  1. NO! on Should DNA be Patentable? · · Score: 2, Insightful

DNA should not be patentable. It would be morally wrong, since the discovery of a gene is exactly that: nothing new and unique has been created, it's just finding something that was there already.

Patents should protect new ideas, not entities that are already present in nature and are waiting to be found.

However, when you can put a piece of DNA to use in any way, the methodology your technique follows should be patentable. A new method for application of a certain DNA sequence is something that can be new and innovative.

Maybe you'd score high in a double blind listening test, but believe me, to most people CD and MP3 sound the same at this bitrate (256k) with a modern encoder.

But then again, *ogg, *mp3, etc are not meant for users like you. For Joe average, who likes to listen to his walkman, these compressed file formats are a blessing. And, more importantly, a PC & Diamond Rio are affordable for Joe (Jane) Average, and B&W Nautilus speakers are not.

Tightening security is just another step in an evolutionary arms race, and eventually the opponent (the terrorist if you wish), will find a way around it. Anyway, do you think terrorists give a damn about restictions based on US law? I wish I could be more optimistic, but I don't think so.

But let's be positive: It's not as useless as warfare nowadays. If this scenarion turns out to be true we would be killing money (read:machines) instead of humans, avoiding direct casualties on either side of the conflict. Less people get killed, which is nice.

However, the resources of both parties are still being depleted, probably indirectly leading to casualties (think famine-stricken populations, collapsed economies, etc).

I'm not a complete pacifist, but I do think war is mostly useless, no matter how the conflict is resolved (man-man machine-man machine-machine).
