Latest count is NINETY-ONE dead. The bomb only got 7; at least 84 were shot dead at the youth camp. And it was a Norwegian right winger who did it. He dressed himself as a cop. He's in custody now. Norwegians, unlike Americans, are a civilized nation. He will not be put to death. Indeed, he may not even spend his whole life in prison.
In New Paltz, New York, there is a street with houses that have been *continuously* in use since they were built in the 1600's. And some European neighborhoods can beat that by centuries. So yeah, radically new housing designs don't seem to rank high on our species's "to do" list.
Bingo! You constantly read about needing to "colonize other planets" to ensure human survival if/when something Very Bad happens to the Earth. What nobody seems to understand is exactly how difficult that would be. There is a remote chance we could partially terraform Mars or a couple of the gas giants' moons within a couple of centuries. But actual interstellar travel, with enough of a payload to support a colony, is so far beyond our current capabilities (yes, even using Project Orion) that there is close to 0% possibility of doing it before the next climate change/asteroid collision/gamma ray burst wipes us out.
So you have no problem allowing people who have *never* driven before to get behind the wheel of a car and drive around the streets where you live? Nice combo. Natural selection + unintended consequences = impressive death rate.
Guilt and innocence don't enter into it. The guy was never threatened with arrest, just revocation of his driver license. That doesn't even count as a civil penalty. Now if he kept on driving, got pulled over, and was issued a ticket for unlicensed driving, THEN we start getting into issues of guilt and innocence.
Ironic that you should mention "sea change." Recent data is making the most pessimistic climate change scenarios look more and more likely. Just a few years ago, the consensus "best guesstimate" of sea level rise was a few inches by the end of the century. The latest data and modeling has changed that to ONE METER. It is becoming more and more likely that our technological civilization will face a severe threat to its continued existence within our children's lifetimes, if not within ours.
Apparently you don't read much of the tech press beyond/. *Everybody* is predicting RIM's demise. Why? Plummeting profits, delays in rolling out new products, the PlayBook fiasco (no email client, no apps), management that practically defines "clueless," blah blah blah. Some think RIM can stagger along as a niche player, others think it will be bought at a bargain-basement price by one of the tech giants. Almost nobody thinks it will return to where it was 5 or 6 years ago.
It looks just like it did when I first went on line in 1996, and I understand it was much the same all the way back to its birth. Of course there have been some changes. Back in '96, seemed like half the return addresses were @anon.penet. fi.
If you think it *isn't*, you clearly need to take your own advice. Here's a hint - most "libertarians" are conservatives, no matter what they say publicly. When I was a little kid, I broke more than one mercury thermometer, and played with the neat silver stuff. My parents didn't freak out, but they did discourage me from continuing.
If you are going to make patently stupid comments like calling nuclear power "environmentally friendly," then for the sake of whatever reputation you have left, you should indeed shut up. For all the babble I hear about the "brilliant" Ron Paul, it sure seems like Libertarianism is the least intellectually consistent political philosophy ever invented.
It's almost like, they didn't really care about anything but getting a bunch of carriers locked into their platform, and abandoning their own (or other) efforts...
Bingo! "Google" and "abandoned effort" are becoming damn near synonymous.
Your linked article does NOT state that Exxon funded any of those organizations. It does state that BP contributed to them, as part of an initiative to "green" the company. It goes on to make a big fuss over the salaries of executives at environmental organizations, and various government funding of same. But the dollar amounts are insignificant compared to the amounts spent by ExxonMobil on various climate change deniers. On the while, the linked article is merely a feeble attempt to smear conservation organizations. Classic propaganda.
Um, no. When you have to slash your own *already* lowered profit estimates after just a few weeks, it means your entire enterprise is going South at a rapid pace. RIM's management has been described as "arrogant," "tone-deaf" and "clueless." They keep pushing back product release dates, while having nothing currently on the market that is drawing in customers. If there isn't a major shake-up at the upcoming shareholders meeting, I can see RIM suffering a total collapse of its stock price, leaving it with no viable option but hoping for a buy-out. Think it can't happen? Just look at Nortel!
Nice theory. Too bad it is not supported by any facts. Apple's upgrades have historically *improved* performance of older (supported) models. There have been exceptions, but they were rare, and much commented upon by Mac users.
Exploitation of natural resources without thought of sustainability has been standard human practice since at least the Old Stone Age. Oh, and it was Boomers who first started the "green" movement.
That would be news to my friends in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa.
The local weather folk here in upstate New York were talking about a nasty system with all kinds of dread implications for the South for literally days before the tornadoes. They love to show jet stream patterns and talk about how sucky the weather is in other parts of the country. Don't blame NOAA for the lack of advance notice, blame your local "news" broadcasters.
Oh puhleeeze! "Some guy in a mask told me to do it!" is not going to fly as a defense. And how many of those "anarchists" were there, really? Were many, or any, visible in videos or photos? This past St. Patrick's Day, students at a local institution of theoretically higher education held an event called "Kegs & Eggs." As you might guess, it involved drinking steadily from the time they woke up. Shortly after the city's official St. Paddy's parade went past their neighborhood, the "Kegs & Eggs" crew went ape-shit and started overturning cars, tossing furniture including a full-sized refrigerator out of second-story windows, and other destructive pastimes. Naturally, they also recorded themselves on a variety of mobile devices, and posted their handiwork to Facebook, YouTube, and the universe. Greatly aided by perusing the social sites, local police made dozens of arrests. No anarchists, agents provocateurs, or bandanna fetishists were involved. Just a combination of alcohol and human stupidity.

That's why I keep having Flash cookies show up in Safari Cookies, obviously.
Capitalists are such lying byatches.

I'm proud to say I have no idea what Angry Birds is. And no, I'm not going to google it either...
I call Bullshit. You wouldn't have bothered to make the comment if you didn't know exactly what an overtired meme AB has become.
It looks just like it did when I first went on line in 1996, and I understand it was much the same all the way back to its birth.

your wife may burn a different number of calories than you since one partner may be doing more work than the other depending on sexual position.
As a big fan of Reverse Cowgirl, I know where you are coming from, brother!
Congratulations, you have just revealed the true depth of your ignorance of all things Apple.
*Plastic* crap? Really?
Locating a specific song in my 64 GB library takes me a couple of seconds. Typing the first few letters of the song title brings me right to it.
Duh.

"Yellowbeard" is definitely a neglected masterpiece!
"Is that strictly true, sir?"
"That, my boy, is what we in the Royal Navy call... a Lie."
Um, no.

Utter nonsense.
I suggest you learn a little bit about how the world really works.

My IDS is still showing probes from the Blaster Worm, that was 2003.
Not bad, but I'm waiting for somebody to chime in that they just got the "I love you!" email.
