I would wager most people on this site know more about copyright than the average congress critter.

It has some of the longest commutes in the Northwest and they still have not even begun talking about building light rail for it. They have a huge bicycling culture that is forced to use unsafe shoulders most of the time because bike lanes only cover 10-20% of the city, so an increased rate of accidents and a lot of yelling. The only reason Comcast gets my money is because they were granted a monopoly for Cable in my area. IMHO, we really need to start talking about taking away cable and in some places fiber monopolies.

On another note it would be way cool to be able to have whichever company's box has the broadcast channels on it that you associate with your home town, in my case New York and San Francisco. Do particular broadcast company stations have monopolies as well for geographic areas? I'm pretty damn sick of monopolies, we need to go antitrust hopefully with this administration before its too late.

Deaths in custody after the introduction of the taser in both countries rose as deaths related to overdose, homicide by police officer, cardiac-arrest and many others increased substantially. The taser is over-used and mis-used and police are killing people because of it. Don't be an apologist for murderers, it makes you look like a monster.

  21. Why are you here? on Why Should I Trust My Network Administrator? · · Score: 1

To the OP, if you outsource any part of your company, including cleaning services you are putting your company in the hands of outsiders. After in-house theft from employees the source of theft is almost always going to be the contractors, cleaning staff, or even delivery guys. We had a pizza guy steal a blackberry with 3 blinking security cameras pointed at him. He was a convicted felon but we did not know that because we did not hire him and yet he still with access to our site for a few minutes, we almost lost a Blackberry. If your IP is that important to not trust outsiders than don't. IT will always have the keys to the kingdom and if they are not on your side they can clean you out in minutes. Think encryption or passwords will help you? They will just install keyboard loggers or do man in the middle attacks (when applicable) using your own network.

BTW, what kind of startup can't afford IT or do it themselves? It does not take a rocket scientist anymore to handle a few servers, some switches/routers/firewalls and a dozen or so workstations. Anything beyond that and yeah it makes sense to go with an in-house IT person but seriously what kind of company has no one that can do this and is posting on Slashdot? If you can't manage to setup and run an OpenBSD box for a firewall, an Apache boxen for slinging HTTP, a cheapo 300-400 dollar gigabit router and less than a dozen workstations than this is really not the site for you and you pry don't have what it takes to run a startup. Startups are hard work and require people to be jacks of all trades till they can hire on specialists. Why not try Business Week or some place that can help you with your problems because I just don't see them.

I have a dedicated HDMI out Mythbuntu computer I built for about 250 bucks that does the heavy lifting for me and a samsung/netflix blu-ray box that takes care of the rest. I tried some of the features on the TV itself but it was pretty limited like just news updates and weather. I've never owned a Samsung TV or Monitor before this but this TV convinced me to spend the extra few bucks on it and I'm pretty happy with it. Its menu system is far more intuitive than the Sony's and does not hide as many advanced features. To use some LCDs features you need to hack into them and I'm reluctant to do that to a $1000+ piece of proprietary hardware. You should really consider a cheap computer because it will do everything these 'internet-enabled' TVs do and more.

Yeah power caps are the #1 failure on any LCD. If this is a big investment for you try to put a housefan or something on it when you are just watching TV and you can turn it off for movies.
