I regularly use a VPN on my phone and home connection, it's been fine in the UK. If anyone did request my ISP records they would just see a very long term connection to the VPN, although I suppose they could enable extra logging beyond what is legally required if they wanted to establish usage patterns.
The problem with doing it on mobile is that it doesn't block the worst bit of tracking - location. The mobile providers log which cell towers your phone uses and signal strength, giving your approximate location. You can't do anything about it, it's how mobile networks work.
I had a similar issue with a weather app. Pulled 7GB of data, exceeding the mobile data cap by 6GB. Presumably it just screwed up and downloaded the same stuff over and over, hammering the poor server that is used to just sending out a few hundred bytes to each client.
It was one of the apps that came with the phone (not mine), so I took it back to the shop and explained what happened. In the end they cancelled the data charges and reset the usage to zero for that month, but insisted on taking the phone back for "repairs" too. A couple of weeks later they said they couldn't find the fault and would we like a new handset... So we took that and just disabled the problem app.
Pale Moon is okay but lagging in development. It's got the old performance issues that Firefox used to have. Chromium maybe, at least it's open source although building it yourself is hard work.
the kind of people that need a CoC are the kind of people no one wants to work with.
You blog (set as your "homepage" link) is titled "Observations From a Nearly Perfect Life". I'm guessing that you have never been in a position where a code of conduct may have helped you.
You will note though that no-one is objecting to the content; they understand that it's a joke. They are objecting to the use of a joke when having a CoC is regarded as a somewhat serious issue. SQLite not only has a lot of developers but also has conferences and other meet-ups, and sadly from experience people have had problems at those kinds of events in the past.
Unfortunately despite even the summary making this clear it seems to have been lost in the debate, mostly because people are so quick to jump on the "triggered SJWs" bandwagon.
They can't prove it because it's a conspiracy theory that relies on citing a number of isolated incidents over a number of years and drawing an unwarranted conclusion from them.
Note how the Wikipedia explanation doesn't mention non-white people can't be racist, and I doubt anyone would seriously argue that they have zero power in all situations anyway.
It's just a ridiculous mis-interpretation of an idea that is proposed and, as Wikipedia points out, debated and sometimes rejected by students.
Of course you know this, and wont respond to this post.
More interesting is that a couple of mildly annoyed tweets, mostly concerned that there isn't a real CoC and tha this might undermine the SQLite project, has blown up into a giant shit-storm in the meta-outrage community.
In this very thread we have people ranting about SJWs trying to destroy everything, about how they are the most disgusting religious bigots and racists etc. The meta-outrage is 100 more than the actual outrage. It's like XML but for hurt feelings.
SJW is just something people scream when they have no real argument, or don't want to admit that their real goal is to restrict other people's freedom to criticise because it makes them uncomfortable.
And I found a lot of the people who pushed for a CoC and criticised me for cursing to be hypocritical and pointless.
So you are saying he was forced to apologise by the criticism he found hypocritical and pointless?
And I'm still not apologising for my gender or the colour of my skin, or the fact that I happen to have the common sexual orientation.
Yep, SJWs definitely got to him, forcing him to NOT apologise for being a straight white male.
Because I may have my reservations about excessive political correctness, but honestly, I absolutely do not want to be seen as being in the same camp as the low-life scum on the internet that think it's OK to be a white nationalist Nazi, and have some truly nasty misogynistic, homophobic or transphobic behaviour.
And the truth comes out. He noticed his behaviour was similar to some pretty awful people whose views he regarded as "truly nasty" and decided that he should change it.
How did you read his statement that went out of its way to say he wasn't pressured in to it or forced to apologise, which did its best to debunk your conspiracy theory, and yet somehow interpreted it as evidence you were right?
Well the primary reason is that those people demand others self-censor and not criticise their behaviour, because it makes them uncomfortable and sometimes has other consequences. Of course they are happy to criticise everyone and everything all the time, because they think they are right. It's wrongthink that they object to.
But was laying it on them necessary, or could Linus just have said "no, this code isn't good enough, refer to my earlier email about it, patch rejected"?
There were not communists everywhere. Most of the people accused of being communists and "un-American" were not. Innocent people lost everything because of the witch hunt.
You say SJWs are hunting and destroying their enemies, yet you think the guy who famously did just that on the flimsiest of evidence, often mere rumour or aggressive and unfair questioning, was right. McCarthy, the poster boy for paranoid delusions of conspiracies.
SJW are threatening you and and your family for what they think you SHOULD say. Do you want to talk about actual emotional trauma, how about walking around terrified under constant threat of having your name and family being equated to the most genocidal monsters in human history? Every moment of every day any minor slip of SOMEONE ELSES inner thoughts and whimsical feelings potentially able to destroy your career and ability to provide for your family.
So, once again, for the Nth time, where is the evidence of this? What evidence do we have that Linus was threatened, or that in fact anyone was threatened in relation to this?
This sounds like the worst kind of propaganda, the fear inducing hidden threat that makes you paranoid, terrified that literally anyone could be an SJW and out to get you, and there is nothing you can do about it. Prove me wrong, by all means.
Most people have a problem with "diversity initiatives" that look like they came out of the 1953 playbook of "fuck insert race here."
And what does that have to do with the Linux Code of Conduct? What part of it is like a "1953 playbook of fuck insert race here"?
The real problem is snowflakes who are triggered by the mere suggestion that they shouldn't be assholes all the time (part time is fine), and then assume that it's a giant conspiracy against their race and soon they will be the ones at the back of the bus.
It's not "witch hunt culture", it's that politics is now post-truth. People just assume politicians lie about everything all the time, so in a way Trump is at least honest about the fact that it is all just lies. He doesn't really pretend to be telling the truth, he just lies some more and sticks to his story. There is a kind of integrity to it, in that he is willing to stand by his steaming pile of bullshit.
He did a video about the solar cycle way prototype in Europe. He failed to consider the costs of installing and maintaining a normal cycle way, and then a year later the numbers released for it debunked his pessimistic estimates. His speculation about the surface durability were proven unfounded too.
The biggest issue of course is that he was looking at a prototype, considering the cost of prototype parts and deployment, so even if his guesses had been right his point would have been irrelevant.
I'm not saying solar road surfaces are necessarily the best idea, that remains to be seen, but in his rush to get the video out he really screwed up his analysis... And then doxed the person who pointed out the flaws.
The multimeters thing is interesting, considering how bad his own ones are. Poor quality manufacturing combined with design flaws does not make a good product.
Or un-cancel Luke Cage and Iron Fist. I really enjoyed the former, Iron Fist season 1 was not the best but I hear season 2 is a great improvement.
And for the love of his noodliness don't cancel The Expanse.

Uninstall Firefox, move to something better.
Pale Moon is okay but lagging in development. It's got the old performance issues that Firefox used to have. Chromium maybe, at least it's open source although building it yourself is hard work.

Classic anti-SJW.
"I want to avoid causing problems for this person, I'm sure it was an honest mistake, let's diffuse the situation."
"LOL SJW bigot mob attacking!!"
Would love to see the slightest shred of evidence for any of this, e.g.
- SJW thought police organisation
- Getting paid to sit at home looking for wrongthink
- Toxic elements of the Contributor's Code of Conduct
I note that merely asking for examples is considered trolling on Slashdot, much like asking for evidence of god is considered trolling in church.
5. Not to steal.
6. Not to covet.
7. Not to bear false witness.
Steve Jobs would not be very happy ;-)
8. To respect all men.
Popular opinion on Slashdot is that respect is earned -> Slashdot triggered.
11. To chastise the body.
Nice to see that community getting some respect, although I'm not sure it should be mandatory.
13. To love fasting.
36. Not a great eater.
Dietary advice seems a bit OT, and also redundant.
19. To console the sorrowing.
Never doubt the healing power of the warm glow of an RS232 terminal.
27. Not to swear, for fear of perjuring oneself.
Fuck that.
35. Not addicted to wine.
Scotch is okay though, right?
40. Not a detractor.
I support banning all down mods.
49. To know for certain that God sees one everywhere.
Is "God" code for the NSA/GCHQ, or Amazon maybe? And does he really peak at me in the shower? 'Cos that's hot.
54. Not to speak useless words or words that move to laughter.
55. Not to love much or boisterous laughter.
Must be great fun at parties.
66. Not to love contention.
Mandatory network upgrades to keep the cat videos flowing, got it.
Mixed bag I'd say, could use a few minor tweaks.

Nice Hitchens quote by the way.

Oops.
Your bullshit needs to be purged.
Mah freeze peach!!

So people who support freedom of religion are SJWs now? Like the founding fathers of the US?
And I found a lot of the people who pushed for a CoC and criticised me for cursing to be hypocritical and pointless.

Functionally there is no difference.
Except McCarthy was right.
Holy crap.
There were not communists everywhere. Most of the people accused of being communists and "un-American" were not. Innocent people lost everything because of the witch hunt.

He did not reference being threatened by SJWs. Please provide a link to the statement in question and quote the part where he makes this claim.
"Marginalized people" cannot be guilty of oppressing "non-marginalized people" no matter how they behave.
This is a really weird myth. Can you provide a single example, anywhere, where someone has argued this in good faith, that we can verify?
Reminds me a lot of war-time propaganda e.g. against the Japanese, portraying them as barely human fanatics.
SJW are threatening you and and your family for what they think you SHOULD say.
