The combined works of GPL'ed code plus code under this new X license has the further restriction of not being able to distribute it without those advertisements. So linking GPL code to XFree86 4.4 means you are breaking the GPL.

Of course, you could set up your own alternate .com or .net TLD. Good luck in getting the full and updated list of all registered .com and .net domains and their nameservers :)

Not taking into account any power losses in conversions etc., this means that for 72 hours UPS you'll need 72*300/12=1800 Ah worth of batteries. I don't know what the latest research in batteries have brought us, but I don't think you can fit a total of 1800Ah in batteries in 3u rackspace (and still have room for the 14 disks).

You guy's are really considerate: fire destroys network, they do all their best to get it somewhat back to work and then you slashdot it back into oblivion.

Don't worry about that. The temporary www.utwente.nl website is hosted at a temporary site just across the street (but it sits at the same subnet as some of our own servers, never had a /. effect that nearby....)

Though the arsonist takes a huge part of the blame, i think the university also made some faults. Why put your servers in a building that burns that well? If you have so much expensive equipment, you should consider everything, including arson! A few days ago they were happy that no asbestos was released because it was removed shortly ago. But isn't asbestos a fire retarder??

I think it's partly because of historical reasons. The building was built in 1974 and even back then it was already called the TW/RC building because it came with a computer room.

I believe the University is assured against fire, but I'm afraid that these researchers who lost years of their research in the flames have no other option that to do it all again :(

  16. Re:OK on University of Twente NOC Destroyed · · Score: 1

The building in question is the TW/RC building (Technische Wiskunde / Rekencentrum = Technical Mathematics / Datacentre) which is a 3 floor high building consisting of 4 wings (A, B, C and D) and partially built on water. A Google Image search on 'tw utwente' will show some pictures from the outside of the building.
The building is almost 30 years old and the two destroyed wings have just been renovated a year or so ago. Because of this renovation the 2 wings are believed to pass current fire code (the other wings don't).
The hallways are a bit narrow and are laid out in what can be described as a maze, so I'm not surprised that a large enough fire managed to spread through the entire building.
I'm almost sure A108 is one in a series of 'normal' classrooms with only chairs and tables and a blackboard, so I'm a bit puzzled why the fire would have started there.
