  1. Unemployed on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 0

Having been unemployed for a while, any job at this point would be nice. I understand not enjoying your job, but you gotta be happy that you have one. At least I was aware that I was going to lose my job long before it happened, I just couldn't find what I wanted at the time. Now, I'd be happing flipping burgers.

    Peace!!

I really don't think that TV's and computers will or should be combined for the reasons that Com2Kid listed. It has already been attempted in some fashion with WebTV, although that was a pretty lousy attempt. Also, I really don't think that the TV content providers would really be happy having those devices combined into one due to the piracy and advertising issues. It's obvious that they really do not like the idea of the latest episode of Friends(or fill in the blank) being on the internet right after it is aired. They also really do not like Tivo, UltimateTV or the others due to their functionality. The same reason why they fought against VCR's when those first started becoming popular.

Personally, I prefer having my computer and TV separate. If I'm in the mood to watch TV/movie, then I'll watch TV or a DVD. If I feel like surfing/fragging/coding, then I'll sit at my computer and do so. Perhaps there will be room for both types; those who want a combo device and those who want to keep them separate.

Actually, the image quality on the rear projection TV's pretty good. The main requirement is that you have a room large enough to take advantage of it. You also keep your point of view as close to the center of the screen as possible. The modern rear projection TV's have really come a long way since they were first introduced. Though a projection/large screen television will never match a picture tube for quality. The best picture out there is on a 13" television. The larger the picture tube gets, the more the picture quality becomes. A 35" TV will never match a 13" for quality of picture, you just have to get right up on the 13" to take advantage of it. That is where the larger TV's come into play. You can sit comfortably on the couch and not have to strain your eyes to see the Superbowl.:) As to why someone would want one, that falls into why do you want the newest, greatest gadget. Some people like having the largest TV they can fit into their family room. Personal preference. Once when I worked in a small home theater store, we had a lady buy a 60" projection TV that she had installed in the bedroom of her trailer home. When she was lying down on the bed, her toes nearly touch the screen. I never did understand that one... Takes all kinds I guess...

It is Gurney Halleck who goes to live with the smugglers. Idaho dies in that scene, though in the book he died fighting against Imperial Saudakar, of whom he kills 19 before they kill him. I was hoping for so much more from this mini-series, but it has failed to deliver so far. I am a huge fan of the book, and a Frank Herbert fan all around for his other books outside of the Dune series, and IMHO, this version has so far failed to capture the feel and the overall intelligence of the characters. Dr. Yueh was a brilliant man who was forced to betray the family he loved. The MS makes no mention of his role as one of Paul's primary teachers. Thufir Hawat is supposed to be one of the most feared men in the Imperium and the Master of Assassins for House Atredies, not an overdressed buffoon. The MS take on Idaho is passable. And Paul came across as being more of a weenie and a spoiled brat than Luke could have ever dreamed of. He is supposed to be on the verge of being a Mentat and nearly an adept of Bene Gesserit training, not someone who makes 5 year olds look mature and well-behaved. Impulsive, yes; sulky, no. There is no feel for the tension these people feel being made to move to Arrakis or the subtle political intrigues and awareness possessed by all of the major characters; especially the Duke, the Lady Jessica, Thufir, even Paul himself, except there at the end with Stilgar. Their portrayal of Jessica is pretty good. The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohaim is poorly portrayed by the mini-series. There does not seem to be any compassion for what she knows is going to happen to the Duke or for Jessica. They also do not explain what the test is that Paul goes through or why they are performing it, unless they plan to later on, which would be acceptable. The costumes, however, looks like something out of Phantom Menace. I realize that I am a purist when it comes to the Dune series and to Frank Herbert in general, but that is due to the fact that he has given me many hours of enjoyment with his books ( Dune in particular). However, I do plan to watch the second installment tonight to see how they do things. I hope it improves and I haven't given up hope, yet.

A very imfomative response, though I have a small correction regarding the shipping issues. I used to work for UPS and I can't imagine FedEx being that much different. Most UPS trucks and vans return to the hubs fairly full. The OTR trucks are almost never empty and the smaller trucks are not empty very often. Both companies are very efficient when it comes to utilizing the storage space on their vehicles. However, other shipping companies do tend to return to their warehouses fairly empty. UPS and FedEx do not.

I have to disagree with you on several points. As someone who was never fully accepted by the majority of my schoolmates in both junior high and high school, I can honestly say that I did atttempt to mesh with society. It was a futile effort. Most people simply did not understand my interests or my point of view. Some people are just too different from their peers to be readily accepted. That does not necessarily make them insane or egocentric. Also, I am a firm believer that I should not have to pander to someone to be liked. You either accept me the way I am or you don't. Unfortunately, I did not have the wisdom and courage to tell people that. Those days are over ten years past. Since then I have met others who went through the same pain. Life is not a popularity contest and I think that is the statement that the young man was trying to make. I hope that he continues to display the same courage that his actions must have taken. It is much easier to submit to pressure and be like everyone else than it is to stand out from the crowd. Once you break from the crowd, you are truly all alone and that makes you an easier target. Some of the worlds most famous people who helped bring about sweeping societal changes realized that to get society's attention, you have to be a little rude and perhaps overreact to a situation. Perhaps he felt he had to be offensive or no one would have listened to him. I, for one applaud him. Be yourself!

Fluorescent lamps actually "burn" and do so at temperatures that are measured in Kelvins. When fluorescent lamps are lit, this is called fluorescing. The different temperatures(Kelvin) dictate the color of the lamps. The application of an electrical current to the contents causes fluorescence. Also, fluorescent lamps contain some rather nasty chemicals inside. So much so that if you break one, don't breathe the dust from them, it is nice and toxic. What the effects the contents cause when inhaled, I'm not sure.

So, that makes this new discovery fairly neat. Imagine plasma lamps as mood lighting!
