4GB is way too much, because after all 640KB should be enough for everyone.
Gates might (or might not) have said this, but, traditionally, it's Apple selling their computers with insufficient RA memory, so that customers have to shell out the premium for Apple RAM. Well, it seems that they've at least stopped using all available slots if you buy the minimal configuration (as it was still the case when I bought my Powerbook - however, throwing 256MB of Apple RAM away (the 256MB in the first slot are soldered in) and buying 1 GB of additional third party RAM (at Crucial) was still only half of the price that 1GB of Apple RAM would have cost me).
A test for artificial intelligence suggested by the mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. The gist of it is that a computer can be considered intelligent when it can hold a sustained conversation with a computer scientist without him being able to distinguish that he is talking with a computer rather than a human being.
Some critics suggest this is unreasonably difficult since most human beings are incapable of holding a sustained conversation with a computer scientist.
After a moments thought they usually add that most computer scientists aren't capable of distinguishing humans from computers anyway.
They've also discovered that W2K running inside OSX via parallels can build our development tree 25% faster than the quad Xeon's running XP on their desk. Go figure.
Wow.. you should try running it under Linux/VMWare, then. We've replaced Mac OS X on our Mac Pro 2x4 Core machines with Linux, because our benchmarks run about 20% faster on Linux (seems the OS X Mach kernel really slows down our implementation).
Then I decided it was alright but not really worth paying for.
Honestly, I think the album is awesome, definitely worth paying for. Especially, since you can decide how much you pay all by yourself. The reason why I'm rarely buying music online is because
the labels obviously believe that its ok to charge the same amount for downloaded music as for the physical CD
most of the music you can buy online is still DRMed (thus making sure that I can't listen to the music I bought anymore once the DRM mechanism is outdated and unsupported).
So in the end, you pay the same and get less. If, however, each song would cost about 50 cent and I'd get a DRM-free MP3 file, then I'd buy all of my music online.
They should announce the price in Euros instead of dollars. That makes the price 135 Euros at the moment, and it will still be only 140 Euros next year, when the price in US $ will probably be $250.
There was no talk whether it was the container or the RFI emission. I would have liked to see the results of 'dead' chips versus 'live' chips.
I wouldn't doubt this study. The fact that they've determined that "about 1% to 10%" of the sample suffer from cancer indicates that it's extremely accurate!
I'm using an open WiFi called "Honeypot", do you think that's ok? I had some strange transactions on my bank account, recently, I'm wonder whether that's somehow connected..;-)
Well.. "7" sounds more ambitious, considering that it took Apple 10 years to come up with OS X (Taligent was started in 1988 and abandoned in 1995, Copland begun in 1994 and was stopped in 1996, OS X was released in 1999).
I'd love for the scientists at Fermilab to make this sort of breakthrough before the LHC goes live,...
Well, Fermilab has already made the first step towards this goal. According to/., the parts of the LHC that caused the delay were designed by Fermilab;-)
This phone can be a hit in Europe only if Apple reduces the price by 25% atleast & sells it unlocked.
Last time I checked, all Apple products were 25% more expensive in Europe than in the US (before tax). So, look forward to that 999 Euro Apple iPhone;-) (in the shops, it will be sitting right next to the PS3).
They could learn to really let the users define the software.
Uhm.. I'm using Linux, but honestly, I'd rather not recompile a bunch of drivers after each kernel update, just because they aren't shipped as part of the kernel. If Linux is defined by the users, who's the jerk who asked for this 'feature'?;-)
nd you open source freaks tried to take SOME of it away
So the whole point of open source is to take some of billg's money away? (and on what facts do you base your claim that Gates is a complete jerk asshole?)
Good thing we have Apple offering vastly superior products at lower prices to knock out Microsoft's monopoly!
Yes. Too bad that that Software only comes with a new computer, and that Microsoft Office is again your only option... (oh, btw., I'm still waiting for that open source version of iTunes). An Apple monopoly would be far worse than the Microsoft monopoly we have now (and I'm saying that even though I'm using an Apple computer myself.. ).
I've read the article 3 times now. The author claims that, eventually, Microsoft has to open source office. The argument goes like this: Because it's not completely impossible to make money with OSS, Microsoft HAS to open source Office. Then he claims that Microsoft attacked Linux "proxy with SCO" (and I guess, this too, implies, that opening Office is their only option).
Is it just me, or are there other/. readers who are unable to understand this implication?
The US GPS system is mainly intended for military application. It might be shutdown or degraded whenever the US deem such an action appropriate. Just consider that something like the recent terrorist attacks happens again - do you think that US military would make a call to Europe before they encrypt GPS (temporarily)?
Galileo is supposed to be a public, non-minilary service. There will be legal guarantees that it can't be turned off just because some military commander thinks it'd be a great idea. Combined with GPS, it can even bring more accuracy (GNSS).
Another reason is of course that the project generates lots of jobs and revives research in Europe (trying to prevent at least some of the researches and engineers to emmigrate to the US;-)).

So, for instance, the laptops of the house would all use WPA and the NDS would use WEP?
That wouldn't really increase the overall security of the network. If somebody wanted to break in, he'd just crack the WEP encryption..
You can't simply count lives that have been taken, and even if that would be possible, I don't know of any recent war where 6 million civilians have been killed just for the sake of killing them.

I'm wondering whether the OLPC project makes sure that the working conditions of the company who produces the laptops are fair...

As long as George W. Bush is president of the US, who needs a car that gets 100 mpg?
