Can one of the editors explain why a high 6 digit Slashdot reader qualifies for the honorific title "long term", but a low 4 digit Slashdot reader does not?
Has darkharlequin done something to displease the editors?
Whenever I sat down at a system and had forgotten to set $EDITOR before doing a checkin, sending mail or other activities that automatically drop you into an editor, I used to use:
Ctrl-Z
killall vi
But then someone taught me that you can go ESC ESC ESC ESC : q! (apparently one ESC is not always enough, so four or five times is recommended). So mostly I still use my old method.
While I do have distant memories of writing my thesis on a Mac Classic's tiny B&W screen, I'd have expected the more modern Macs to support at least 4 bit color monitors by now, but apparently that is not the case. I see you now have a green option, do they also do amber?
Even better is that Emacs gives you a consistent interface whether you are managing systemd, sysvinit or brew. No longer does the Poettering tendency to redefine command-line argument ordering to "improve" on long standing Posix convention need to be an unnecessary burden to the sysadmin.
Question from me is, how did Apple EVER be able to make sales to Iran?
Under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (20 July 2015) the sanctions on Iran were partially lifted. The US has its own sanctions which remained in place, but as a company registered as tax resident in Jersey, I guess Apple thought they could avoid that. But under the current US regime they are having second thoughts.
In this case the understory seems to be America's growing leadership in semiconductors against US companies. The current Broadcom was formed by a merger between Broadcom of California, and Avago, which was formed when two New York based private equity firms bought the semiconductor division of Agilent, which itself was spun out of HP. Being private equity vultures, they moved corporate headquarters to a more tax friendly location, but the operations are still very much based in the US.
Maybe Obama was somehow involved in setting up the deal, that would explain why Trump has to scuttle it now.
We need to codify a right to self-defence in the laws that cover this. The kill switch as a standalone concept might be unethical and likely illegal, but when used in self defence from an attack of this magnitude it is entirely justified.
He can sell closed licenses to his own code, but I'd be very surprised if he had been granted rights to sell closed licenses for the rest of the Linux kernel, and without that the closed licenses to his own code would be worthless.
But why do you think he needs to offer closed licenses for the case to have any merit?
I find it difficult to use these apps, as their interface is too similar to Siri and Alexa, but they act all buggy when I get confused and mix up the names.
It seems to me a significant portion of the video game industry is based in Japan, where guns kill between 10 and 20 people each year. Meanwhile in America, 500+ are killed by guns accidentally going off, 10000+ murdered with guns and 40000+ kill themselves with guns every year. Must be the video games they said. We need to do something about the video games to save our children.
Did anyone else see the news about the elephant in the classroom last week? It doesn't seem to have gotten the attention it deserves.
They already know noone is buying into the 3D and curved screen marketing, that's why they're aiming for the new non-existent market of people who want a framed wall on their wall.
I drove a manual for 10+ years and used to think like you, but back then that thinking was mostly true. Have you driven a modern automatic? A lot of improvements came in through the 1990's and early 2000's, mostly driven by the drive to lower fuel consumption. This has led to automatic transmissions without "a lot of slip", and with more gears (6 or 7 is now common, as are CVTs), so there is an in-between gear that is just right for that incline.
The thing that grammar and typography nazis always overlook is that the definition of what is correct with respect to English language usage is constantly evolving. I think typewriters and computers have been around for long enough by now that a non directional sans-serif apostrophe is considered by 99% of English language readers to be correct.
Prime is a Unicode character anyway (U+2032 which will not display on slashdot), the ASCII character 0x27 is officially called APOSTROPHE in Unicode, and the usual representation is as what is known as a TYPEWRITER APOSTROPHE. Unicode now recommends to use RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK as an apostrophe, but I gave up listening to their advice when they started adding emoji to Unicode after around a decade of refusing to add the widely used IEC Power Symbol (which they finally added in Unicode 9.0, emoji having been added in Unicode 6.0).
The proper character for an apostrophe is the ASCII U+0027 APOSTROPHE, not U+02BC MODIFIER LETTER APOSTROPHE, U+0315 COMBINING COMMA ABOVE RIGHT, U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK or whatever it is that Apple has redefined it to in OSX.
It's not that it's bad, it's that Oracle owns the name, but they don't want to maintain the product. So they farm out the costly maintenance to the community, but keep their precious name that they paid $5.6 billion for.

Emacs can also be used without a Ctrl key: M-x (aka ESC x) is the only command you need.

Guns don't cause violence, but they sure as hell amplify it.
And before you claim the motivation is nationalist not racist, you should probably check the nationality of the person involved first.

Is this seriously about the race of the CEO? The US has sunk that far already?

Maybe the companies should have thought about that before trying to game the rules against the interests of the people who make the rules.
That's 300-400 fewer American jobs that will be lost when the rest of the world puts a tariff on US made jeans.

That's a prime character you've used
If you're going to be a pedant on the internet, best do your homework first.
