It is kind of a win win. Either people who stand to lose from vulnerabilities buy or people who stand to gain from vulnerabilities will. If the practise is made illegal it will simply drive disclosers underground, which will greatly weaken all sorts of organisations as the proportion of hostile buyers increases immeasurably.

Messing with national governments can be a very dangerous game. If they found out he was planting a backdoor halfway through the project things could go south in a real hurry, and they'd have to be very incompetent not to have some sort of double blind checks in place. Even if he never entered the country he'd have to avoid it and everywhere it has an extradition treaty with (like India) forever. And what gain? Evidence that they are suppressing dissent, persecuting women? We already know that.

There are less risky ways to bring the fight to them.

The press doesn't have any real power. I mean sure, there's the media, but they can't make laws and they only have as much influence as a casual reader is likely to grant them, which outside the UK isn't much. On the other hand governments intimidating and tracking reporters is a much more serious issue since what power the press does have relies entirely upon their ability to act with a free hand. Maybe not always an unbiased hand, but there are good reasons for them not to simply make up lies as a rule. The fourth estate is neccessary.

Your first post strongly implied that you believe every developer on a team should be directly aware of all of the clients' expectations. That's just as unreasonable as expecting everyone to know the whole design, and I get the feeling you know that. Perhaps you intended something else?

I wouldn't view it as being unreasonable at all - not that every dev needs to be clued in to every detail of what everyone else is doing, but that they should have a good idea of what the project is all about and where they fit in that picture. That way developers can build towards the project goal rather than chipping away in a blind cubicle (they might see something the spec writer didn't think of and catch it on the fly), can offer suggestions to help and improve the project, and generally have a heightened sense of purpose, which leads to among other things greater job satisfaction.

No, you appear to have confused customer requirements with project management, breaking a project down into workable parts is just part of the process of developing programs, the requirements should be long settled by the time you reach that point.

There's nothing wrong with raising a family instead of staying current as a developer, it's a perfectly fair choice, just don't then be surprised when the real world will let you no longer be a developer as a result of you opting to do other things than stay current. The world doesn't owe you the job you want to do in the way you want to do it, it's up to you to figure out what the world wants and what you feel you can and are willing to offer it that it needs.

It's perfectly doable to raise a family while staying current on programming languages. It's not as though the underlying principles ever really change, which is why experienced programmers can pick up new languages with consummate ease once they grok the underlying concepts. What you're talking about are idiots who think 'the world' is middle managers who will strip mine your life to get the project done a week earlier. Newsflash, older programmers aren't less capable, just less willing to be fed a shit sandwich than younger programmers.
