold 300 million Windows 7 licenses and reported record second-quarter revenue of nearly $20 billion, Zemlin said Linux people aren't giving up on the desktop market just yet" link
The desktop is totally owned by MS. Whenever anything innovative appears it invariably pops up in the next version of Windows and given away, in the process sucking the lifeblood out of whatever third party company MS has decided to eliminate off its Desktop. You notice that where Open Source or other non_windows systems have made advances is where Microsoft hasn't managed to achieve an effective monopoly similar to the Microsoft desktop monoculture.. er... ecosystem.
CLI is best for admin work, a few scripts and you've semi-automated most of the admin work. Compare that to the click here-and-here-and-here method. That's why it takes less staff to admin a Linux service than a Win er.. GUI one. Even on the desktop, BASH and a few scripts achieves more in a few seconds than minutes of clicking...

"Meanwhile, an admin over at CLI Inc takes the two address columns from the spreadsheet, copies them to a clipboard, and pastes them into a file on a Linux box. It's the work of 10 seconds to parse that into a usable sed script" link

"One evening in late December 1982, I heard Bill and Steve speaking heatedly in Bill’s office.. It was clear that they’d been thinking about this for some time. Unable to stand it any longer, I burst in on them and shouted, “This is unbelievable! It shows your true character, once and for all”
"In January, I met with Bill one final time as a Microsoft executive. As he sat down with me on the couch in his office, I knew that he’d try to make me feel guilty and obliged to stay. But once he saw he couldn’t change my mind, Bill tried to cut his losses"
“It’s not fair that you keep your stake in the company” he said. He made a lowball offer for my stock: five dollars a sharelink
"We found that computer servers on NASA's agency-wide mission network had high-risk vulnerabilities that were exploitable from the Internet. Specifically, six computer servers associated with IT assets that control spacecraft and contain critical data had vulnerabilities that would allow a remote attacker to take control of or render them unavailable" link
By any chance, would these 'computer servers' be running on Microsoft Windows?
"a recent audit report.. cited a 2009 incident in which cybercriminals.. caused the computer system to make 3,000 unauthorized connections to domestic and international IP addresses"
Wouldn't it be a good idea to put these 'computer systems' behind a firewall and only allow access through authenticated VPN connections?
"Power consumption is an important consideration in building a modern browser and one objective of Internet Explorer 9 is to responsibly lead the industry in power requirements"
This is technological BS, power consumption is a function of the Operating System. This article is just an excuse to trash the other browsers. A better title would be, Microsoft tweaks Windows to give own browser better benchmarks..
People don't want to pay for what they consider they have already payed for, to the ISP. What would work is some kind of micro-payment system where the ISP adds the cost of access onto your bill and channeled payment upstream to the content provider.

Like, why would a NIC reset command corrupt a 'computer program'', why would you need to reset the NIC to update a 'computer program' ?
> Researchers.. are undertaking an in-depth study of energy consumption.. with the aim of demonstrating that running a large network of devices on DC rather than AC is.. more energy efficient..
Well, it would be as , instead of doing the conversion individually in each switch-mode power supply the conversion is done in one single unit. Of course you then need to factor in the losses in transferring DC over distances, something high-tension distribution AC was designed to overcome.

A scene about two thirds of the way through the film finds Carrie-Anne Moss's leather-clad superhacker setting her sights on a power grid computer, for plot reasons better left unrevealed.
But at exactly the point where audiences would normally be treated to a brightly-colored graphical cartoon of a computer intrusion, ala the 2001 Travolta vehicle Swordfish, or cheer as the protagonist skillfully summons a Web browser and fights valiantly through "404 Errors," like the malnourished cyberpunk in this year's "The Core," something completely different happens: Trinity runs "Nmap." link
