I'm willing to sacrafice one minute of my time while the blue-haired lady looks my name up on a clipboard. I do agree with you that they can use that number to find out how you voted, that should be changed. However, I think the reason for it is that they know they hand-out 1000 ballots and that the machine or whatever registers 1000 ballots at the end of the day.

Any form of Government ID that holds information is a bad idea. It would start out just being used to verify your voting ID, but the next thing you know you'll need it to open a bank account or get a credit card (ie Social Security).

We've been doing this democracy thing for a while, you'd think we'd have it figured out.

Depends who you mean by "we". The powers-that-be (corporate interests, lifetime policitians, ie the people whose financial futures rest on the results of elections) have it figured out. If you mean "we" as in "we the people", well then I have bad new for you, "we" don't matter anymore. The elections aren't about choosing our leaders, they're about maintaining the status quo while screwing over the least amount of people (which is still a lot!).

I'm not a Republican or Democrat, so I really don't care who wins what election, nothing's going to change for the better. When was the last time government really did something good for you?

The point is that people (at least me) assign different values to things.

Yes, cultural relativism. Just because two different people, or two different cultures have different value systems, doesn't make one necessarily correct.

For example, in America, rape is not acceptable. For many reasons, including the fact that it hurts and victim and violates his or her rights to choose a sexual partner.

In some parts of the world, rape is seen as a right of passage for a woman, and is culturally acceptable. But does that make it right?

The answer is no, because someone is still getting hurt and rights are still being violated. I realize this is an extreme example, but it's an easy one to explain.

Just because you've justified what you're doing, doesn't necessarily make it right.
