and i don't care what the proponents "think the intent is" it will be used to-the-letter of how it is stated. and i'm sure they know this (who doesn't!?). so to me it sounds they are even admitting it is incorrect.

my response is to start by simply setting them free on the computer - let them find their own motivations. i learned excel for an online game (and how websites work (rendering code in browser vs pre-compiled, how to manipulate sites via GET, etc) end eventually learned db's because something that i wanted to do in excel was too large and complicated... i would imagine others have learned by making their own myspace/geocities/whatever social sites.

but please, for the love of god, do NOT try to make them memorize the names of every button and object in MS word. nothing could be abigger waste of time, and those things come naturally through actually USING the software out of need...

a hypotheses ought to come from some indication of the answer being in that general direction. this does not appear to be the case in this article. but to be fair, i'm a fan of the mathematical approach as being the most reliable. start with only facts. add theories and assumptions only if necessary and solve. then create tests to verify after the fact. starting with the tests and trying model the solution mathematically is more good but prone to issue. the best example is Newton vs Einstein. Newton started with what he knew was the answer and worked out the maths to predict the behavior. Einstein started with the math and found a number of conditions no one would have ever guessed - and proved that a number of Newtons theories were limited.

starting with not even a test that indicates a possible theory, but merely what you feel should be the answer, is asking for a can of worms.

i don't think the OP was being a snot at all. while its certainly nice to be able to re-read the original message while posing a response or placing an order... this is certainly doable on a single monitor, and not all that dire. and at most, admin types have that email need and some matter of spreadsheet/document that they need to work from simultaneously. but programmers have the same need with emails (maybe to a lesser extent, but still present) and also have a laundry list of numerous code windows open, references, logs, chats, terminals, etc. often even working on several machines at the same time. so much so that even with 2 windows things can still get hard to find. it can be dizzying really. its like desk space for a structural engineer: they need room for their monitor where they have their RISA3D model and autocad open, the architecturals, shop drawings, graph paper pad, calculator and one or more books. (i've been both)

with that said, i would go the extent of saying that ALL people who "design" require more space to be efficient than those who "do".

  18. Stop fighting it... on Ask Slashdot: Are You Streaming-Only For Home Entertainment? · · Score: 1

the cable companies really need to stop fighting this, before they lose. i know a large and increasing number of people who no longer have cable. netflix alone is enough for many. add hulu, etc and shy of wanting to watch the new shows at release, and not a minute later, and you simply don't need cable.

but because the studios are fighting this movement it's no where near what it could be.

it could be free of "time slots" allowing for anything which is profitable to continue, complete with interactive commercials - allowing you to save a queue of "interested" shows and products for viewing later. it could be uninterruptable commercials (no FF via tivo), but having the ability to search for, say, everything Charlie Sheen has been in, in chronological order, and watch all of them.

and since the cable co's could place ads everywhere, including the browsing menu, across the bottom of the screen, pop-ups like youtube, etc, they could make more $$. the only reason i can think they haven't taken this step is simply control - the big networks would in the same basket as the small guys. but the answer there seems simple to me - make good shows.
